CAGiversary!
i went down to my local frys electronics to browse at some laptops. now i know nothing about laptops and their components, so i dont know much about what to look for. my budge is around 500 +/- what i saw had some refurbished ones and some regular ones.

im not really worried to much about battery life as im sure to end up having it plugged into a socket all the time as the only place ill be using it is in my bedroom since i dont travel much.

unless you know of better laptops at the 500 dollar range and they are B&M available, please mention, im all ears.

Dont get an Acer. Their prices are cheap because their stuff is cheaply made. The first and only Acer machine I bought the CPU fan started going out within 3 months of normal use.

I would suggest an ASUS. Ever ASUS laptop I've owned has been really good and you get a lot for what you pay for. I plan to buy another Asus gaming laptop in early 2011, and the Asus tablet in Q1/2 2011.

I would typically only go for a 17" laptop if you had a bigger budget. I think it's a waste to buy them if they're not going to essentially be desktop replacements with the best specs you can get. Additionally, the screen will be eating battery time due to it's size.

I recommend Lenovo and Toshiba. I bought the G555 for my cousin when they were clearing them out at fry's for $250 (ended up $300 after taxes and recycle fees). I also own a 17" Toshiba (a couple years old - was given as a graduation present). I like the build quality and aesthetic choices of both companies. Also, Toshiba's built-in speakers are quite loud. I always get complements on that.

Anyway, check SD often. They always have laptop deals floating around. I would post a deal put I can't find the necessary coupons atm. Maybe try Office Depot as well since they price match staples and take competitor coupons. You could possibly net yourself a G550 for $400 (at OD) with the $75 off staples coupon that I can't find...

I bought an acer laptop in 2008 and it still runs fine;I'd recommend it personally.
