Ok here's the deal. I'm heading to law school soon. Living on loans and what not. My PC is beginning to wear down.

I currently have

AMD Athlon 64
2 Gig low latency ram (PC 3200)
6800 128mb vid card (which is dying out)
160 GB HD
Sould Blaster Auidgy soundcard
DVD burner
500 watt PSU

Here is my issue. THe video card is getting extremely hot. The fan and heatsink are dying out. I would just replace the fan but I fear that it may have caused overall damage to it. So now I want to buy a new one. I am running on AGP stuff.

ALSO I need a laser printer preferablly a All-in-one.

AND I need to spend over 500 via newegg so I can hold over payment till my next student loan disbursement so I can pay it off. So I want to be over 500 but trying to go over board.

Ok....here are my options. I can

1) Get a new motherboard (PCI express) quality vid card (7900 or 7800) get a new chip (my athlon was socket 764 not 939). Though there is not laser printer in there.

or

2) Get a quality video card (AGP) and the MFC laser machine I need.

I'll need to PC for the next 3 years. This is my final upgrade till then so I'm not sure AGP will be able to push it. OR should it be just fine for the games I'll be playing and I can wait till I graduate and settle down to get the monster I want.

See my dilema? Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm going to sell some of the part that work in my PC (The motherboard and Chipset) to go towards it. Plus I'm selling my PSP and ton of stuff to pay for other things that might spill over to this.

That wont work; CPU is socket AM2 and motherboard is socket 939.

I would suggest waiting till around July 24th to make your order. That is when AMD will cut its CPU prices. With the saving you'll get on the CPU (or perhaps just a better CPU for the same price :) ), you can get a motherboard that will support the CPU, and the 7900 GT KO, and your all in one laser printer.

IMO, AGP cards are not worth it... what was the last card AGP got, the X1600XT I think? AGP gets crap and pays too much for it.

I'm assuming you have DDR400 memory? If yes, get a 939 mobo and a 3500+ and wait before buying a new GPU. With DX10 coming, DX9 cards will be cleared out. As SOSTrooper said, AMD will cut prices on AM2 chips on the 24th (which will probably drop the older ones as well).

But if you need a printer, then get that first. Laser printers are still kinda expensive and I'd honestly avoid one unless I needed it. Law school does not sound easy at all from what I hear and I'm guessing the last thing you need is a computer that screams 'I can play FEAR!!'.:p

Wow!! Thank you all for your advice. I really do apperciate it. I think I'll refuse the packages of what I order so far to get the 939 board and the faster chipset.

Oh yeah...... I WANT TO PLAY FEAR!! haha

Actually the reason for the upgrade is because my vid card is dying....and I need a laser MFC as well AND I need to spend more than 500 to hold off paying for 6 months, this was any excuse if any to get myself up to date for the next 3 years. Since this will most likely be the final upgrade for that time.
