New To PS3/PS2:Which PS2 Games To Get

I just purchased a PS3 on Friday and I love it so far as it's exactlly doing what I need it for vry well. A BD/DVD player, Multimedia, Games, BC and of course reliability. I am a very causal player, I would say gamer but a gamer to me is someone who plays more than one genre. This is the only system that I own currently, and I have never owned a PS2 so this is quite a learning curve for me. I only play sports games, but I have realized that I ned to broaden my game selection. Any recommendations for which PS2 games to play on the PS3? I'm looking for the must haves of the PS2 library. Thanks to everyone for their input.

My friend, the PS2 is an ocean of great games. For that matter, there are plenty of great PS1 games you can play, too. Anyway, I suggest the Metal Gear Solid series starting from MGS on PS1 and ending with MGS3 on PS2. They're my favorite series. The splinter cell games are great, too. Can you tell I like the stealth genre?

Don't start with the MGS series, though! The stealth genre is probably not the first one you should explore. Ease into it, man! Start with a Ratchet and Clank action/platformer. Simple and fun. Then work your way up to the more complex games like the MGS series. Also, I would search the internets and make sure the games you buy have an 'easy' mode. God of War or MGS3 for example, have 'easy' modes where you can learn the gameplay in a forgiving environment. Search through the PS2 section at gamerankings.com and witness all the great games you have missed! Enjoy!

I would get Twisted Metal Black for ps2, also look into Psi-Ops a fun action game. And you cannot go wrong with the Resident Evil series. I really like action/adventure games, some sports games, but I'm not a big fan of rpgs.

But the good thing with some of these ps2 games especially the older ones can be found for super cheap!

Heres a few greats:

Ratchet and Clank Series
Splinter Cell Series
Resident Evil Series (4 is amazing)
Shadow of the Colossus
Ico
Katamari Damacy
Viewtiful Joe
Psychonauts
Okami
Metal Gear Solid Series
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
Kingdom Hearts I and II

and last but certainly not least,

God of War 1 and 2.

My tastes are a bit odd, so I'll keep my list the ones that seem to feel the universal love.

Resident Evil 4 - Great game all around, best controls I've ever played. The G4TV people named it the best game they have ever reviewed. You could also look into Resident Evil: Code Veronica X which is also a great game.

God of War- Sick fighting and sick graphics

Grand Theft Auto: 3/Vice City/San Andreas: Controversial, vast, and very enjoyable. So much stuff to do in every game.

Metal Gear Solid: 1/2/3 - Not only are these some of the best action games around, but the story held within every game is complex, mind-blowing, and at times even beautiful and touching (especially 3). Each game can be played alond and you would still understand what is going on.

Those are the ones that are just overall great video games. The following are not for everybody.

Final Fantasy (7-10, 12) - Great overall game series but ones that have to grow on you, since they are roleplaying games. The ones with the best stories are the lower number ones, thus only have PSX graphics which are a turn off for new coming gamers. On the contrast, the new games have relatively less -epic feeling storylines in the creater's desire to develop more adult storylines. These are nevertheless great games, but I would suggest renting one of these (probably X before XI as it gets into things faster).

Kingdom Hearts - Its a game series that is the offspring of the creaters of Final Fantasy and Disney which, while seeming like a horrible idea, produced a rather enjoyable set of games (to the point of making a sequal and even another one coming up). However, I would say one would have to be into FF games to really enjoy this so try that before giving this one a try.

Katamari Damacy - Very fun but very Japanese, test first.

Prince of Persia games - I do not know much about these, but they seem very fun from my first experiences (though i was enthralled in WoW at the time).

Uhhh, WOW!! I guess for a 35 year old guy that loves video games, I have a lot of work to do lol.....? This is soooo coool, I will be all over amazon, ebay and craigslist to see If I can pick up some of these titles quickly. Thanks again everyone for your help and tips.

The /best/ thing about the PS2 is that you can selectively hate various series/genres and still have many /many/ games to enjoy.

For example, I truly detest The Metal Gear, Ninja Gaiden, and Grand Theft Auto series. On the PS2 this isn't a problem!

My suggestion, especially with Metal Gear, is not to purchase all the games at once. Pick one. If you hate it, you haven't waste that much money.
