New metal?
I dl'd "Through the Fire and Flames" by Dragonforce. Me likey!!!
Now get Valley of the Damned by them, imo it's their best song.
Now get Valley of the Damned by them, imo it's their best song.
Is it from the same album?

I need to start listening to Sirius (Hard Attack) at work more. That's how I find out about most of these bands (and also from CAGs).:D
How, in any way, is Devildriver Nu-Metal?
Downtuned guitars, simple "riffs", emphasize on rhythm over guitar, etc.

No, it's from Valley of the Damned, title track. Starfire is also a good song on there, though I consider it a ballad.
Is Jesu anything like Pelican or Isis?
It's a LOT more droning and slower (well, except the Silver EP), nut if you like Pelican, Isis, and all that type, you'd love Jesu.

The reason I don't list metalcore bands is the only two I can even begin to stand are Darkest Hour and Between The Buried and Me. The rest are just abysmal.

Seriously, I listen to pure NOISE and I couldn't sit through a Norma Jean album.
The Devil Wears Prada - http://www.myspace.com/tdwp
Holy crap! We've played with those guys before. Where the heck would have heard of them?

Awesome band, by the way. Probably my favorite still together local band.

This is just some of the bands I like and I own their music. It seems to me that most of the bands in here you would probably get into.
And that's a pretty darn good list there.

OK, its cool that a few people have enough knowledge to bring forth a brief summary of the bands they are throwing out, although this doesn't much matter if you're listing 30 grindcore bands that sound the same.

The only grinds band I've seen so far are Nasum and Pig Destroyer. I don't think Scene Grind like that Tony Danza one count. If you want grind, I've got a hell of a large list.

For starters, check out 324, really harsh, barked vocals, fast as fuck riffs, and, on Across The Black Wings, some really good melody.
Yeah that was a hypothetical, still, I'd take a few bands with summaries over a giant ungenre defined list any day.
I'm not very musically inclined, so I usually can only compare bands to one another, and say whether they're awesome. I can try and give some description, or perhaps link to their profile on Metal Archives (if the site wasn't always fucking down).
Nowhere else can so much pompousness and pretention be conveyed in so few words.
Comes with the territory, there will always be the people who feel like they're diggin' deep underground and know everything there is to know, and use those bands as some kind of credentials, it's just music, have fun with it.

I'm hesitant to drive while listening to Dragonforce. I'm nervous that I'd either get into an accident or one helluva speeding ticket. fuck, that band is fast!!!

If you like Dragonforce, definately check out Blind Guardian, especially the early stuff. From there, take a look at Persuader and Iced Earth.

Dragonforce and Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza from me too...actually, listening to all the solos in DF's stuff made me go back and listen to a lot of older metal which I'm enjoying.

DragonForce is quality (although all the scene cunts are latching onto them now that they've signed to RoadRunner), but I prefer Rhapsody when it comes to power metal.

what with everyone listing hardcore bands? 18 visions? cmon....

first and foremost get all the dragonforce so when they are huge you can say you listened to them first and you dont like their new stuff because its too mainstream.

Nice list.

Shoot. I'm gonna be busy the rest of the summer, with all this new music to sample. I got some stuff last night, and listened to a couple tracks by Soilwork, Black Dahlia Murder, and some other bands I don't recall right now. Now I just have to figure out why my shuffle function is not working properly on my iPod. It will play a particular artist 2 or 3 songs in a row even though I have the setting on "less likely" in iTunes.

LET US MOUNT OUR STEEL CHARIOTS, FOR WE RIDE TO WAR WITH DRAGONFORCE!

Fire and Brimstone collide in this monumental metal event. The two greatest power metal bands to grace your puny eardrums clash for what can only be described as sheer mayhem upon your unwilling wimpy ears. You will have only one choice, be oppressed into the poser disposer and leave the hall! HAMMERFALL AND DRAGONFORCE UNITE!

You're an idiot. That's not Nu-Metal, Nu-Metal is Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Disturbed, ect.... White boys rapping, and crooning about the "pain," and ex-girlfriends, and whatever else their white trash problems are. Devildriver is nothing like that. Not to mention by your definition of Nu-Metal, you just canceled out half the bands in this thread. I can understand if you don't like Devildriver, but they are not Nu-Metal.

Here....

Wow. People's interpretation of "metal" has come a long way since those bands.;) Many of these bands should be classified as either "hard rock" or "progressive rock". Yes, I was (or still am to this day) a fan of most of these bands, but would certainly not consider them metal bands by today's standards.
Guns 'N Roses
Good, but not metal. They're hard rock.

YES!!!
Poison
NOT METAL. They're a pop band.
Van Halen
Avoid anything after Diver Down. Not really metal, but metal enough to be considered.
Cinderella
Borderline metal/hard rock, but decent. Certainly not one of the best.
Dokken
See Cinderella
Kiss
Get the first 6 studio albums, Ace Frehley's solo album, Creatures of the Night, and Revenge.

AWESOME, but I don't know if I'd say they're metal. Still, they kick ass.
Whitesnake
AVOID anything after the s/t album. Also not metal, just hard rock.
Tesla
NOT METAL. They're a pop band.

I'd say Kiss is metal, no doubt. Certainly not Tesla, Poison or Rush, though.

Rush definitely contributed to metal. Poison and Tesla while not pop music, are probably not metal and if you want to judge by todays standards you could throw all these bands out the window because everything has nearly been done into the ground. I don't judge on todays social standards for music, I judge on what ROCKS.

I'd never heard of Metal Archives till it was mentioned in this thread. Finally found out what happened to Godgory, they broke up. Not suprising. Listening to some of the tracks from their side project which seems to now be the main one called Grave Flowers. More doomy type stuff, but I like it.

Might also want to check out Darkseed too, they're another one of my favorites...

metal archives is great.

OK I realise I have not contributed any bands to this post, as the genre has it this is "sludge" or "doom" metal. Metal that is really slow, droning and heavy, if you're into blisteringly fast death metal it might not be your cup of tea and a biscuit.

Mugwart

Iron Monkey

bongzilla

grief

eyehategod

just a few, if you do like this kind of music there is plenty more.

Does anyone have any suggestions for sites that sell metal cds? I'm wondering because I'm looking to get the new Darkseed CD that came out last year. And I usually go thru Century Medias shop, but they don't carry it. Hell, all their stuff is out of print in the US, Darkseeds stuff that is. I just don't want to deal with high ass import prices. Plus, most of the good sites that sell the more obscure stuff aren't based in the US. God, that all sound incoherant

Manowar are the closest thing to lush long haired professional wrestlers singing about women slaves, cherokee and veiled homoerotic fantasies that we'll ever witness in our life times.
what with everyone listing hardcore bands? 18 visions? cmon....
Henry Rollins and HR should kick your ass for sullying the name of hardcore with those shitty metalcore fags.

I'll drop a list aswell.

Hammerfall (Absolutely everything by this band rocks)
Helloween
Masterplan
Dragonforce (as mentioned)
Iced Earth
Angra
Finntroll
Rhapsody
Ensiferum (title track CD.. amazing stuff)
