I need PSX RPG recommendations so I know what to hunt for.
I like 2D and/or strategy games. I'm not against 3D, just prefer 2D that's all.

I have the following:

Chrono Cross
FF Origins
FF Anthology
FF Chronicles
FF Tactics
FF VII
Hoshigami
Koudelka
Legend of Dragoon
Persona
Persona 2
Saiyuki
Suikoden
Tactics Ogre
Thousand Arms

I know about:

Front Mission 3
Suikoden II
Valkyrie Profile
Star Ocean
Tales of Destiny
Legend of Mana
Tales of Destiny

In case you were wondering, I skipped a generation of consoles. I stopped playing games after the SNES and continued on with the PS2, so I missed PSX altogether and I'm trying to make up for it.

Anyway, any recommendations will be appreciated and if you can, describe the battle system a little.

Thanks in advance. :D

Try SaGa Frontier. There's something about it; perhaps it's because it's so unique in the sense that you have seven characters from which to choose and each has their own storyline (some intertwine, some are longer than others). Also, the battle/experience system is unlike anything that I have played.

Attacks and magic are learned during and after battle.

With Humans, simply attacking with your hands will develop physical attacks (attacks using body) such as Triangle Kick, Giant Spin, Pile Driver, etc. Using swords will gain Sword skills (Double Attack, Heaven Hell); using guns will develop gun attacks (Trick Shot) and hundreds more.

Monsters absorb their enemies, which then retain their skills/attacks/stats. The harder the enemy, the better the stats.

For Mystics, they have their own set of Mystic attacks (Mystic Sword, Mystic Magic), which can also absorb enemies.

For Machines/Mechs, they take the data from other machine-type enemies, and gain new abilities and attacks. You can equip your machine with all kinds of weapons and items.

You can even unleash combo attacks (5 characters per party) that simply devastate your enemies, and look spectacular.

Speaking of parties, a major part of the game is forming the right parties for the right battles. Having a team of all humans is possible, but it's more fun with a couple of Machines and Monsters, too. The possibilities are endless.

I apologize for the poor descriptions, and I don't do the game justice. I highly recommend this game, though, if you want a unique and fun (most important factor) RPG. With multiple storylines, multiple endings, and tons of sidequests, you can easily log hundreds of hours into this game alone. Must buy, if you ask me.

Another game that I recommend is Legend of Legaia. Great game. You can check out the sequal on the PS2 (Legend of Legaia 2).

How about Breath of Fire III and IV, or Grandia? I really enjoyed Wild Arms, and there's also Wild Arms 2. Vandal Hearts and Vandal Hearts 2 were decent strategy games, as well as the Arc the Lad pack. Xenogears and Vagrant Story were excellent, and were rereleased as greatest hits packages if you don't care about the green stripe. Alundra was a zelda style action rpg, but some of the puzzles were kind of hard, and there was also Alundra 2. Rhapsody was a quircky musical rpg from the same people that did Disgea. Legend of Legaia is also out there, but I never played it.

all the game you "know" about are really good.

ill also throw in Alundra [pt 1], ogre battle, tactics ogre, lunar [silver star=blue] arc the lad collection, xenogears, tales of destiny 2

all really really good games.

Thanks guys, your opinions are greatly appreciated. As for those who read the thread and didn't reply. DIE! j/k :D

Props to Simon Adebesi, who also helped with the DC game recommendations the last time around.

I definitely recommend giving Xenogears a try. My last, and most regretted, trade. A tear comes to my eye every time I think about it.

Uh, nope. They sure didn't.

I have been debating picking up a PSOne for a long time now...but I also really want Steel Battalion....damn.

I TOTALLY agree with you. the saga frontier series is way underrated. its really a fcking great game( my freind jenna sent me it as a birthday present a couple of days ago(LATE birthday present) along with Chrono Cross and FF:T(she didnt want her copy and mine was fucked)). i couldnt believe how good it was after reading and hearing from people that it sucked!

i liked saga frontier 2 ALOT better than 1. vagrant story is mad good. vandal hearts 2 is mad good as well. vanguard bandits was okay as well, but try even finding it. star ocean is MAAAAD good.

rpg's are good for the soul.

Brave Fencer Musashi - If you havent played it get it now. it's more of an action zelda style RPG, but still damn good, defenetely on my top 10 games of all time.

Try Xenogears for an interesting story and Grandia for a good battle system. Try Dragon Warrior 7 for mind-numbing boredom.

Xenogears gets my highest possible recommendation if you want a good story. DWVII is enjoyable as long as
  • a. you like Dragon Warrior games
    b. you have your computer or a good book nearby so you can occupy your mind while doing all the leveling up you'll have to do
There's like hundreds of skills you can learn which I thought was a lot of fun, the story isn't that good but there's plenty of stuff to keep busy with in that game.

Nobody's mentioned is Torneko: The Last Hope or Chocobo's Dungeon 2. Both are kind of like the Rogue games on the PC. The same goes for the Quest mode in Ehrgeiz. Other games in the FFT/Tactics Ogre vein of strategy RPGs are Brigandine and Kartia, but I don't know much more about them. The Monster Rancher series has *some* RPG elements to it, but it's more like a breeding sim.

I can't believe I forgot about Kartia. I played that forever when I got it. It's turn based strategy and everything is fueled by a pretty cool magic system. You find cards with runes on them and then combine them in different ways to make monster-soldiers, weapons for characters and monsters, items, and combat spells. Lots and lots of customization.
