I used to scoff at graphic novels. I used to say that "graphic novel" was just a term that nerds gave to their comic books to make them feel a little less dorky.

But then, after telling somebody how much I love everything zombies, they said I should check out The Walking Dead.

I checked it out, and now I feel like this is something I want to get into. So my question is, what good horror graphic novels are out there? I saw one at B&N today called 30 Days of Night. Is that any good? Anyway, any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about that one. The art style isn't quite what i'm looking for, but i'll check it out a little more just to be sure. Thanks for the tip.

Anyone else? Come on. I know there are people out there who read horror graphic novels.

The Walking Dead really is the best horror/zombie book out. You might want to check out Girls, although its more sci-fi suspense/horror. Hack/Slash is a fun campy horror book.

I'll have to look into some of those. I'm def. interested in 30 Days of Night. The art style knocked me on my ass when I looked through it at B&N. The Japanese ones are out of the question as are the Marvel ones. Like I said in the OP, i've never been into comic books, and that includes anime and super-hero type stuff, even if the super heros in question were zombified. I just think I would miss out on the subject matter because I don't know a thing about super hero stuff.

So, I think i'll have to pick up the 30 days of night and check out some of those other suggestions, but i'm still looking for others as well.

Hellboy is an amazing amalgam of horror, super heroes, sci-fi, literature, history, art and detective work.

Is it better than the movie? The movie wasn't very scary.

Criminal Macabre

I just picked it up recently, and its awesome. Great art, story. I'm going to grab the other books in time.

Ooh. That looks great. Is it horror though? If not, I still may check it out anyway.

Edit** Just looked into it. Looks something that's right up my alley! Thanks Citizen. Also, I found out the artist is the same one who does 30 Days of Night. Niceeeeeee.

Oh yeah, before I forget, i'm a little confused about what to buy when it comes to 30 Days of Night. What I want is a book that combines a bunch of the books that came out, or anything remotely similar to that, starting with the first one. But looking online, I see that there are various 30 Days of Night series, including one that might take place in space...i'm not sure...anyway, what should I be looking for?

I wouldn't say "better", but it's fairly different from the film.

I also wouldn't say it is "scary", either.

Meh, I'll pass. Thanks though.

Mignola ftw.

nicest guy i've ever met. and undoubtedly the most influential of his generation.

EDIT:

Anything by Renee French.

Some of these look pretty interesting. I might have to look into making an Amazon order. Unfortunately, other than V for Vendetta and The Watchmen I have no cognisance of graphic novels.

How about that new Dark Tower by Stephen King that just came out?
It's not a graphic novel yet but from what I've seen its some pretty fucked up stuff.

I have read the first 2 graphic novels for 30 Days of Night and really liked both. The first is just "30 Days of Night" and the second is "Return to Barrow."

My favorite series ever is "Preacher" by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon and while not technically horror (though his best friend is a drunken Irish vampire), it is full of some of the craziest stuff you will ever see.

Another you may like is "Torso" by Brian Michael Bendis, it is true crime rather than horror, but the art blended with real crime scene photos was really interesting.

Definitely pick up 30 Days of Night, the original is by far the best in the series, I beleive the title is just "30 Days of Night", the direct sequel is Return to Barrow which is good as well, the first time I read that book was by myself on a rainy night in my old apartment in the middle of nowhere, defintiely scared the hell out of me.
The Walking Dead is also an amazing book, if you like zombie movies you'll love The Walking Dead. The trades are pretty cheap, generally 10-12 bucks compared to 15-20 most are. If you can try to pick up the novels at a comic shop, they usually offer a small discount, so you can save some money compared to B & N. Hope this helps!

I haven't read a GN yet that actually filled me with fright, but like others mentioned if you like zombie films/stories in the least then Walking Dead is almost essential reading for you. I liked some others too, dunno if they'd all be considered to be exactly of the "horror" GN genre. Y: THe Last Man is pretty good, Preacher as well is decent and has some elements of horror in it. Berserk's sort of one of the action/horror vareity from across the ocean and quite good (though it's quite long too).

After you're sick of the horror GN, I suggest checking out some of the novels that are highly regarded in comic book circles, particularly:

Watchmen
V For Vendetta
Sin City
300
100 Bullets
League of Extroardinary Gentlemen
The Dark Night Returns

etc, etc. Actually, quite a few aren't novels, just collections of comics into one book. But most work like novels.

I just discovered the Walking Dead myself, I think I'm going to have to start buying comic books again.

It's what got me started on this grapic novel quest. I got all three of them two years ago and they're great.

One point though. After the first book, the art style takes a nose dive from uber detailed to a mess of scribbled. Luckily it has a good story.

That's because the artist changed, and I too am loving The Walking Dead. Just blazed through the first three thanks to this thread. Much obliged OP.

Glad I could get you into it. I loved it as well. I came for the great art and stayed for an engaging story. You should also check out 30 Days of Night. Mine is on its way in the mail.
