If you don't care about the aesthetics, you could go with the original top-loader NES. That's where my money is at. They came out as the last gasp of NES manufacturing, maybe that has something to do with the legend that they work near-flawlessly (which is my experience with owning a top-loader as well), just be aware that they go for a lot more money than the standard ones. I'm probably wasting my energies here since it sounds like you're hellbent on the original model, but I thought you'd be interested in another tip.
I really do want a top loader, I just don't want to spend $70-80 on just the top loader console, a controller and the wires. I figure to just go with the cheaper alternative (the original NES) for now and eventually work my way up to getting a top loader. Thanks for the input though.
