How the hell is Taiko Drum Master going to work on PSP?
You bang the PSP on a table or wall until you win when the screen goes dark permanently. Then you go to the store and celebrate your success by buying a new PSP.

It may not be a big seller but it's very good for hardware sales numbers.
One piece? Crap...crapcrapcrap...ARGH! i DONT want to buy one of these!! Especially for one game...
which game is that?

I keep missreading 'Karakuri' as 'Ikaruga'. Each time I do I get excited for about a second until I read it correctly.

Does anyone know if PSPs will be region locked? I dont see a lot of those games making it stateside.

Its Bandai though. Dont they have a history of...not making great games?

I wish they'd make Naruto for US. :(

No, they just have a history of not sending the good ones here.

So how many of these are just going to be ports?
The only games that I would buy would be;
Darstalkers Chronicles (Dreamcast/PSOne Port)
Devil May Cry (Most likely PS2 port)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Most likely PS2 port)
KOF 3D (Most likely PS2 port)
Tales of Eternia
Viewtiful Joe (Most likely PS2 port)

Didn't Sony say at one point that the PS3 was going to be able to play PSP games?

With a $300 price tag there is no way in hell I'm going to buy a PSP. For crying out load at that price I can buy a PS2 and all of the console versions of thous games.

Does anyone else see this being a big of a flop as the PSX?

id have to say tt that list is definetly quantity over quality. i mean i love ps and ps2 but sony better get its act together if it wants to be viewed as a threat in the handheld marke,t because those titles just arnt going to cut it.

1. Darkstalkers Chronicle (Vampire Chronicle) was a game released for the Japanese Dreamcast, the closest thing on PSOne is Darkstalkers 3 (Vampire Savior).
2. We do not know that they will be ports, and ports are one of the main selling points of portable gaming, for better or for worse.
3. We do not know the price of the PSP, remember the post "Nintendo DS is going to be $200", it's still on the front page of this forum. If you go on Gamefaqs, you'll see people spread the price between $130 and $600 depending on how much of a fanboy they are.

But, mainly I agree with you. As of now, i'm not getting a PSP and i'm considering getting a DS (it depends on launch titles and how well it's recieved in Japan). Sony is going to have to put a lot of effort to try and steal some of the market from Nintendo. I like the idea of having a really powerful handheld system, but with it's media and hardware capabilities, you have to wonder about memory cards, battery life, and durability. I've mentioned it probably 4 times already on this site that I have a hard time spending more than $100 on a portable system when I know that the next (hell, even current) generation systems will truely see the bulk of great games.

Recent comments attributed to Manfred Gerdes, Managing Director Sony Computer Entertainment Germany, have suggested that the PSP will retail for 33,000 yen (£167/$299) when the format is released in Japan.
Thats where I got my info on the $300 price tag.

The DS is coming to the States first.

things always cost more in Japan. I bet it retails for 200 and games go for 30.

Nintendo would shit their pants and it would not be alll that hard to believe, exp considering Software sales make up the majority of where the money is made and there are more software sales in NA.

I hated the N64 when I had one and quit gaming for a while because of it, so there is no way in hell I am buying a system that is going to suck for left handed people to use and has N64 graphics.

I'd be otherwise. Sony has never sold a piece of hardware at a loss, and for a $199 MSRP, they'd most likely be losing money on it. As for the game price...they might go as low as $30, but I'd be more willing to assume a $40 game price tag. Then again, there were talks of a 'greatest hits psp' line in a year or two, so I'm not nearly as worried about the software costs as I am about the hardware costs.

Makkai Wars is so far the only game that really interests me, but that's because I'm an SRPG whore. The rest seem like PS2 rehashes and remakes. Not that I'm complaining, but it's just not what I want from my handhelds.

The PS2 had to cost more than 300 to make. Standalone DVD players were close to 200 dollars at the time, and it takes a while to get together the technology to manufacture something on such a large scale.

Also SONY knows that if people see no incentive to buy a PSP over a PS2 then they will have failed. Pricing games in a similar range to the PS2 would kill their market.

on a side note, wasn't SONY one of the first companies to sell a gaming console at a loss? I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure they were

Japanese Yen = US Dollar
PSP - 33,000 = 300.99
PS2 - 20,790 = 189.62

I don't see a huge differnece between what a PS2 costs in Japan and what they cost in the US. Its only $40 difference. and if thats the case then the PSP might cost $260. Which is still waaaaaay to much.

I don't think Sony did sell their hardware at a loss. Are you referring to the original Playstation? Because that sucker launched with a $400 price tag, which didn't drop to $200 for about 2-2.5 years.

And I'm pretty sure that the PS2 wasn't sold at a loss - which doesn't mean they were making money on it. I know that retail chains didn't make much money on it; at the time, I worked at a Circuit City, and that was one of the only items in the store that we didn't get any discount on at all.
At the time, there were stand alone DVD players for as low as $100, but most were at $200, but that was with heavy mark-up.

I also wouldn't be too sure that Sony wants people to buy a PSP over a PS2. If anything, I think Sony wants existing PS2 owners to buy a PSP and everyone else to go out and buy both. Also, if the handheld market wasn't different enough from the home console market, then I guess you could say that Nintendo didn't give people much of an incentive to buy a GBA SP when you could have bought a GBA for cheaper or gotten a Gamecube for the same price.

I do know that it's cheaper to produce the UMD than the flashcart. I also know that Sony is going to have a lower fee than Nintendo. I think all that shit doesn't really matter though, the price of the games for DS and PSP will probably be similar. Maybe Sony will have a slight edge in the department as they are more willing to drop the price of their games. Still, that little margin will be filled with the cost of memory cards (and assuming that they don't come with rechargable batteries or an adapter, batteries).

Casey, you're right about the PS1. It was the first system ever to sell at a loss (and probably the only thing that kept it from being the next 3DO).

I really don't wish this to turn into a "PSP vs. DS" thread or a "PSP speculation" thread. I thought that some people might be interested in what games are going to be released. I realize that everyone has a different opinion on the system right now, but we really don't know enough yet. I think the TGS, in 2 days, will finally answer some questions that have been roaming around these boards and others.

Grave, thanks for the info man. I'll still be looking towards Japan to finalize my decision. It's more important to me that it's popular there than in the states, as the vast majority of games I buy originate there. If I miss out on getting a DS this year because I waited too long, it won't be the end of the world. If it's anything like the gamecube, Nintendo will lower the price even more and have Mario 64x4 as a pack-in when the PSP comes out.

alongx, it debuted for $325 (which was a loss believe it or not) and dropped to $250 within a years time. I'll get a link for you when I get back from work.

Edit: Cap, the PS1, Dreamcast, and N64 are much better examples. The Dreamcast sold for around $400 in Japan, PS1 for around the same, and N64 for around $325. I think I also can get some links for that when I get back from work.

Pretty sure the PS1 was only 300 when it came out, as I remember it was about 100 bucks cheaper than the Saturn, and by the time the N64 came out it was 250.

When you make reference to the GCN's price point and that of the GBA SP, you are neglecting the fact that the GBA has a stronger library and that it is the system Nintendo has devoted most of its resources to. I love my GCN, but the GBA library is much more diverse and has a lot more AAA titles compared to the GCN.

PSP will be like GCN as it will not have all the AAA titles for it right away, where the PS2 has a established library with tons of amazing titles.

Sega lost so much cash on the DC it makes sense it died. Sega couldn't deal with losing so much money on the console. Sony can afford to sell at a loss but the have history of making the loss up with add-ons (mem-cards, multi-taps, Network adaptor, HD). I'm willing to bet there will be few if any Official Sony add-ons to the PSP. So I think they will be less willing to sell the system at a loss.

I love how we haven't even seen any of these games in play.

Plus do they have any NEW games or just dumb down PS2 games?

everything that I've seen and read say that pretty much mostly PSOne and PS2 ports. very very few new titles.

I still find it kind of funny that Square has not shown any suport for the PSP. With the exseption of FFVII:AC But really how many people are going to buy the PSP version of FFVII:AC when you can get a 10x better version on DVD?

The first Japanese PS2s sold were priced at a massive loss but not intentionally. The chip set was designed with .18 micron manufacturing as part of the plan. Sony underestimated how long it would take to get that process scale working. (The Intel wasn't shipping .18 parts yet should have been a major clue since they've long led the pack in this area.) This meant they had to deliver the first generation with .25 micron chips that originally existed solely for engineering use and early developer kits. These chips had horrible yields, said to be as low as 15% on some wafers. This means many of those early PS2s cost well over the retail just for those chips alone.

Obviously, Sony bit the bullet and worked through the problem but it did add a couple of months before they started to be in profits on the PS2 product line.

ANd no matter what every game and system ever made has produced a profit thanks to the price fixing in Europe.

Thanks for footing the bill Europe!
