http://loyaltyprogram.indiatimes.com/articleshow/957967.cmsLOS ANGELES: New games for Microsoft Corp.'s current Xbox video game console will debut through 2007, Microsoft said on Friday, even as it prepares for the expected imminent release of an Xbox successor.

While Microsoft has not committed to a release date for the new console, code-named "Xenon," the industry universally expects it sometime at the end of 2005.

In a release on developers who will make games for that next-generation hardware, the company said "Microsoft is fully committed to this (current) generation and gamers can expect an amazing pipeline of titles into 2007."

A Microsoft spokeswoman said that 2007 is not a hard stop, but rather a guideline for the last releases of new games developed for the Xbox. Microsoft has not said whether its next console will be compatible with the current Xbox.

New games for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation continued to come out through late 2004, even though the successor PlayStation 2 made its debut in late 2000. The PS2 is backward compatible with the PSOne.

Microsoft said every major name in the publishing and development industries has committed to make games for the new console. More details are expected next month at E3, the industry trade show in Los Angeles.

yeah...saw that article too...happy to see I'll still be playing on my xbox through 2007 just about the time Xbox 2 will drop to $200 or so...

Even though I just got my Xbox in November, I'll probably still get an Xbox 2 if it supports the same Live subscription I have now. I'm a cheap ass gamer, but it's hard to wait for stuff like that.

Regardless, who knows if I'll be able to afford the system or regular game purchases with prices rumored to be increasing? It'll be nice to have games available on the original xbox, and if Live continues running, I'm sure many people who don't immediately buy Xbox 2 will be playing newer Xbox games.

I just hope it's not like the PS1 where they got a bunch of shitty budget games and vastly inferior sports ports while the new system got the good stuff.
I guess that means chances are good for backwards compatibility.
I was thinking the opposite, more in the line on the XDNA stuff where it is easy to make an xbox, xbox2 and PC game at the same time. That or XBOX goes to the level of kiddies with some sports and educational games released now and then.

It shouldn't be taken as an indicator either way. New releases continued for past successful machines well after their incompatible successor appeared, as seen with the NES and SNES. All this really suggests is that the existing Xbox will continue to have some market momentum at its price point regardless of what happens at the high end of newly launch systems. Millions of Xbox owners have had their unit for less than a year and have barely scratched the surface of game choices.

By the end of this year there will be few major releases in development but that won't stop a healthy market for bargain titles from existing for a year or so. Many companies may be more conservative this time around on how quickly they commit all of their resources to the newer systems. An EA VP admitted they probably stopped their development of PS1 games too soon in pursuit of the then small PS2 market.

Even if the PS3 isn't backward compatible there will be a lot of PS2 releases coming. As development of new PS2 titles winds down a lot of companies, especially in Japan, sitting on title with no US version will start lowering their price for licensing the property and make it viable for the bargain market.

But does MS plan to release any 1st party stuff through 2007 or are they just saying they expect 3rd party developers/publishers to continue to make stuff for the Xbox?

The April OXM said something about there being very few Microsoft published (Microsoft Games Studio, maye?) games left to come out for the Xbox. Like maybe 3 left to roll out this year and then that's it as far as what's been announced. They went on to say when the 1st party bails, all of the 3rd parties tend to follow suit. Didn't really paint a very rosey picture of what to expect for the Xbox after this year.
