Need a UMD burner before PSP is worth the buy

Daddy

CAGiversary!
They limit the memory by allowing a 1gig or if you can find a 2 gig duo pro card, without this you cant even fit a movie on this thing...at 250 w/o a memory stick and 40 bucks a game this thing is a ripoff at this point, even if you do put a video image to your 1gig or 2 gig card your only fittin a movie or 2 at best....for 400+ this thing isnt worth it till a UMD burner comes out so you can burn as many movies as you want instead of paying 30 bucks a flick....by the time a UMD burner does come out they will have a web browser fully funtional (as its all ready hidden in wipeout pure) but right now I would suggest holdin off the original WOW of this launch

I'm not exactly sure what your complaints are here.

I can fit two hour long TV shows on my 512 memory stick, with room for a dozen MP3s and some photos. If I had a 1 Gig card, I would certainly have no trouble getting a full length movie on it.

I guess a UMD burner would be handy, but I don't really see anything (other than full games) that I'd really want it for.

a full length movie takes about 350-400 MB. Also, the UMD movies aren't $30 a pop, they are about $15 and Target has them all on sale for $12.99 this week. I wouldn't hold your breath for a UMD burner. If that's what you're waiting for to buy this thing, you'll be waiting for a long time.
Where would you get blank media?
Thats my point not out yet...but if you can compress how small and what format?
i compressed a 128 mg ep of samurai champloo down to 48 megs. ive heard other people on this board compress even smaller than that/
Okay using what format and program??? And do you lose and quality?

I dunno, UMDs vary in price. Just came from Best Buy. I think XXX was 15. House of Flying Daggers was 30. Most of the others were 20-25.

I sure can't wait to buy a movie to watch on a teeny tiny screen for a higher price than for a widescreen version.

Hooray!

I heard no one outside of Sony has UMD writers. The publishers have to put it on a DVD and send it to them.

Edit: I meant developers, not publishers.

Yeah sont is tryin monopolize ...rememer the MINI DISC..that bombed..i guess they think they have a chance since its a PSP thing now...

Md bombed in this country, yes. It did not bomb in Japan.

I've got 5 episodes of anime, 1.5 volumes of manga, a music cd and all of my game saves on a 512mb card with space left over. I'd say thats plenty.

Sure, I'd like a UMD burner just as much as the next guy, but if the format didn't catch on it certainly wouldn't catch on because a burner was available. The primary reason MD "flopped" in this country was the simple fact that the initial MD devices were record/play only. Thus if you wanted to put a music cd on a MD, you had to play it through the audio line-in to the device itself and record it that way. By the time Sony released NetMD(which allowed the conversion of mp3 and other formats for burning on MD), mp3 compatible cd players and mp3 players were available and these offered far more space for the money and were easier to use if you were willing to pay the premium price to get your foot in the door. I bought a NetMD player that I still use, because I don't have even 5 gb of music, so a $300 ipod is a waste of money for my purposes.

Now, back to UMD.. I don't think that this will ever become as big as Dvd, not only because it is a proprietary format, but because they are more expensive and do not hold as much data as a dvd.

They're not forcing anyone to buy UMD movies, memory sticks have always been pricey.. if people think it is too much to pay, they won't buy it.. but so far, they are buying it.

Sony will change if they have to, based on what their sales tell them and I don't think that a UMD burner would help their cause in the least. If anything, it will help prevent game and umd movie piracy at least for a while.

Edit: and as for directions, Psp Video 9 is pretty simple, I haven't tried to use 3GP yet myself. Psp Video 9 allows you to use some presets based on what kind of material it is (anime 0-2 hours, movie, etc.).

I haven't put any live action stuff on here yet, so I've been using the anime 0-2 hours setting with low quality sound (sounds pretty good still, unless you're a serious audiophile) and my 180-200mb divx files compress to around 72-85 mb and are very watchable.

I hope this helps you out somewhat. :)

Also, psp video 9 lets you copy it to the Psp and it makes the necessary directories on the memory stick for you. Transfer is easy, just stick the psp in usb connection mode and start up psp video 9 and it should find it on its own. (In windows it will create a removable disk also, so you can copy photos and music files directly without any software other than windows explorer)

Edit: one other gripe I just found.. you can't use sony's sonicstage software with your psp + memory stick unless you have a sony brand memory stick. I have a 512mb sandisk and it told me to go fuck myself.. /joy

Do you even know the definition of monopoly?

While it would be nice to have writable UMDs at some point, I don't see it happening.

Still lookin for a compression issue with description.....unless That 9 series does for you...and you said some sound quality dies..that sucks...

Glad someone else here has some common sense.

Blank UMDs and UMD writers? Ain't gonna happen buddy. And I mean ever. So you can stop whining about how you want one now.

If the PSP doesn't justify its cost solely as a game player, chances are it won't win you over as a movie player either at greater cost for the needed Memory Stick capacity. Sony is not going to allow unauthorized creation of UMDs for as long as possible. If UMD movies can be produced by consumers there is little to stop them doing the same with games. It might come as a shock but the entire reason for the PSP's existence is to create a market for stuff that produces profits for Sony.
