New 80GB PS3 bundle with MGS4/DS3 in June - $499 (pre-order game for MGS Online BETA)

So does this have a Sixaxis bundled with the 80gb and a DS3? If so I'm tempted to hold off on a 60gb from Gamefunk.
Come on, man. Metal Gear relying on the PS3 for sales? It'd be more plausible for them to announce that MGS4 wouldn't be sold without the bundle.
Well remember, Sqaure Enix was putting some pressure on Sony cause they felt that Sony wasn't doing enough to sale PS3s, which could make Final Fantasy sell less. Sony needs to do everything they can to make sure that Metal Gear 4 sells well enough to justify Konami keeping the game exclusive on their system. This is just another measure to make sure the game not only sales "well" but well enough to justify Konami keeping this game exclusive. Basically, this game needs to set some records... or at least get close.

This bundle will probably be in effect until March of 2009, and then maybe depending on the PS3 sales, and numbers sold during 2008, make the decision to bundle Final Fantasy with the system.
Its basically like Sony is buying MGS4(s) themselves and giving them away with the system.
Urg - I was hoping to wait for a potential PS3 redesign before jumping in. Decisions decisions.
Same here - though MGS does nothing for me so I'm not too excited about this. I guess I could sell MGS out of it and have the 80GB PS3/Dualshock 3 for $460 or so. I think I may still wait it out till Christmas to see what happens.

Ok onto my next question. A lot of the previously problems with PS2 games on 80gb are being resolved through updates, right? I mean I don't care for 100% BC mostly just the major titles that I could potentially go back and play.

sorry for getting OT.

Hopefully something pops up to bring this down just a tad more.

With every FW update, comes a slew of fixes to minor BC problems for various games. So yes.
Sony just doesn't mention them, they're famous for "stealth updates" in the FW.
It's funny to hear you say that, since traditionally it was the high-profile games that were bundled with systems. Mainly Nintendo, but Mario 1, Mario World, Mario 64, the original Sonic and Genesis, Mario Kart DS bundle, Zelda DS bundle...
That was definitely true in the 16-bit days, but it's a long-dead tradition. Recent pack-in games haven't quite been system-sellers, and they're definitely not on the same level as MGS4. I just figure there will be so many people who are jumping on the PS3 when MGS4 comes out, it's strange that Sony thinks they need to provide extra incentive. Of course, maybe I'm just over-thinking this and Sony just meant this as a nice gesture.

Has anyone heard whether the 80GB in the bundle is one of the old ones with software BC, or just a beefed-up 40GB model?

I'm wondering if there will be different colors or if its just black again. Hopefully they have white at least.
It has software BC, metaly.
Sony answered that in the blog in the comments.
Thanks, I didn't see the comments. For some reason I had half-assumed it would be missing the BC and that's how they could afford to sell the bundle. This really is a great deal, then.
Pretty sure this PS3 is going to features a giant gray mustache instead of the chrome strip.
Or maybe a tasteful cardboard box motif?

I haven't seen any BC software updates in a long time.
what can i do with the psp and the ps3 that would make me wanna buy the psp?... any short highlights?
This is my favorite PSP/PS3 thing: You can set up your computer to stream your media to your PS3 and then use PS3 remote play on your PSP, over the Internet. So basically you have access to all your media from anywhere with a decent [edit: wireless] Internet connection.
what can i do with the psp and the ps3 that would make me wanna buy the psp?... any short highlights?
Stream media from your PS3 or even home PC from any wifi spot in the world.

Remotely play your PSX games and some PSN games.
(and in the future, some PS3 games) from any wifi spot in the world.

Download demos and games for the PSP straight from the PS3.

I think you can even use the PSP as a rear mirror in Formula 1 Racing.
Or it was planned.

I'm excited for this bundle, but moreso for the possibility that they will bundle FFXIII with the system when it comes out (and hopefully it's the 80GB BC unit). I don't really have any interest in MGS4, so I'll still be holding out for something better before making the purchase.
Hmmm either wait or pick up a New 60GB for roughly the same price. Decisions.... :D
I overcame this dilemma by realizing that I already own a PS2. I've got all the BC I need right there. :D

I also own a PS2 but I want to play a couple PS2 games ( FFXII, God of War 2, Persona 3 ) using the PS3 to upconvert. My PS2 with Component cables looks not so hott on my HDTV.

Does anyone know if the upconverting is really that noticeable for PS2 games? If not i'll go out and buy a 40GB right now :D

I know I'm getting a litle OT again but does any know how the $100 credit for the SONY card works? For example if I apply for the card now and get approved but hold out till June will I have the $100 credit issued to me even if the promotion expires. (That is as long as I apply not buy before it ends)

First I'd check the BC of 80GB here . From there I guess you can make a better decision.

This is pretty nice deal, probably will wait to pick it up. Especially knowing that Socom Confrontation should be out or comming out shortly around that time. That is pretty much the sole reason I would get a ps3 right now, for Socom (not saying there isn't good games now and/or comming out shortly, but that's kinda like why I bought a wii, mainly for smash, and that was last year).

I'm surprised that Sony is bundling Metal Gear Solid 4 with the PS3 right when it comes out, I would think it would be better to bundle it with another game for $500 so people have to buy MGS separately.

You know, this could be indicative of a price cut to occur around that time. After all, they have lowered the production cost of the unit. Speculation? Sure. But I'm just sayin...

I'm not all that blown away by it, to be honest - but you can buy a 40GB now, or wait a few months, spend $100 more for $115 worth of stuff (DS3 and MGS4) and double the HDD space (which, with games like DMC4 and Lost Planet taking up 5GB of space on the HDD, shows that the 40GB isn't, IMO, enough space).

Looks like the bundle will feature a black PS3. Too bad. Releasing the system in white or silver would entice me more than the inclusion of the DS3 and MGS4.

Edit - Maybe even a limited edition color PS3 like the dark gray color of Snake's bandana would be badass.

After talking to Zewone ( Whom owned a PS3 ) I've decided it would be the best idea to wait until the MGS PS3 comes out. The only reason I was in a rush to get one now = No Country for Old Men on Blu Ray :D

Thanks for the reply Myke!

Sho'nuff. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be in your best interests to preorder a console - this bundle will surely sell like hot sex, IMO - so if you want MGS4 on day 1, drop some money at GS, and maybe take advantage of some sure-to-come trade-in values bounses to help pay for it.

EDIT: Also, have $10 available to buy Everyday Shooter on PSN when you get it.

If this ps3 has metal gear graphics on it I am in for sure. I don't forsee a price drop in the future because of the blue-ray victory. If I buy this it will be with my sonystyle card so I can get 100 bucks off.

$500??? I'm sold and will preorder this as soon as it shows up on Amazon or anywhere that is tax free for NY. It's basically everything I want as a prospective PS3 owner and comes out the week of my birthday so it will make a great present for myself.

This is a great deal and the move surprises me too. Why would you basically give away one of your biggest games of the year? Especially when it's the software, not hardware, that makes you money. It will be interesting to see how this turns out for them.

I think this is part of an aggressive strategy to gain PS3 buyers, simply put - they'll make software money elsewhere. Consumers could, by and large, pass up a Motorstorm bundle. This bundle is very, very enticing.

Moreover, who knows if Sony slipped Konami a lil' $omethin' $omethin' to keep MGS4 PS3 exclusive - and that this bundle came about as part of that negotiation process? Stranger things have happened - third party game bundles aren't, to my knowledge, very common in the US.

still too expensive, not that interested in MGS and the BC murkiness means I won't be getting a ps3 any time soon.
My thoughts go to how MS will respond to this.

This story is going to be epic. Kohjima is going to make full use of all the cell processors.
If the 360 gets a port it won't be as good.

I admit this is going to make it harder to wait to pick up a PS3.

I'm just amazed that they're bundling a Mature rated game with a system, but I guess it's just because MGS isn't classically 'offensive'. I mean, imagine the shitstorm if there was a GTA4 bundle.

I'll definitely be getting this bundle. I know that I'm gonna have to buy a ps3 the day that MGS comes out.

I would think packing it in with the 40GB, instead of the craptacular Spidey 3 BR, would have been more enticing at $400.

But, they got to get rid of the excess 80GBs somehow.

Realest shit you ever wrote.

I miss it.

Everyday.

Respond? Why? You're not buying it so I guess most of M$ target group won't either. They have Gears of War 2 to help promote, but I don't think it'll get bundled.

Also, looks like for right now the Beta offer is for NA only.

Doesn't mean the other regions won't get their own offers to join beta testing.

Microsoft bundled Halo with the Xbox for a while.

Maybe this bundle will drop the price on those 60GB's that are still around at a couple of the local stores. (They are $500 currently.)

I would want the DS3, but wouldn't care that much about MGS4. Guess I will wait to see what happens to those 60GB's, and purchase either one of those or this bundle.
But, they got to get rid of the excess 80GBs somehow.
I suspect that, with the cheaper cost of manufacture these days, coupled with the lack of 80GB in stores these days, that it's more likely that they're making the 80GB with the smaller chip than it is a case of deliberately witholding stock in order to accomodate the MGS4 release.

At the very least, if they had too many 80GB lying around, they'd have some on shelves at the moment. I still can't figure out why they aren't - though, of course, who would pay $500 for an 80GB w/ Motorstorm and Sixaxis when a clearly better option is right around the corner? Maybe it's an artifact of making this announcement early?

If that keeps up, I guess those of us with 20GB's are going to have a real problem unless we get a bigger hard drive.

I don't know, how long will you keep the files on there? Once you are done with the game, wouldn't you remove the install space??
