With the permission of Douglas Adams' widow, Eoin Colfer has written the 6th book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series! And Another Thing... undoes the terrible ending of Mostly Harmless (Adams' last book) and continues the adventures of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and the gang.
Don't get all huffy that Adams didn't write this. He always intended to write a 6th entry, but died of a heart attack before he could get around to it.
I can't wait to read it.

The audiobook version is read by Simon Jones, who played Arthur Dent in the radio plays and TV series.

While we're at it, let's watch the Douglas Adams speech I delivered in 2005. :)

ugh. Why won't they just let the man's work be remembered rather than try to bastardize it?

And I'm not getting huffy, but after the new Dune books, I always view these types of works with a skeptic's eye.

Have you read all five books? Five was not a great entry in the series. A sixth book needed to happen.

The Dune comparison is valid, but this is a different series and hopefully it turns out differently.

Hrmph. Five beat the tits off of four. It was the Two Thrones to the fourth book's Warrior Within. Was it Sands of Time? No, but... hey, look, if you squint, it kinda looks like it. I mean, if you ignore the new voice actors for some of the old characters. Right? Right?

But... I'm keeping an open mind about the new one.

I thought it was pretty good. I never read the 5th book because I couldn't get through the awful 4th one. So maybe this new book will force me to finally finish the series.

I only read the first and maybe second book (I think they were together or something, so I don't really remember). I should finish the rest of them though.

I liked the movie too. Not the best movie or anything, but I didn't think it was horrible.

I think the cast was actually pretty good for the movie, but the movie had problems figuring out where it was actually going and how it was going to conclude. I think alot of Adam's humor works better written. Some of sci-fi aspects of the book also required a special effects budget far behind what the movie appeared to be given.

The 5th book certainly had its problems, especially the end, but in general I think when a series jumps the shark there is usually no way to go back. With Adams dead it is even less likely the series could regain the magic with a different author. So personally I would have been fine with just letting the series be finished.
The movie sucked. Not even Zooey Deschanel could save it.
"Hey Slim, are you wearin my underwear? Cuz I'm wearin yours' and they ain't doin the trick!"

I like the movie, but the original book is much funnier. The movie lost some humor and added more action & romance. The action and romance I approve of, but it still needed at least 2 more Guide entries.

Glad to see others agreeing about the poor ending of Mostly Harmless. Adams always thought it was funny to end stories with the world blowing up, but he forgot after a few books, people start caring about the characters and their fates.

Garbage. All the subtle humor gone, replaced by Disney approved slapstick, action scenes, as well as other nonsensical additions (Malkovich's character). No wonder it only got made after Douglas passed.

Probably won't bother with the new book, I've moved on.

Douglas really wanted the movie made; it's the whole reason he moved to America. He wrote many drafts of the script, though the final draft was a rewrite by Karey Kirpatrick. It was Douglas who created John Malkovitch's character for the film.
Douglas Adams' mother, brother, sister, and daughter all have cameo roles in the film.
The movie may not have been a huge hit, but its trailer won an award for originality.

I doubt Adams would have been miffed that the film deviated from the books....he said multiple times that enjoyed how every interpretation (book/game/tv/radio) was different.

I dont know, I'm just like sure in Salmon of Doubt he mentioned how every medium the series has been put into has provided a different interpretation of the story and it didn't seem like he minded that.

True, but up until the film, no interpretation had dumbed down the material and filled it with slapstick. The TV show was brilliant IMHO.

Despite the horrible 80s special effects in the show, i actually like it more than the movie. I just think the show had better actors.

The show's available to stream on netflix, and I quickly watched the whole series, cuz its hilarious. Anyone read the 12th book of the "wheel of time" series? this is another continuation of a series whose author has died.

The James Bond books continue on without original author Ian Flemming, as do the Conan books without Robert Howard. Also practically every big DC comics title...
