So I'm taking my girlfriend up to New York for a day next week, but I can't think of what to do. We're probably going to try to get standby tickets for Fallon, but there's no guarantee we'll get them. I was thinking of taking her to either MoMA, or the Guggenheim Museum, maybe even the Nintendo store, but other than that I can't think of anything. So I need some suggestions. Places to eat, galleries, shops, anything, just suggest away!
Thanks!

ice skating, really there is every type of restaurant possible I would go on yelp for that, museums/zoos could be really busy. Take the NJT right into Penn Station.

I second the Met (however, I'm a bit biased as Ancient Rome is my major).

If she likes pizza, hit up Lombardi's in Chinatown (it used to be Little Italy many moons ago).

chinatown is always pretty fun. plenty food thats cheap (chinese cakes and lomein on the street) and you can pick up bootleg porn and movies. They also started to sell marijuana paraphanelia..if uh..you might happen to be interested in that. aside from those, little italy is also there. i suppose not really too much to do except to spend money on shit but this in itself is pretty fun, too.

I just remembered something pretty neat. Theres this thing where you can go "on top of the rock" meaning the rockefellar center. i think its like 15 a head and its pretty romantic with another girl (have some love music ready during the tour AND after). really great experience for me and i reccomend it to end the night.

If it's nice, take a walk through Central Park. End the walk on the upper west side and then hit up the Museum of Natural History. From there, it's a quick subway ride back downtown.

Ask if she wants to see a Broadway show. It sounds girly but there are many great productions out there that you can see on the cheap.

Take her on a gastronomic adventure too. You'll probably never find the same large, broad, and varied selection of food as you'll have in NYC.

Museum of Natural History is "free" to get into. They offer a suggested donation of $20 bucks but you can get in for nothing. When I go with friends we usually leave a couple of bucks per person. Private donations, taxes, etc pay for the rest.

If the weather is pretty clear take her to Top of the Rock at 30 Rock behind the Ice Skating Rink. The Nintendo Store is a 1 minute walk to the left of the Rink. It offers an unobstructed 360 view of NYC including all of Central Park. You can see a couple of miles into the distance during clear weather. Tickets go for around $20 per person about the same price as the Empire State Building but you get a better view and not a long as a wait. They also used to sell and might still do a combo back with MOMA for $30 per person. Each one seperate is $20 so you save 10 bucks. I also believe the MOMA is closed on Tuesdays so be sure to check online before you go.

Avoid the Central Park Zoo. It's a major bust because its so small.

Have either of you been to the city before or in the recent past?

Don't. Go to DC instead, it's about equidistant from Philly and most of our museums are free. Although as someone who lives in DC and grew up in Boston (thus not being a fan of NYC) I'm somewhat biased.

NYC does have some great museums though, if you're dead set on subjecting her to that noisy city of jerks. ;)

Quoted for truth.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. And if you have more ideas keep em' coming.

I visit NYC a few times a year, but this is only her second time there. She's already been to MoMA so I don't think we'll be going there. It's probably going to be pretty freakin' cold when we go up so we'll avoid anything outside.

I think we're leaning toward Museum of Natural history, then maybe some shopping and Chinatown. If we don't get into Fallon I think we'll stop by the Guggenheim.

Remember what I told you about the Museum of Natural History. The ticket price is nothing more than a suggested donation.

The Tim Burton exhibit is a really huge line to get in. They are selling timed tickets for the exhibit. So you can beat the line wait.

Chinatown was already mentioned, but if you don't want to go there, the East Village always has interesting places. Also, there's a theatre that shows less mainstream movies on Houston.
