I need to get a suit for some up coming interviews, but I've never EVER had one/bought one before. I'm not sure if I should order online, or try to find somewhere to buy in store. I'm about 6'4" and 210+ pounds with broad shoulders and a V-Tapering waist, so I'm not sure if it would be better to just have it tailored somewhere.

Regardless, does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy?

Don't do online -- especially for your first one, you need to go in and get sized, try on a few different ones, let the guys there give you some advice, and get it tailored to you.

I don't *think* you're big enough to have to hit the Big & Tall circuit, so Syms is good, and sometimes Men's Wearhouse is better than you'd expect, if your only options are chains. There are also places like Hugo Boss and Brooks Brothers, which require mucho dinero, but you get what you pay for.

There's a decent "how to" on buying your first suit here:

Good luck.

Here are a few sizing charts that you can use if you plan on purchasing online.

You just missed out on a one day sale at Macys.com with a buy one, get one free sale. It was supposed to be a buy two, get one free sale, but a sales glitch changed it to b1g1. I bought two Calvin Klein suits for under $270 (that includes tax and shipping too). I'll probably spend $50 to $60 on custom tailoring, but $190 each for a name brand suit is terrific! They're not high end like Hugo Boss, but they are better quality than menswearhouse. Good luck on finding a deal.

I bought my first suit at the Men's Wherehouse and my experience was excellent. It cost a lot of money but I nailed the first interview I had with the suit and I never used it again. (Its still a kick-ass suit though).

The guys at the Mens Wherehouse had to go to school for training on Men's styles. They told me some tips about suits - for example, if you have a three button jacket, you should alway keep the bottom button unbutton..etc. I also learned which suits are appropriate for job interviews, which ones are better for a night on the town, etc..

The Men's Wherehouse was not cheap though. I thought the experience was worth it though..

Kohl's usually has some pretty good sales on decent suits. But I also highly recommend the Mens Warehouse for good suits that are not crazy high in price.

Sadly, if you want to look good you are most likely going to have to go into a store and get it custom tailored.

Once upon a time I got one at Mens Warehouse. I think it cost me roughly 450. That included two ties, two button up shirts, suit jacket, pants, and custom tailoring.

Nowadays I pick up random ties, dress shirts, and pants from macys. Macys has their own tie line called Alfani, depending upon your tastes they make some pretty good looking ties (as well as some god awful ones). Their dress shirts are not that bad either, and since Alfani is their housebrand they tend to be one sale.

And just like the other guy who got his suit at Mens Warehouse, mine is hanging in my closet still in a drycleaning bag. I still wear the ties though. "Interview" suits tend to be an investment, seems pricey but you are using it give yourself a better presentation for a job.

My interview is for an Air Force Officer Commission, so I want to look as presentable as possible.

S@K Menswear is having a two for 1 sale, I think there might be one 20 minutes away, so I might try there first.

My problem is that I'm torn between looking professional and wanting something that's "fashion forward". I think 3 button suits are just...old hat.

For your first suit (and I'm guessing you won't be wearing one too often anyway) just get one at Men's Warehouse or S&K. Just make sure they sell you one that has vents in the back. Ventless suits just irritate me. Make sure you don't get something too fucking big in the shoulders, too. I hate it when I see suits that extend an inch out past the shoulder.

1) Definately get a tailored suit. Whether the suit fits makes a huge difference in your appearance.

2) Men's Wearhouse is a solid brand with nice suits and aggressive pricing. The people there aren't stuffy and stodgy either.

3) Two for one sales are nice, but if you plan to wear a suit only rarely, it's not saving you any money.

Add another recomendation for Mens Wharehouse. Good service, but they will try to upsell the hell out of you by adding overpriced shirts, ties, accessories, ect.

As far as shirts and ties, when I had a job that required dressing up, I ususally bought them at Ross or TJ Max, especially the clearance stuff. You can get designer shirts for around $20 ($10 on clearance) and ties for ~$12-15 (Ive gotten TH, Nautica, and RL ties for $1 on clearance).

Never buy a suit online, the tailor's at stores will know which size fits you best and then tailor it from there. And I wouldn't buy any accessories from Men's warehouse. You can easily find cheaper shirts, ties, etc. at other stores.

It's near impossible for me to find a suit that fits me at any of those stores, I'm 5'5 about 115lbs.

PM the CAG member DarthBudge, he knows all about this stuff; dude has tons of hookups when it comes to buying suits too.

Definitely go in somewhere like Men's Warehouse. Find a competent worker who can get your suit measured and tailored appropriately.

I second 62t's mention that you might want to check Goodwill just to see if they have anything that suits your fancy and fits. I got a real nice sport coat there for like 5 bucks (it fits me very nicely and I'm about 6' and 270-280)

Oh, btw, if you know a friend who is fashion-savvy bring them along and see if there's an Express or H&M in your area. The former is a bit expensive, but they have quality stuff. Plus their stuff is tailored as a European cut, which I find far better than the typical American cuts they offer at Men's Warehouse.

If you wanna go a bit more budget, but still look good, H&M has some great stuff cheap, but again, you have to know how a suit should fit. They sell suit separates like Express, but you can get a set together for about $100. They're also far better tailored than Men's Warehouse stuff even before any adjustments. I can actually buy a jacket there and wear it as is.

For dress shirts and ties (and, well, most clothes in general), I recommend Nordstrom's Rack. You can find some really solid stuff there at great prices.

Hi everyone,

For shirts, suits and ties (most clothes in general), I recommend You can find at Sears.com by going through Rebation.com. In this store you will get all kind of good apparels at low prices through online also. I have purchased so many things like suits for my husband, swimsuit for my son and dresses for me at very low prices. And one good thing i got 5% cash back of the total price. You can also try with this defenitely you will get good apparel and cash back also.

I recently had to get a new suit + accesories cuz I've lost 30 pounds here was my trip:

Men's Warehouse for the suit, didn't buy any of the other stuff they were tryin to sell be but they did say you get free pressings for life with a suit from there (to get the wrinkles out, great if you travel alot)

TJ Maxx for a shirt (and tie to go with it), like previous CAGs have said, I got a ralph lauren matching shirt and tie for 15 bucks plus tax.

Also was very surprised to see some nice cufflinks at TJ Maxx for 7.99, retailing for 34.50 (checked the perry ellis website).

Best advice I can give is to shop around, and don't buy the marked up shirts/ties/shoes at mens warehouse lol.

I am a large shouldered man, and also am very short. I go to S&K menswear for my suits. They take care of everything, decent prices and modified for your body. DO NOT buy a suit online if you have never bought a suit before, it will most likely end up a headache. I have 10 suits from S&K and love them all.

I'd suggest Men's Wearhouse. I bought a suit from them recently and they were thorough when it came to ensuring a great fitting suit (multiple measurements, having me try on the pants with the shoes I was going to wear with the suit, redoing the tailoring on the spot when one of the pants legs seemed to be a little too long). However, as one poster mentioned, the salesmen will do the full court press when it comes to selling accessories (ties, shirts, shoes). Also, the tailoring charges seemed a little excessive ($40 with a $200 suit). However, the suit fits great. For very important occasions (i.e. weddings, job interviews), I'd definitely go with a tailored suit and not buying something off the rack or online.
Goodwill store. No I am not kidding sometime you will find some very nice suit.
This is true. My friend got a jacket and pants for $15 and he doesn't have to care when it gets dirty and can wear it anywhere, while I'm super careful with my suits and hate going to dry cleaning. You may luck out at Goodwill. Even if you only find a nice jacket, it won't be hard to get some matching pants elsewhere.

I'll put in a vote for Goodwill (and other local thrift stores if you've got them). Bit of a crap shoot, of course, but you can find some good stuff. Though I'm not sure I agree with CouRageous that it's easy to find matching pants to a jacket elsewhere. If you want a suit, buy a whole suit.

Having said all that, for your fist suit you may want to play it safe and go with one of the stores people are talking about, since they'll give you advice on fit and tailoring. That's probably worth something!

I also recommend Men's Wearhouse for the suit....but only the suit. It'll be expensive, but is worth it for an interview suit and if you go traditional, it will last you 10 years (if it's just for interviews, weddings & funerals).

Shirts, ties, belts, etc.....look at what they recommend when you buy the suit and then pick these up and TJ Maxx or Kohls or someplace cheaper.
