Well.. new questions (story in post #17):

1. Anybody know a free anti-virus app for Windows 64bit version? AVG won't work unless I buy the full version...

2. Is there a way to transfer my game saves to a completely new OS install? I really don't want to lose all my data.

3. Why does God hate me?

Old post:
In the past 3 or 4 days, my build (listed below) has been restarting without reason. It'll start up fine, run fine for a 5-6 hours, and out of nowhere it'll just restart.

Just today, I got a few errors and couple of programs froze and Windows closed them and then the computer restarted.

I've checked my system with SpyBot, AdAware, and AVG antivirus and they turned up a few items but I removed those already. I'm doing it again to make sure nothing was missed.

My temps are all normal. Everything idles around 33C, not sure about the GPU as it doesn't have a temp sensor. I do game an hour or two everyday which does raise the temp of the processor to ~45C.

I'm starting to think it might be my PS... it should be plenty for my build my +12V rail is kinda low... averaging around 11.52-11.58V, which is in the +/-5% range but it is getting close to that 11.4V mark.:whistle2:k

Any ideas?

you my have a bug run a scan on it, mine did that and it's some kind of virus like dorm or something,

I got hit with viruses recently. Ran spybot search and destroy, spy subtract, ewido, avg free, mcafee and adaware. Got a bunch of stuff, but something was untouched by all of those since some of the stuff kept reappearing. While your problem does sound odd (seems strange it does that only after 5 or 6 hours), and just because you ran some checks doesn't mean you got everything, a power supply issue makes more sense. Or something involving the ram (running out of space). I dunno though, I'm just guessing. You could always try a repair install, but I get the feeling that won't help here.

did windows give error codes/messages?

it sounds like a faulty ram module, do you have a spare you can try booting up with to see if it has the same problem?

or just boot with only one of the sticks you currently have, and if after 8 hours it's still running fine, try switching sticks and see if that one does it.

or if you have one of the programs that analyze the ram to make sure it works, that could do it too.

Usually what people do is they run MemTest with one stick in for about 6 hours, and then swap sticks and run MemTest for another 6 hours, and then put both in and run MemTest for another 6 hours.

Something like that could determine if you have faulty RAM, you could test it each night before you go to bed.

Go into your bios and tell your PC to halt of errors. That will give you chance to take a look at the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) and write down the error and code it gives you, then google the error code and you might find what's wrong with your system.

My system would get random restarts all the time and I thought it was the power supply. I unhooked every non-esential component from the PS and I still got the restarts. After I somehow managed to fry my CPU (don't ask, I was young and stupid) I found out by googling the error code that my memory was probably bad (PC memory). I later confirmed that by installing the memory into another machine that began to restart once I put the memory in.

The only AMD thing I have is the Cool and Quiet feature enabled, and the Cool and Quiet app from ASUS. I'm pretty sure those aren't it as I haven't used the app in a while. Windows doesn't give me any error besides the apps freezing that one time.

I know my PS is more than enough because I used that calculator to see what I needed and I think I got something like 385 watts.

I ran Memtest for 2 hours with both sticks and didn't get a single error. I really don't think it's my memory but when I get the chance, I'll try doing each stick alone for a couple of hours alone.

Thanks for telling me about the hault errors thing, that sounds like a good idea.

Lets see what happens today...

BTW, anyone know how to do a SpyBot or AdAware scan right when the system starts?

Either Heat and/or Bad RAM. Also check your power cables inside, they might connected backwards. Also check the PS to make sure you have the correct voltage selected. Good Luck!

Take out your RAM DIMMs and then reseat them. It has happened to me several times. Either a small movement or the heat might be causing one DIMM to unseat a bit, enough to cause a reboot.

heres a problem i have sometimes... have you ever had your pc randomly turn on? for instance, I go to sleep with it off and wake up with it on... I am the only one home so no one else used the pc. What would cause something like this to happen?

If I was you...my comp kinda used to do that...I'd get Hijackthis, search google and take the TomCoyote one and post your log here. I kinda know how to use it and could identify any stuff that I know doesn't belong. If you don't want to do that you should download Panda 2006 antivirus and install the trial version, that took away basically all my problems and blocked a bunch of stuff from starting up so I could see what the problem is. If you got some sort of virus that should get it...I dont know about computer specs though lol...just virus stuff since I'm reinstalling windows all the time and constantly getting infected xD

Right click "My Computer", select "Manage", then go to "Event Viewer", then "System", and see if there are any errors.

I'm on my laptop now... because my system just exploded. Ok, it didn't but long story.

My internet stopped working all of a sudden. It's happened to me before and I always fixed it by doing a system restore. So I did that and... hm, still not working. And Firefox is going crazy with errors and half my apps have been uninstalled.

Then I get the brilliant idea of actually testing my wi-fi adapter (it's a USB2 wi-fi adapter, I decided I'd rather not use up a PCI slot as I only need wi-fi when I'm home). Lo and behold, it doesn't work.:bomb: The things not even a month old and it's already dead... I know it's a cheapo one but still pisses me off. Luckily NG will let me return it for a full refund.

To make matters worse, Steam Crashed next. I know I wasn't going to be able to go online but figured I could still play some games but Steam, even though I tell it to go to the offline mode, does otherwise. And then it tells me to go into the offline mode.

I picked up a serious virus or something going to all those sites when I asked for a way to play CD games without the CDs. I accedently clicked on a "you've won ____" link accidently. I haven't been to any torrent sites or porn site, or any other questionable types of sites with this computer yet. AVG caught it right away and I stuck it in the vault. Amazing, with System Restore... since Windows didn't know it was a virus, I think it must've placed it back to my cache where it could kill my system. Stupid Windows.:)

But luckily all my data is intact. I didn't lose my 12 GB of songs and still have all media files.

I decided to return my current wi-fi adapter (duh!) and get another one... it's cheaper but it has solid reviews. I'm also getting another HD, a Seagate 80GB 7200.9 for all my OS files. I know it's overkill but it was pretty much the same price as the other HDs (under $50). Hopefully with 2 day shipping it'll be here on Thursday with my new GPU.

I've updated with some new questions, I hope you guys can help.:whistle2:( I'm not really upset as all my hardware still works and I still have time to get things up and running before school. But that one little piece of shit wi-fi adapter lead to so much trouble.

You should reformatt and reinstall windows, backup everything you need if you can.

I mentioned the optimizer because it was giving me random restarts every day I used it, and it was also very random, it cause the most system instability i ever had.

good luck.

I agree - I highly recommend reformatting. I just wouldn't trust a compromised system.

For question 2, different games keep saves in different places. First, look in the directory where the game is installed for a folder called "profiles" or "game saves" - something like that.

D:\Program Files\Doom 3\base\savegames
D:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Crytek\Far Cry\Profiles

I actually think it's easiest to copy the entire game directory (D:\Program Files\Doom 3), then delete everything except the save folder, contents, and containing folders. This will let you simply copy and paste the old directory on top of the new one, without having to remember where things are supposed to go.

If you can't find the save folder look in your "My Documents" folder. Some games save there.

E:\GTA San Andreas User Files

You can also look in C:\Documents and Settings\YOU\Application Data\PROGRAM. Games tend not to do that. However, lots of other programs you may have an interest in retaining the settings of do store their information there.

Finally, several MS games store save data in C:\Documents and Settings\YOU\My Games\PROGRAM. I don't have any of those installed right now, but I think that's how it looks.

Not to be a jerk, but this sort of thing really shouldn’t happen in the first place. When you reformat, I suggest you start using Firefox with the No Script extension. I also disallow cookies by default, but I just don’t like random sites watching me. For POP3 e-mail, Thunderbird works well, but anything that doesn’t render in IE will suffice. Run a firewall. Also install and use the immunization feature of Spybot for those times that you have to use IE. Run Ad Aware, Spybot and whatever Antivirus you wish regularly, but if they find anything notable you should consider securing your computer further. It’s possible to go pretty much wherever you want on the internet without getting malware, but it takes a little work.

For question 3, because you touch yourself at night.

Well, thanks for the advice but it's all already been figured out a yesterday. It wasn't FireFox or Windows, it was just a bad HD.

While I was pulling out my data (thank god I have two HDs), my Seagate 7200.10 HD (my main HD) started making a funny noise after I made that post. I emailed Seagate about it the same night and they replied next morning saying it was part of a bad shipment that hit some online retailers like TigerDirect, ZipZoomFly, and NewEgg. They told me to send them the drive at using whatever method as long as it was tracked and they'd overnight me a new HD along with a gift.

I got the replacement HD today along with a $30 mail in rebate for the voucher for the HD (I don't know why they didn't just give me $30 but whatever).

I decided to get a third HD as well, found a 80GB Seagate on TigerDirect for $53 shipped which should be here tomorrow (since I'm only 2 hours away from them).

So yeah, it all worked out fine even if I have a dead computer for a few days.
