New dumbass on eBay story

Dead of Knight

CAGiversary!
Feedback
15 (100%)
Ok, like a month ago I had an auction for some manga. I got a good price on them, I got the money, left the guy feedback, and sent them out. I emailed him and asked if he got them (which he did because the delivery confirmation said he did) and if he could please leave feedback. He said he got the books and his daughter loved them, and that he would leave feedback if he had the chance. Well, it's been a long time since that happened, so I decided to email him again. Here's what I wrote:

"Hello,
Sorry to bother you again, but could you please leave feedback on eBay
for our transaction, the Hot Gimmick books? It has been nearly a
month since you recieved the items. I left you positive feedback when
I recieved the payment, and you said that you were pleased with your
items. For your convenience, here is a link to the item so that you
can easily leave feedback:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=6909419998&ssPageName=STRK:MEAFB:IT

Thanks.
-linkura"

Pretty civil and nice email, right? So this is why I was so suprised when I got THIS back:

"look i could care less about my rating on ebay. i paid you promptly and that is all you need. i am not about to go on ebay again if i don't have to do it. which i don't have to do it. i only went on because my daughter wanted the book. it is done. i am done. i don't plan on going on to say anything negative or positive about you or the transaction. sorry. don't email me anymore!!!!"

 I wish I didn't leave him positive feedback so quickly. What a retard.

EDIT: Added this as a followup to my feedback for him:
Follow-up by linkura: Never left feedback, left rude email when asked for it even though he liked item!

That is one of the reasons why I don't leave feedback first, I only leave feedback when the buyer leaves it for me.

They are rude about it and it is respectful to leave feedback but it sounds like if they get any more annoyed, they could leave you negative feedback just to spite you because of the asking for feedback.

They don't have to leave feedback of any type if they don't. Is up to them. I leave feedback for all of my customers, but about %50 of them don't give me feedback in return. Is just an option.

Yeah, I'm not replying to the email and if he doesn't go on eBay again, he won't notice the followup I left. I can't believe he was such a fucking asshole about it.

Like lupe said leaving feedback is optional. Personally, I wouldn't have been upset with your e-mail, but some people are easily crazed I guess.

Putting the link to the item to make it easy to leave feedback is a nice thing to do.

"It has been nearly a month since you recieved the items. I left you positive feedback when I recieved the payment,"

That bit right there might have been what set him off. You make it sound like he is tardy in something he must do, not politely requesting he take time from his busy schedule to please leave you feedback. But still his reaction was pretty assy.

I'd also wait to leave feedback as a seller until you hear that the buyer has received the item and is happy with it. Just my two cents.

That's exactly what I'm going to do from now on. I try to be nice and get nothing for it. shaq-fu it.

I just started on ebay and out of my 6 sales (really 8 but 2 of em just ended) I haven't received feedback from 3 of them. Two of them said they would too. I wanna get them. I even e-mailed them, but no response. Oh well....

I agree 100%, I have close to 200 feedback, so it's not like I really need more.

The only time I didn't get feedback and was upset about it was when I sold about $1200 worth of Star Wars action figures to one guy. I busted my ass packing and shipping those to him and the fact that it was such a high dollar amount, I would have like to have had feedback on it. But what can you do.

I just checked his "feedback left for others" and he has NEVER left feedback for anyone EVER. I wish you could filter out users who never give feedback.

Then you don't get that many buyers. I know you want that positive feedback so that you can show people how good you are and want more sales, but oh well.

feedback is an optional system but if i see bob with 45 positive feedback and fred with 4 and they have the price close, i'd go with the better feedback and bid on the other one if i lose bob's

I do not understand why you are bothering the buyer
for feedback. 1st off you said you got good $$$.
And that he recieved them with no complaints.
You should have moved on from there. Instead.
Emailing the buyer 2 times is not cool IMO.
2nd time if I was the buyer I would have left
feedback for you.....Negative.

First of all, the first email was asking if they recieved the item and were satisified with it. The second was to ask about feedback. Why should I get NEGATIVE feedback when I sent the items AS DESCRIBED, THEY LIKED THE ITEM, AND I WAS FRIENDLY ABOUT ASKING ABOUT THE ITEM AND THE FEEDBACK? I think you're just trying to argue for arguing's sake.

Give me a break. He emailed him once a month later.

THANK YOU for justifying my "only leave feedback after the bidder has received the item and is satisfied enough to leave positive feedback themselves" policy.

I have nothing to gain from leaving someone feedback right after they pay, and everything to lose. On the other hand, a bidder has nothing to lose once they have received the item.

Now, I also don't care if someone chooses not to leave feedback. Unless you just got negged and you need some positive to "cover it up", what's the big deal?
Unless you just got negged and you need some positive to "cover it up", what's the big deal?
Well, it's mostly because I gave him positive feedback and he has very few feedbacks, so I was helping him out, and he never gave me any feedback. I only have 23 feedback myself (100% though), so I still need to gain some feedback in order to be truly respected as a seller. If I had 50 or more feedback I wouldn't be so pissed off. Let me just reiterate that I'm never leaving feedback first again unless I'm buying something myself.

I'm not saying the buyer is right in lashing out at you the way he did, but your message does come across as a little rude. I know you had good intentions, but it seems like you're trying to guilt they guy into leaving you feedback rather than asking it as a favor. If I were you, I would've replaced the middle two sentences with something like, "I don't have many eBay feedbacks, so each one is important to me... If you would take a minute to leave me feedback, it would make my day..." or some other sappy crap like that. That way, he would be much more inclined to leave feedback and finish the experience in a more pleasant manner.

While I know feedback is really important for you since you don't have much at the moment, some people just don't leave it. And some people don't like to be emailed specifically about it. (I tell my ebayers about feedback in the same email I tell them their item is shipped.) And though you already left a positive, your response to your own feedback for him was pretty retalitory, especially since the transaction itself went well. (Feedback should just be for transactions, not for feedback.)

That said, that guy's response was pretty awful, regardless of how he interpreted your email. I liked that you put a link in your email as well.

I stopped leaving feedback first after my feedback hit 200, after that I stopped really caring. But yeah a handy feature is the feedback left for others link, I check it all the time when i'm curious why some buyers didn't leave feedback. 99 percent of the time those people don't leave feedback for anyone.

she e-mailed him one month later and wrote an extremely polite e-mail including a link! how much lazier can you get? even if he didn't want to leave her feedback, he didn't have to be so rude about it.

I had someone leave me negative feedback for no reason, and then tell me when I asked "oops, i think i left it for the wrong person"

They agreed to do a mutual withdrawl and then told me a month later that the link was in german or some bullshit like that and they couldn't figure out how to do it.

Worse thing about it is that before that transaction I had 100% with 64 feedback.

I dont even worry with such trivial things, even here, Ive probably made about 15 trades with people, yet only have a 7 in the feedback tally

I do think the guy overreacted over something that could have taken him 2 minutes to do, probably took him more time to respond to your email that it would have to give you feedback

He did over-react.. but leaving a mention in his feedback about him not leaving feedback is childish and pointless. And if everyone waits for the other party to leave feedback, pretty soon nobody will be gaining any feedback period. If you were happy with the transaction, leave positive feedback, thats all there should be to it.

I sell a lot on ebay, and used to leave feedback as soon as they paid...but only about 25% of my customers were leaving me feedback....about a year ago I switched my policy to leave feedback as soon as it was left for me...now over 90% leave feedback for me, I do get the occasional ( 1 every 3 months) email about I paid quick, you should leave feedback, but it seems to work for me

His part of the transaction was complete when he paid, hence you as seller SHOULD leave feedback. (but don't have too) When the buyer receives item he SHOULD leave feedback then (but doesn't have to) I really hate the folks that sell something and won't leave feedback until the buyer does. The buyer gave you what is required (money) feedback isn't a part of the transaction unless you want to put in your description as what you are selling for some stupid reason.

Added to above.. it would be KINDA like buying something at Best Buy and the clerk not saying thankyou UNTIL YOU DO.

dumb.

I, as a buyer/sometime seller am now prompted to go and leave feedback for the three transactions on things I bought this week, thanks to this thread.
Added to above.. it would be KINDA like buying something at Best Buy and the clerk not saying thankyou UNTIL YOU DO.

I somewhat disagree. In Best Buy the clerk hands you your item personally and therefore knows you have what you paid for. On eBay you pop it in the mail and are at the buyer's mercy to be honest about receiving it. Even if you use delivery confirmation someone could claim you maybe forgot to actually put the disc in the case, the item was damaged in shipment, whatever.

So far, as a seller I've waited for the buyer to let me know they have the item and are happy. As a buyer I'd leave it once I have the item and confirm it is what I bought.

I guess I'm saying I wouldn't leave feedback until the transaction is complete. And that happens when the item gets to the buyer's hands.
That is one of the reasons why I don't leave feedback first, I only leave feedback when the buyer leaves it for me.
Same for me I have stuff in my fb section from 2 years ago they have not left fb so I am not either.

I have bought some stuff and the sellers dont leave feedback, they wait until after I leave feedback. If this happens I 100% will not leave them any feedback, screw them.

I paid, therefore my part of the transaction is completed, now leave me feedback. When I get the item if it is as advertized, then I leave feedback for the seller.

I usually sell on ebay anyways and just buy once in a while. I leave feedback as soon as I pack their item. I send an email that says something like

"you item ### (desc) has been shipped, and positive feedback has been left for you on ebay. When your item, if everything is to your satisfaction, I would appreciate positive feedback from you".

Then on the invoice I print and add the the package, it says the same thing.

I probably get about 50-75% feedback (as apposed to what I leave). But it really doesnt matter. Once you get over 100, that is enough imo to show that you are trustworthy.

I have over 250 rating. If everyone left feedback, I should be close to 500. If I receive a kind reminder inside the package, I might be OK, but if I receive an email month later, I might be annoyed. To me, it borders being a spam by that time.

HOw do you make a link like that? That's a very good idea...could you post how you made the link for customers to leave you feedback?

That sounds like a very nice, mature, and considerate way to do it. Nice job! [-o

That's exactly what I do! I figure that the buyer has paid already, and I leave feedback as soon as I receive payment. I've never had a problem. Also, I make sure to make proper invoices with the item(s) and send them with the package(s). Also, 99% of the time, I mail items the same day; I just hate hanging onto someone's things when they have paid. Also, I use Priority Mail all the time. Everyone seems to receive their things 1-2 days after they pay, which makes for happy customers. Plus, on the bidding side, I always pay within 24 hours, which makes for happy sellers.

It's kind of sad that eBay gets a bad reputation because of certain people, but I definitely understand why people are sour about eBay. Thankfully, I've only dealt with great eBayers.
HOw do you make a link like that? That's a very good idea...could you post how you made the link for customers to leave you feedback?
I just linked to the auction.... not to the feedback.

I used to leave feedback as soon as someone paid BUT most would not leave feedback for me. SO I to have switched to only leaving feedback after someone has left it for me. My rating is at 326 now (100%) but would be much higher if everyone left feedback.

Ah eBay. The place that both gave me life and ruined it at the same time.

I was playing Diablo 2 so much at one point I realized people were paying REAL MONEY for items, and I was making an extra $200 every two or three weeks PLAYING A GAME, and this game I rarely spent more then four hours a day on. It was a dream come true because I only had to spend an hour or two a day item hunting, and the rest of the items came out of simple fun. If I managed to get $600 every two weeks after fees I could have managed to compare to a $9 an hour salary on 80 hours, but alas the duping came in and the fact that I needed something on my resume meant it had to stop.

I eventually went back to eBay to finish up my old school collection (still missing some NES and Genesis games from my wishlist) and ended up burning a good amount of my salary. Once I was pleased enough with what I had I put an end to eBay again. That was a good year and a half ago and I haven't touched eBay since.

ANYYYYYYYYYYWAYS

I retired from eBay shortly after, but man did it annoy me to no end when people would complete transactions and not leave feedback. It only takes them about twenty seconds of their time, and when they are unable to spare that little time for inputting feedback It just annoys the hell out of me. As an eBay seller I try to gather as much poistivie feedback as I can (and before I stopped selling and buying, I had 100% postive feedback, above 100 ratings) and the more, the better.

V1ah out.

It generally isn't very considerate to ask someone to leave feedback. How I see it, feedback is there IF they want to say something nice about you. It's not even a 50% option in my opinion. It's more like, if your service was good enough that your buyer/seller has something to say about you, then they use it. Their response wasn't very nice, but regardless of how you asked, it was kind of inconsiderate to ask at all.

I don't worry much on the feedbacks when I sell an item. If i sell 100 items and get 50 feedbacks im cool with it as long as they're all positive. If I was the buyer in this case I would have totally given you a negative because I know that if I did you can't give me one back in revenge. I don't sell on eBay for feedback. I sell for money. as long as I get their money then it's all good.
