CAGiversary!
Okay, I am not a PC tech guy but I am at a point where the trading applications I'm running are bogging down the system so I'm trying to figure out where the bottleneck is and if it is something I can upgrade easily or if I just need to be looking for a new PC.
My system is about 3 years old, it is a Dell XPS700
Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40ghz
4 gb ram
2 x Nvidia 7900 GTX 512mb graphics cards
I'm running 4 24" monitors at 1920 x 1200.
Now the individual spec requirements for the trading platforms are much, much lower than my PC specs. However, I'm pulling significant amounts of realtime data. Around 50 realtime charts with anywhere from 2-10 indicators on each chart, 10 level 2 displays, anywhere from 50-200 level 1 watches, most actives list, short list, news wires and portfolio tracking.
I'm running 2 different trading platforms, one is the execution platform and one is the charting platform. The charting package is new, I've only been using it a few weeks now but it is always lagging by anywhere from 1 sec to as much as several minutes during high volume periods. For obvious reasons, this situation is just unacceptable.
My first thought was that it was a network issue, that my connection just couldn't handle the amount of data I was requesting. However, a few tests killed this thought like when I brought a seperate PC into the room, running off the same net connection, to run one application on each PC.....performance improved and the 2 applications where running basically tick for tick. It is my understanding that if it was my net connection there still would have been lag in this situation.
Any ideas? I'm willing to buy a new PC, other people have mentioned Dell Precision Workstations are good options for what I'm doing, but if there is an easy upgrade to my current setup then I would obviously rather do that. I contacted Dell support and they were obviously completely useless and told me to re-install the OS.
BTW, I have contacted tech support for the charting package and am told that I'm not experiencing package loss and that I have a direct connection. They are postive the problem is on my end and not with the software.
