Never order presale from Overstock.com

I just wanted to throw out a word of caution. Maybe some people know about this, but for others it might be good info for everyone to have.

Never order a presale of a blu-ray from Overstock.com. They will not allow you to cancel the order unless it is more than 8 days before the item is released. This policy makes no sense and I just argued with someone on the phone about how idiotic it is for a half hour to no avail. I explained that the whole reason a pre-sale/pre-order exists is so that a customer can lock in a price that they like. However, if something better appears they can cancel a pre-order and plan on buying somewhere else. I explained that EVERY store I have EVER pre-ordered at - Online and physical, will let me cancel a pre-order ANYTIME before the release date of the item.

She would not relent and stated all their B.S. policies over and over again.

Like I said, this might be known information to some, but it wasn't to me and I just wanted to share with the community so that others know that pre-ordering something from Overstock is not a good idea unless you are 100% CERTAIN that a better deal will not pop up.

Thanks for hearing the rant - hope it helps some of you!

It is listed in their policies. I assume it's in there because they tend to ship out 6 or 7 days early most of the time to get it there by release. You really have no leg to stand on if it's in the policies, so I'm not surprised they didn't relent. I do agree with you that the policy is stupid, but there isn't much you can do about that. Also, when you preorder, they take the money right away instead of charging when it ships. Just throwing that out there too. I like them personally and will continue to order from them if the price is right.

Well before you get so bold with your statements, just want you to realize that I wasn't saying that it isn't in their policy. And I wasn't saying I was right in the situation. I was just saying that as a consumer/customer - this policy is garbage. Whatever the "reasons" are (and I know for a FACT it HASN'T shipped yet, she told me) it is stupid. I just wanted people to know, that as consumers if they want to order from a place that has options, they can exclude Overstock.com. I would order from them again also, just would never pre-order unless I knew for certain something better wasn't going to pop up.

Just wanted to state my case. You can do whatever you want, but half of your comment doesn't even apply to the things I was talking about.

[EDIT] - and that is on top of the fact that EVERY other place I've ever ordered will let you cancel a pre-order.

Wow, calm down, seriously. If you would actually READ my post, you would see that I agree with you about the policy being stupid and I assumed that since you argued with someone for an hour about something that is in the policy that you weren't aware that it actually was. Take a Valium man, my post wasn't there to degrade your opinion, just to add my thoughts on it. If you don't want other peoples thoughts on it, then don't post on a public forum.

I also added that they charge right away from preorders, even if it doesn't come out for a year. i would say that I added to the post and you definitely think my only reason for posting was to troll or something which was NOT my intention.

Regardless, I'm sure there were people that didn't know this and thanks for posting for those individuals. It is important that people know what they are getting into when they order from an etailer, that is why I also posted about the charging too.

Thanks for agreeing. No thanks for adding more assumptions to what my post meant. Assuming things seems to be a bit of a problem in your comments.

In any case, no harm, no foul. Just wanted to point out what happened so others can learn from my experience.

No harm was meant dude, it's all good times here.
that's ridiculous, and why i will continue to avoid Overstock.
This. I don't care if they are $5-10 cheaper than amazon or newegg. I am never buying for them again. Still have no idea how they stay in business much less have the right to a stadium name.

Originally it was really meant for stuff that was rare, limited release, or hard to get a hold of, which is why people buy it ahead of time so they won't be out of stock when it comes out.

But that aside, I don't even shop at Overstock anymore because they're complete garbage anyways.

The shipping kills most of the deals without membership.

Only place I'm willing to pay a monthly fee to shop at is Costco. :p

I find this topic kind of ironic because all signs lately on CAG pointed to people being really pleased with Overstock and pre-ordering more Blu-rays from them for delivering their Blu-rays BEFORE the official street date. I recall it happening twice in the last month or so. Maybe the two are related. It's possible you can't cancel it later because they ship it out to you much earlier than the release date.

Signs that they ship it well in advance of other retailers. if people are getting this 5 days before it even comes out then I can see why you can't cancel within 8 days:
WOOWEE!

My Cars 2 came in today!

FRIDAY that's 5 days before release date!

Wow Overtock!

If they only had sales on video games I would preorder Call of Duty with them right now!

My Cars 2 just shipped today! Means I'm getting it Saturday!

Whooooopee!

From Oct 19th:

It's kind of odd,my Captain America shipped(along with,Thor and Lion King) last night..CA release is Oct. 25th I believe...yup.

The 25th is the US release date as well and mine shipped out.

Captain America shipped out on the 19th for me too.

I just got my Pirates of the Carribean OST and I got the 5-DISC set!

I applaud you Overstock :applause:

My order came in Saturday, including Captain America which is not supposed to be out until the 25th Tuesday.
Yep, mine came Thursday. I may start getting big release games or Blus here if Cars 2 comes that early as well. 5 days before release including the weekend? Score.

As did mine. I've never used Overstock before but I'm quite happy with it.
Seems like lots of satisfied customers here lately. Their price on the lion king 3D and others couldn't be beat so I will continue to use them. I just want to show that there's two sides to every story. Perhaps you can't cancel closer to release but at the same time you may also get your copy 5 days before other retailers even ship them out.

Well I apologize, it was not my intention of making your point any less valid. I think it is a valid breaking point for a lot of people so it is a valid point

5 days in advance of release would be today. And she told me they haven't shipped yet. I understand your point, but won't be that way in this case.

It's all good man, like I said, no harm done. We are a community here - can't let that shit get to us. Just wanted people to be aware

That may be the CAG reasoning for pre-orders, but I can guarantee you that's not the reason the stores accept pre-orders.

Many stores accept pre-orders to gauge how many copies they need to order themselves. There's no real point in Overstock having an overstock themselves. It isn't designed to be a placeholder or anything. The main reason however that most have pre-orders is simply because others have pre-orders too, they're all basically competing to get your sale on that item first. Overstock tries to one-up amazon and others by offering many of their pre-orders a few dollars cheaper. They may also be breaking street dates to get your future sales too (though obviously not always the case)

regardless of the "reason" for pre-orders existence, it's still a b.s. policy that I thought others should be aware of.

Ehhh.

1st time customer at Overstock.com and placed 3 pre-orders, and like ssjmichael mentioned, got them all 4-5 days early even before release date.

Very happy, will shop at Overstock.com again, again and again.

Just a tip -- if you want to order it from somewhere else, go ahead. You can simply refuse delivery or return to sender on the Overstock orders, and they have to refund your money.

Overstock has sucked for a while now, I don't think I've bought anything there in years, and even then it was usually price mistakes and coupon glitches that drew me in.

What about shipping and handling? Companies refund that too?

As for Overstock, I'm quite happy with my pre-orders.

Received Captain America 3D, Cars 2 3D, and Pirates OST 3D all a good 4-5 days early before street date at a discount $19.99 price.

Happy customer = me.

Lucky... I never got lucky enough to even place the order. It was always OOS with them. Overstock? More like Understock/Neverstock. :whistle2:(

Yeah, they have to eat the price of shipping as well. I try to avoid this with companies I respect, but Overstock is not one of them.

Overstock is nothing compared to amazon.I never fell for those 3D overstock pre order offers..Black friday'll bring better deals then that .only other site that comes close to amazon standards is newegg .i can trust both of em.all others are no no .i don't want to save couple of bucks in first few purchases and then shafted for some fine print policy.MetroScotty advice seems right but again read their darn policy that they'll not be charging some re stocking or shipping .

Like others already said, although the policy isn't consumer friendly, it makes sense. Sure you'd be mad if you didn't know the policy before, but it's not their CSR's fault, it's yours. Their whole site is supposed to be about limited stock deals they supposedly work hard to offer. Their order model might require that the item has to already be in the shipping pipeline by that time, and can't cancel. Or they have to have precise numbers of preorders by a certain time to finalize their allotment terms. Preordering was meant to reserve, not just lock in a price so you can cancel later.

If you want consumer friendly policies, shop at amazon. But even they seem to put things in the "in process" can't be canceled mode faster these days.
Did I miss the part about what deal this is?
You mean you don't see how great of a deal this is?

Look closer!

I will continue to pre-order from Overstock.com, as I read their policies and agreed to them before placing a pre-order.

Never ordered anything from Overstock i've read a lot complaints. I will also not order anything from them bc they havent changed their x-mas commercial in years and o.co just pisses me off for some reason.

No complaints here how Overstock runs their policies ,it's in the fine print.
Will continue to do business regardless, prices always ridiculously low for new releases and they ship em' 8-10 days before street date..

Got Lion KIng 4disc Blu Diamond Edition for $19.99 who does that? Holla.
