new ps2 model sch 50001, is it really that much better?

I have a 39001 and just sold it because I want to pick up the new model (i posted something sililair a few weeks ago). Can anyone that has upgraded to the new model tell me their impressions?

I have heard that the new models are cheaply built. THis is a concern of mine.
 
Isn't everything that Sony makes cheaply built? I remember reading an article where the guy that makes the Resident Evil games didn't want to develop for Sony anymore because they purposefully made cheap products that would break so that their sales numbers would be boosted. Evil Sony...but, they have all the genres covered so you have to buy the system.

You sold your old model to get the new model, but you have no idea of what it is like... and you think it is cheaply built? Call me crazy, but I would have researched this info before I sold the old one!!
 
Hey 70 million PS2's not all of them will work perfectly. Its not like they can test every one of them before they hit market. Now how many Xboxes are there?

I don't recall asking for your opinion in my post. If you must know, my ps2 seemed to be on its last leg...making strange noises and vibrating while certain games loaded (specifically enter the matrix).

I can understand a few, even more than a few PS2s being defective considering the amount of active units. But the number of defective PS2s I see is staggering. It seems to not matter whether or not you take enough care with them. This has been the case since the system's debut, and Sony has done next to nothing to address the problem. And, granted, they can't test every system before they hit the street. But in light of the bizarre number of defective units I (and everyone else) sees, perhaps they should step up their quality control, offer a better warranty, or simply admit that there are recurring problems with the current PS2 models and design a better model.

Actually, by starting this thread, you ARE opening your post for opinion and discussion...on ANY aspect of what you posted.
 
Why don't they just build their hardware as solid as their competitors? They pulled the same crap with the playstation back in the day.

I didn't mean any harm my friend. You stated that you sold the old one because you wanted a new one. Not mentioning that the old one was on its last leg isn't my fault. But now that I know, your question is a little more soundly based.
 
The one you sold I believe is a v7, there's not going to be much difference between a v7 and a v9/10. I believe that the lasers and media compatibility are pretty much the same. Most v7s can read DVD+R as well as RW discs. The only difference would be the progressive scan option and maybe a quieter fan.

In fact, if you ask most people that know a lot about PS2s, I think that the v7 may be the most liked version, easy to mod, solid laser, etc.
 
I thought they were contrsructing them to be harder to mod not easier. :p The newer ones are supposed to have quieter fans, progrssive scan and work out the the box with remotes (I heard this too from gamespot awhile back about the built in remote sensor)

The fact on production is EVERY company tries to cut production costs. Sony's products just seem to have problems before the life cycle of the product. Some VCRs, tvs and yes even game systems sometime dont last as long as others. But theirs isnt the only one, just the most talked about.
 
new ps2 is same old shit repackaged to make you think that a new quieter fan, a crappy IR sensor, and improved DVD readback that is labeled on the box is nothing but hearsay and monkey talk put on there by sleep deprived marketing people.
 
I had a 30001 ps2, caled sony and they fixed it for free. The 39001 isnt that old.

I dont know what all the hoopla is about, there is a good chance a pstwo mini like the first one will pop up. Is any model gonna be anything better, probaly not. All ps2 models play games and or dvds.
 
Ok heres the skinny on the sizzy. (no clue what that means i'm white ok)

The newer model is pretty damn cool if:

You have a HDTV and you don't have the loot to buy a progressive scan dvd player seprately.

You live in a very very quiet place and the loud ass fan on the sony PS2 bothers you ( the new one is virtually silent dropped -19 dB)

You can turn it off from where ever your sitting without GETTING up which is a huge advantage for me b/c i have multiple systems but i put the new one in our bedroom cause after work i'll cool down playing that and when i'm ready to snooze i don't have to move just hit power and i'm done built in IR receiver.

Supposedly it's more reliable also but you know eh?

While it does cost sony less to make the new models 9/10 they're less likely to break down on you.
 
OK.....
got my new PS2 after the price drop......my old unit bought on 10/26/2000 was finally starting to give me DRE (but then again I haven't played with it inside). I'm personally amazed it lasted that long.

So impressions of the new model
+ DVD+R compatibility (Haven't tested with DVD+RW but it should work) All the new DVD Software built-in so you no longer eatup a huge chunk of Memory Card
+ Built-in IR and Power Off Mode remotely
+ Quieter Fan
+ Progressive Scan Playback

- Have to format SONY HDD and re-install all Software (including FFXI and PlayOnline Viewer and re-enter all settings
- Probably harder to MOD or CHIP

All-in-all...I highly recommend it if you have an early model that somehjow has survived this long. A repair from SONY will run you 109.99 with shipping for a repair/replacement (I called them about fixing my 3001.....which I will still probably have done.....). My GameShark Media Player finally works correctly for a change
