Yes, I did it just a week ago. Works great if you don't care much about achievements or tracked stats; its all about the multiplayer to me. My main(expired) account has all my friends who I also know in RL so I know where they are.

i just signed up about 2 weeks ago and i didn't get a free month. and the thing is i dunno why i didn't get one?

Well, there's two things. One, did you choose to start your account off with Silver? Cause you have to do that if you want the free month. From the page you choose the memberships, select sliver and it asks you if you are sure. Select yes, and it brings up a message saying "Oh hey it turns out we have a free month for you"! (Hooray!!!)
Or two, you already created 3 or more accounts on your 360 or bought it used where all the free XBL accounts have already been made, therefore you "ran out" of free months.
