"New Product in OEM Packaging" What does "OEM" mean???

BABETOOTH

CAGiversary!
:( I saw this as part of the description for a PS2 Modem Adaptor. Sorry to bug you guys but am not sure what it means. Thanks in advance!

Original Equipment (direct from the) Manufacturer. It's not a retail package. Don't expect niceties like manuals, included software, etc.

Thanks a bunch! That was very helpful? I may not want to buy that Network Adapter now!
Thanks again!!!

You are probably referring to the OEM Network Adapters from outpost.com. I purchased one several months ago, and the Network Adapter came in a plain white box with the setup disc. The Adapter works perfectly. For $20, it's a steal, and I believe all games with online features have an option to set up your connection settings, so you don't need to worry about not getting the disc.
As an aside, OEM products do not come with a manufacturer's warranty. Correct?
Depends, I've bought OEM memory that came with a 30 warranty, same as the stuff you get at BB but without the box and instruction seet.

OEM products normally carry no warranty, since the OEM will integrate it into something they're selling and offer the warranty on the completed product. OEM in this case being HP, Dell, etc., for computer equipment. If they do have a warranty, it's almost never the same as the normal retail warranty.

One odd exception to this that I know of are Western Digital Cavair SE hard drives. In a retail pack, they're 1 year warrantied. OEM/bare drive, 3 year. Go check on the WD website and you'll eventually find it.

OEM software, such as an OEM copy of Windows, can't be sold without a piece of hardware, which is why when you see a really cheap copy of Windows XP, you get a piece-of-crap mouse to go along with it, or something like it.

Its really stupid that they require you buy hardware. Why even bother?

OEM basically means that after a short period (sometimes no period) there is no returns/war. through the place it's being purchased.

Many times OEM is fine, I.E.

300$ for XP Pro Retail (non-upgrade)
150$ for XP Pro OEM (non updade)

I basically build all my customer computers with XP Pro/Home OEM.

Best of luck.

One other thing, OEM Windows requires the company who built the machine with that version of Windows to support it. Microsoft doesn't support OEM copies of Windows.
