IS there any way I can get 500 without having to buy the full 800 msp

Have you joined some of Microsoft's loyalty programs?
1) Bing.com
It costs 500 Bing credits to buy 400 XBL points as a reward, but you usually get 250 credits just for signing up, then usually 10 credits a day for using their search engine 50 times (1 credit/5 searches) and sometimes a bonus 12 credits for just clicking on certain search criteria.
For this, all that's required of you is to sign up, and install the Bing toolbar in IE (maybe FF)
2) Xbox Live Rewards program (http://rewards.xbox.com/)
Not sure if you have to be a gold member, but you earn 20 points a month just answering a 5 question survey and you're given XXX amount of points for adding to your gold subscription time, referring a friend to sign up for XBL gold, watching a Netflix movie, buying certain stuff off the Marketplace, etc.
It'll take about a month, but you can get the 500 MSP by playing Bing's game for about a month (250 credits to join, then earning at least 10 credits a day, maybe more with bonuses to earn the other 250 credits to redeem for 400 MSP) and then join up on the XBL Rewards program and earning the other 100 MSP through various offers.
400 MSP (~1 month on Bing) + 100 MSP (Xbox rewards) = free 500 MSP
