New Wii to come out in 2007

ha ha javeryh, you're too much.

I already have several DVD players so this is no big deal to me. It could potentially sway new customers in the future, though, so I can see why Nintendo wants to do this.

At first they only announced that they will add dvd playback for the wii
only in japan...

but recently the Sonic team or whatever said that they would be working on dvd playback for the US too...

but i agree that i'm kind of glad nintendo didnt force us to play for dvd playback if everyone already has dvd players... that did make the price of the wii a bit cheaper somewhat (even tho i still think the price is high)
What happened to the single SKU?

Nintendo should have just included DVD movie playback from the start.
No, they should just not include it at all.

Why not? The Wii can play DVDs...Nintendo just needs to pay for the licensing fees I believe. They included all this other crap like the weather and news channels. I would love for this to play DVDs so I can swap out my PS2 and put this in my car instead.

if you need a DVD player, there are plenty of better, cheaper, smaller options than the Wii. And I don't think you want to put a Wii in your car. Motion sensing + road movement = lose.

I see that some people are getting worked up about this(on here and various sites), but I don't think DVD playback should make any difference to most gamers. I mean come on, you can go to wal-mart and buy a crappy DVD player for around $20 or so. I think most people are just worried/mad that Nintendo just announced a change to a system that isn't out yet. So what? I'm still going use mine for the purpose I bought it for, to play games!

I can't see why this wouldn't just be an optional software upgrade. The games themselves are already on DVDs. It's just a matter of resolving the licensing issue and creating some sort of player software.

One thing to keep in mind: Since the Wii does not have digital audio out, you're not going to be able to take advantage of true surround sound on DVD movies.
