Recommend me some new metal for my iPod (my current playlist is getting a little stale). Here are some bands that I have been listening to constantly:

Opeth
Shadows Fall
Trivium
Atreyu
In Flames

Thanks!

Other than Opeth, those bands suck. Listen to some real death metal, like Quo Vadis, Akercocke, Arsis, Atheist, Coffins, Death, Gorguts, Impaled, Lykathea Aflame, Morbid Angel, Nile, The Project Hate MCMXCIX, and Psycroptic.

I could list way more, but this is a good start for some GOOD fucking metal.

Nile? Ahh I can't stand those overused triggers, they have their creative moments though, silly midgets.

Impaled has a funny hiphop song now, what the hell happened?!

I have the Mastodon cd, but I've only listened to it once. I may have to dust it this week.

I REALLY like Killswitch Engage, too. I'm now getting into the black metal combining melodic interludes and the occasional acoustic guitar. Not heavy with screaming and growling the whole way through.
dillenger esgaype plan
mastodong
Today is the gay

Pretty much anything on relapth

Whats wrong with your post?

Anyways...I recommend 'High on Fire' - They are like a Slayer/Motorhead hybrid.
fuck new Metal!
Notice that the title thread is 'New Metal' not 'Nu-Metal'. None of that Limp Bizkit bullshit!

Agalloch
Edge of Sanity (Crimson and Crimson II are good choices)
Dark Tranquillity
The Black Dahlia Murder
Kalmah
and if you're feeling brave, Necrophagist

A Life Once Lost
Darkest Hour
Kalmah
All That Remains (new cd tommorow also)
SYL (new CD tommorow, i'm stoked)
Behemoth
Protest the Hero (Punk/metal hybrid....not harsh vox at all, but I love em)
Soilwork (The new stuff has some awesome choruses)
And of course the almighty SUFFOCATION if you want soe incredible death metal.

I dunno, I could think of more but I don't really feel like it right now.....

Unless you like annoying vocals that are claimed to be processing free, stay away from Cattle Decapitation. I have their first and it annoys the fuck outta me. The latest Nile CD is fuckin good, it actually has a little more melody to it. I've recently gotten into Jungle Rot and Abrted. If you're feeling ballsy and want some grindcore, I'd say give Nasum a try

Nasum is quality, but is weak compared to some grind I know.

DevilDriver
Nile
Burn The Priest (early Lamb of God, but better, IMO, than their music as Lamb of God)
Deicide (highly recommended)
Soilwork (if you like Swedish metal)

I second Dark Tranquility and Soilwork for sure...

Suprised nobody has mentioned

As I Lay Dying
Bleeding Through

and if you like Atreyu, you will probably like Bullet For My Valentine too.

I love these little metal threads that pop up every once in a while. Nowhere else can so much pompousness and pretention be conveyed in so few words. I can fucking smell the chins raising as the little kiddies come out to play the "Who can name-drop the most-hardest-core bands that you've never heard of and never will because you simply aren't with it?" game. Smells like victory.

To respond to your question, Neurosis and Sunn O))) if you're at all into the slower, doom-y stuff.
Soilwork (if you like Swedish metal)
Trivia time: actor Will Smith is a big fan of Soilwork. The more you know.
Lamb of God
Leftover Crack
Leftover Crack is punk,a nd Lamb of God is shit.
Deicide (highly recommended)
I have never understood the appeal of Deicide. IMO, the only good thing to come from Deicide is that Burn The Prophets, No Lord Shall Live got their name from one of Deicide's song titles.

No one mentioned those because he asked for metal.

Neurosis is pretty fucking good, but I have never been able to get into Sunn O))). If you want some really good droney doomy stuff, check out Jesu. It's the band Justin Broadrick formed after Godflesh split, and they're obscenely good.

I think you just explained it right there.

/is convinced the vast majority of metal fans are into it simply for the downright silly band/album/song names

No band name will EVER beat Paracoccidioidomicosisproctitissarcomucosis for pure length/absurdity/awesome.

And whoa, I just noticed I'm not the only person to name Quo Vadis. fuckin' a, someone has taste.

I was listening to clips of Scar Symmetry's new disc on iTunes last night. That shit's pretty good.

I watched a few videos on MTV's Overdrive over the weekend, and found some more bands that I'm interested in. God Forbid was one of them. Their new cd is pretty sweet, too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that. Plus I've always thought that Glen Benton was a total pompous asshole. Dude should have killed himself when he claimed he was. Not to mention is almost always drunk off his ass when on stage so bad that he can't even perform

Is Jesu anything like Pelican or Isis?

No Nu-Metal!!

There's no irony here, seriously!

Yes, but going by the bands that he listed, those bands are the ones he would like. Nothing he has listed is anywhere near as heavy as most of the bands that were listed.

In other words, actually trying to give the OP some bands that he might enjoy, instead of joining in on the pissing contest that Ledhed spoke of.

Why always the fighting?

He/She asked for suggestions, so suggestions were given.

If you start to describe bands, it will turn away/cause people to expect something.

Thanks for the suggestions, people. Keep them coming! I have an iTunes gift card to use, so some of these bands' songs may get purchased by me soon...
