Finally eh?

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 Bundle
To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will introduce a PS3 bundle, which will include an 80GB PS3, the upcoming blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for $499.99 (MSRP).

Couple other people at the show confirm the news too.
How about you MarkMan, you said you have your ninjas at that show.

Oh man I would 100% buy this bundle. I've been waiting patiently for Sony to announce its next bundle, expecting it to be the 120gig w/ a DS 3. But this bundle would beat the crap out of that one. C'mon Sony don't let me down!!!

Well good for MGS4 in June (I guess I really need to finish MGS3 sometime before then).

And a big fuck you to Sony for the April date for the Dual Shock 3 at $55. I'm just gonna import one and pay about the same price as I would after tax and get it a lot earlier.

Anyway, cool news. I'll be buying it sometime.
Import Dual Shock 3 controller purchase.

Justified.
QFT! By the way is it only black that's coming out?

I'd be surprised if the bundle ends up costing any less than buying the console and game separately. It's already pretty weird that they'd bundle such a high-profile game. But oh well. At least it's a convenient package for prospective PS3 buyers who have been holding out for Metal Gear.

Anybody with DS3's notice any difference in build quality over the SIXAXIS? I have three SIXAXIS from launch and am now triggerless in two of them.

Nice and heavy.
Sticks are stiffer.
L2/R2 have better feel as well.

Oh and, the DS3 doesn't experience any bluetooth drops/locks(same with newer SIXAXIS controllers)... so that's definitely a plus.

Problems seem to be fixed then. Time to give a little money to Play-Asia.

wow if it's true that's freaken awesome for potential ps3 buyers. I would totally get this if i didn't already own it. I still love my 60gb :D.
Depending on the price, this might be when I get a PS3.
I would suspect that $500 will remain the MSRP, but the move from Motorstorm and Sixaxis to MGS4 and DualShock would alleviate that pain, y'know?

I wonder what color it'll be...

Cuz man. I have a 60GB, a white 40GB, and preordered the silver 40GB...

If this is another color aside from those, count me in.

I wonder if these new 80gb systems will use the newer, cooler processors that are in the 40gb. I hope so, since it's such a substantial difference in the amount of electriciy that's used (and heat that's produced).

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think I'll pass on the beta. I'd like my first experience with MGS4 gameplay to come from MGS4 proper.

Also, did anyone catch this?
As has been announced previously, MGS4 will include a Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack.”

I thought they decided MGS4 would include the full MGO?

Yes, but they changed that a while ago. They decided they would be separate titles. I'll see if I can find the details, but I'm sure it is mentioned in the official thread somewhere.

As expected, Hideo Kojima came packing a brand-new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, one that's much more story-oriented -- including the re-introduction of Metal Gear Ray and Rex -- than ever before. Kojima stuck behind the early 2008 release date for his latest sequel, and users interested in remaining pure for his "last" installment in the series will probably want to avoid the new trailer.

Additionally, Kojima confirmed MGS4 will come bundled with a Metal Gear Online "starter pack," but declined to specify what exactly that includes. That wasn't all for the Metal Gear universe, either, as a new trailer rolled for Metal Gear Portable Ops Plus, which apparently sold a surprising 400,000 worldwide, prompting the special edition. The Metal Gear Solid 2 digital graphic novel is still in the works, as well, and Japan receives a bonus -- a free copy of the original digital graphic novel, now with voiceovers.

Hmm.... MGS4, a good controller, and backwards compatibility. This sounds rather promising. Price please?
So, I guess this answers were the "missing 80GB's" might have been. Sony hording them to help these bundles?
They should have done something to keep a semblance of stock on the shelves in the meantime - those who want to buy one w/ BC, and now feel compelled to do so because of Blu-Ray's victory, don't have much of an option in stores between now and June. That's a huge gap - especially with GT5 Prologue on the horizon between now and then.
I thought they decided MGS4 would include the full MGO?
Just a guess on my part, but this might be the "game" itself, while they'll be tickled pink to sell you characters and maps via DLC. Yuck.
>>> Here you go.
Ah, thanks. I guess details are still too sparse on MGO for me to get too concerned. Wikipedia mentions that the starter pack will be supported by downloadable PSN content. That sounds like whatever's included could be a pretty complete game, and they'll just add new maps and characters in the future.

Edit: Just missed that while I was posting. As long as the starter comes with a good handful of maps, I'll be fine with just that. The main reason I was hoping it wouldn't be some feature-stripped demo version is because I'd like there to be an actual player base for this. MGS3S's MGO had a lot of potential but nobody I knew played it.

Almost makes me want to buy another console.

And I hope my pre-order @ amazon for the game comes with that beta for MGO.

Looks like Sony finally shot their sh*t together. My interest is raised now, but I still don't know if getting a PS3 would be a good move for me.

I wished I had waited to buy a PS3 (just bought mine last month), but I guess BC is a plus. This PS3/MGS4 bundle might be the best bundle ever conceived, lol.

Think about it.. via the Motorstorm package, Motorstorm sold 3 million copies of its game. Sony is trying to make sure that MGS sells well by bundling it with the system.
MGS 4 being included definitely makes this the best bundle available.... you usually don't see things like this until chrismas.

It makes me feel better about my DS3 import as well. Unfortunately, I’m sending it back to Hong Kong this week because the left analog stick quit working. I don’t know what that shipping will cost, but it will increase the $61 I paid for it. Plus, I’ll be without a DS3 for who knows how many weeks.

Wishing now I had just waited. Returning to a US company would have been much easier. I just have bad luck.
Sony is trying to make sure that MGS sells well by bundling it with the system.
Come on, man. Metal Gear relying on the PS3 for sales? It'd be more plausible for them to announce that MGS4 wouldn't be sold without the bundle.

It's funny to hear you say that, since traditionally it was the high-profile games that were bundled with systems. Mainly Nintendo, but Mario 1, Mario World, Mario 64, the original Sonic and Genesis, Mario Kart DS bundle, Zelda DS bundle...

Really, I think it sucks that this has become less standard for systems. Especially with consoles costing what they do now, it's absurd you spend roughly $400 on a system and can't play anything on it. At least Nintendo tried this generation.

Point being, I think it's awesome they're doing this, and I'd love to see the other companies follow suit.
