Need advice on some older/rare psx games

Hello everyone.
My name is Kenny (aka darkrpger on the boards).
I was lucky enough to recently stumble upon your site.

I've been buying & playing games for my own pleasure since the Atari (before the 2600) with "Breakout" on it was around.
I've recently (in the last couple of weeks) decided to give buying, selling, trading, and 'investment' gaming a try.

Just today, I came across a veritable gold-mine of a store. I say this because he has 100's of still factory-sealed psx games...some rare, some not so rare...and some...that I really just don't know about.

My question is this:
I can buy Darkstalkers: Night Warriors & JoJo's Bizarre Adventure for $45/each.
I haven't had much luck finding out what prices they've sold for in the past. They're both in the "factory-sealed" category.

Also, I just brought home Medievil (2), King's Field, and Tomba (also all factory-sealed) for $90...

I would appreciate any & all thoughts, suggestions, comments, tips, recommendations, advice, and opinions on these 2 deals.

Thanks in advance for your time & help :applause:

Jump on all of those.

Also, can you find out if he has Monster Rancher 3 and Monster Rancher 4 (both PS2 games) factory sealed?

Buy them and put them up on eBay, please.

Wait, first find out how much they are.

Thanks.

I called him & have him holding Darkstalkers & Jojo's for me until Tuesday - the next day that he's open.

Between now & then, I'm going to see if I can put together some kind of list of the rarest/most valuable psx games so I can look for them while I'm there.

Like I said - he has 100's of psx games still sealed (and 100's of used ones, too)

My worries are:

A). Passing up a great deal because I don't know how rare it is or what it's worth, and

B). Buying something that I think is worth a lot...but isn't.

I'm pretty good with the rareness & values of most psx rpg's - but - when it comes to the other genres, I'm pretty much clueless.

If anyone can list anything else that I should jump on if he has it, I'd appreciate it.

I'll be glad to look for anything listed here on Tuesday when I go back to the store and report back here as to what he has in stock.

From the games that I was looking at today, he's charging anywhere from $20 - $60 for each of his new/sealed games.
Knowing that many games can cost this much used, I'd *really* like to do the best that I can here while I can do it.

I don't expect to come across any other stores that still have a large selection of new psx games...this is a first for me.

I'll look for those Monster Rancher games.
I did see a game called "Monster Seed"...that's not one of them, is it?

Thanks-

If you don't manage to see them there, my last resort would have to be calling Tecmo up and seeing if they have any remaining copies from their own warehouse that they are willing to sell. Tecmo is good like that.

@ nintendonly

I called him and he doesn't have Monster Rancher #3 or #4.
He has a (used) Monster Rancher EVO that he's asking $30 for. I don't think that's anything special, is it?

Out of curiosity, I took a quick look on Amazon for you and they have:

Monster Rancher #3
-starting at $11.94 (used) and
-starting at $69.98 (new)

and Monster Rancher #4
-starting at $22.95 (used) and
-starting at $149.99 (new)

Did you already know about these?

I would just watch out that they aren't reseals. Honestly that many rare games - I would assume they are. I have seen plenty of bozos shrink wrapping up the games and trying to sell. Some times you'll open up your tomba 2 and find a madden

I am assuming you are keeping these sealed and are going to resell them. If he has a store with all these games I'd think he would know the value of those games. Especially brand new.

anyways proceed with caution.

Yeah, as I was reading the thread I was thinking "these are probably resealed games". Can't really know without opening them, but, it sounds like you're just after a profit (and not actually after the games).

Thanks for the tip.

They all appear (to my inexperienced eye) to be originally sealed & they all still have that white sticker going across the top of the game w/ the name of the game & slus code, etc...does this mean anything?

What I do know is that he's been in the same shop in this same location for 10 years.
Also, I asked him how he came to have so many new/sealed copies of so many older games in his store.

His answer was that when he 1st opened his original shop, he had to order minimum amounts of certain games to get the manufacturer/supplier to do business.
According to him, this is all of the unsold games from that stock.

Other than checking the seam and checking that white sticker/label on the top of the game...is there anything else that I should be checking and/or looking for?

Thanks-

Right there is a red flag though, as you mention checking the seam, when in fact MANY PS1 games were Y fold seals. I believe that most games were Y fold and only the ones from smaller publishers and/or later in the PS1's life cycle were seam sealed.

Seam sealed ones are usually done with a heat gun and a lighter shrinkwrapping material than the Y fold ones.

Moreover, later in the PS1's life cycle they stopped using those white stickers on the top of the cases with the game name/SLUS/etc on them.

While they don't mention PS1 games in this video, here's a small video from YouTube to give you an idea of what to look for for other classic games as far as seals go.

Thank you all for the replies.

It turns out that (when I brought the copy of Tomba! back for a refund), the owner's partner admitted that it was a display model...and that it had indeed been resealed. He also mentioned his partner's greed in trying to sell it off as new.
At any rate, I got my money back and I learned a lesson in the process!
The games that I found later in the week, more than made up for my one bad experience :)

Thanks, again.

How much did they want for Tomba though? I ask because I've been trying to find a reasonably priced used copy for a long time now, but I'm always a day late and a dollar short.

Well, I bought 2 other games when I got it and it worked out to $32.00 for each of the 3 games.
As far as used goes, I guess his copy would be about as good as it gets for used.
Buying it by itself (w/o buying any other games)...I'm sure it could be bought for ~ $40.
If that's good and/or you're interested - either talk to me here or e-mail me at [email protected]
...and I'll get you in touch with the store (phone #, address, directions, whatever).

Ouch. No thanks. That's damn near retail for the game. I wanna play it but once I'm done with it I wanna have some room left over to make some money on it. Paying $40 for a PS1 game=/= a deal to me.

You might wanna look into the Video Game Price Charts website to see what these games are going for on average on Amazon/eBay/Half.com before buying them at the inflated prices anymore.

That guy is a ripoff. Brand new copies of EVO can be had for $19.99 on Amazon or hell, at my nearest Kmart.

Oh, and used copies of Monster Rancher games are NEVER worth it.
