I bought a onyx DSL about 3 or 4 weeks ago and when I open it up the hinge makes a clicking noise. My friend (SIUFan) bought an onyx DSL tonight and when I was putting the screen protector on for him I noticed that the hinge did not making the clicking noise when opened. I looked at the bottom of the DSL and noticed that there was a slight difference...

My DSL says "MADE IN CHINA C/USG-USA"
his says "MADE IN CHINA C/USG-USA1"

If there is a new version out, I may go exchange mine for the new one that opens up a lot smoother.
 
This is a bit OT, but is he one of the people we played Mario Kart with? Because, just as a friendly reminder, I think you can transfer your info from the old DS to the new one so you don't have to deal with telling people your new friend code. The instructions are on page 20 of the Nintendo Wi-FI Connection Instruction Booklet which comes with every Nintendo Wi-Fi compatible game.

Hmm... I have a "MADE IN CHINA C/USG-USA" white DS.

It makes a clicking noise when I open it fully and then another click when I push it back again to its limit.
 
His DS came from a new shipment that we got in at work within the past couple of days. So some of the people getting a DS for Christmas should be able to help us out.
 
there might be some slight adjustment to the hardware, but it's not related to the clicking sound... i think that's just a random side effect of the design... me and a friend each purchased a polar and an onyx on their respective launch days. my polar does not click and my onyx does. his polar clicks but his onyx does not. i have 2 other friends that imported cobalt lites... one clicks and the other doesn't. from everything i've seen, it's just kinda luck of the draw.... like dead pixels and cracking hinges.
 
my girlfriends onyx DS lite doesnt do the clicking noise and she's had hers since launch.. and hers is USG-USA, no 1. it bothers the fuck out of her too 'cus mine does it. haha
 
Is there a way to find out which version you have without opening it? Otherwise I might go back to EBGames and see if I can get a newer one.

The outside UPC Code on my box says "USG S KB USZ"

No, you'll have to open it up and look at the bottom of the DS to know for sure. After I get off work tonight, I might email Nintendo and try to find out what the difference is between the model numbers.

I have a DS Lite Onyx (MADE IN CHINA C/USG-USA-1), purchased recently at Best Buy on 12/20 or 12/21.

It makes an initial click when I open it to an obtuse 145-150 degree angle, and another click when it it fully extended 180 degrees. When I close to the DSL, it only makes a click at the obtuse angle.

It seems sturdy and I was really worried about it at first, thinking the hinge might snap off as with the Polar Whites, but I believe it to just act as confirm that it's snapping into place (locking it.) Although when I move it to the first clicking angle, it sounds and feels like the clicking sound is eminating from the right hinge only.
