it was, yes ;)

Hey guys I really love Final Fantasy series and haven't bought this game yet. I know that all FF fanboys should buy it but I'm just wondering everyone's opinions about is it really as bad as some say? o_O

To be honest, its not that bad. It might be disappointing for fanboys and advid gamers, but if you're a true fan of the series, you'll appreciate it for what its worth.

ok well you should know that each installment can be ridiculously different from the last, so you being a fan of the previous ones doesn't mean much here. Watch a couple trailers and gameplay vids, read a developer article. most of the things people complain about with this game are aspects that can be seen from 5 minutes of footage.

it's a superb RPG, really streamlined but also quite challenging. Great story and characters (corny as always though ). There's not much to explore in the game and the customization is pretty limited (so no towns, shopping, raising chocobos etc..). Still, the game is pretty expansive and beautiful. If you want some actually listed flaws then I'd say the battle pacing suffers occasionally from routine fights, and as stated before -- dialogue is a bit cheesy despite the great voice performances. But the main things that will get you down on this game are merely tastes in design. So if traveling down a set path and being interrupted by cutscenes doesn't sound like you're kind of RPG, save the money -- and on the other hand, that may just be the best thing ever to you.

it's pretty bold, but for $25 maybe that's the right price to try a bold game out.

Heh, alright thanks a bunch! Actually, all this time I've pretty much kept away from everything I've heard about it so that I really only know some of the character names!! But I did watch the fighting for a minute before and that seemed great. So I think I will pick this up for $25 new!!

hmmm tempted... but i think ill pass this time. by the time i actually get around to playing it, it will likely be sub $20... pretty good deal though

Yes. Wait for $20 or under. The story and graphics are great, the gameplay sucks monkey balls. If you're a graphics whore you'll love it, if you want an actual game you won't.

Glad I got this for $20 at BB a couple weeks ago. Haven't started it, but I liked the old games. I figure if I do hate it, I can always get close to $20 back.

It's a JRPG so there's good and bad:

Good:
1. The design is insanely good. Weird or not, there's more creativity in the first level than most games have in the entire experience.

2. The production values are top notch. It actually looks like the game was worked on for years. I can only think of 1 section of the game that looked just "OK". The rest of the game was amazing including the music, cutscenes, and of course CG.

3. It's REALLY casual. This is subjective, but I liked that it was straightforward, the battles were generally fast, and when you died you literally restarted at the same battle.

Bad:

1. The story doesn't translate. The general ideas do but the dialogue is absurd and the same stuff people who hate JRPGs mock.

2. Little customization. The game is as limited as it is straightforward. It's not as bad as ME2 but between the fact that party members have to become multifaceted and there's limited item management, it doesn't feel like you really mold the characters.

3. Little variety. The side quest system is shallow and there's no decision making in the game as far as the story is concerned. I think these aspects are pretty much RPG fundamentals these days.

I'm tempted, but given the size of my backlog, I think I can wait until this gets sub-$20 on another deal (I was out of the country when the Best Buy for $20 deal was happening). I've got enough of an open mind so I think I could like this...especially since the friend who assures me of this has, for the most part, been shown to have very good taste in the games he recommends to me.

Damn of course I didn't check CAG earlier in the morning.

Good deal with free shipping and no tax. Congrats to everybody to got on.

I was very disappointed, but if I went into it knowing it wasn't going to be GREAT than I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more. For $25 I think it is a good buy though - I mean it'll eventually be a PH so why not get it for basically that same price now.

Basically if you liked FFX you'll like FFXIII. The games are somewhat similar, being the first FFs on new hardware. SE focused on the graphics and new tech a lot, building the CrystalTools engine. The result is a very linear story driven game like FFX. You won't have the freedom to go explore areas until the end of the game like FFX and there's no world map. Personally I prefer the FFs where you have more freedom but X and XIII are still good games for the most part and I enjoyed both of them. Also these games had tough acts to follow in my opinion, I really loved IX and XII, it was always gonna be an uphill battle for them.

No no no no. I loved FFX and I thought 13 was merely okay. I put a decent amount of time into the game (24 hours) before stopping. My problem is that the combat is just too...dumbed down. It seems all you need to do is change paradigms constantly.

It just goes to show how different people view things differently. I LOVED FFXIII. I loved FFX too, and most FF games I played. XII was my least favorite, due to the poor combat system, leveling system, and items. XIII is easily one of my favorite FF games. In fact, I think it may be the most fun I've had playing an FF game.

FFXIII Pros:
Great graphics, videos, music, production values, etc.

Fast paced combat. This is the fastest combat of any FF game, and it really made it exciting for me. It was the most fun and excitement I had playing an FF game, such that even trash was fine to fight through.

Hard battles. I died more times in FFXIII than in any other FF game. In fact, the only RPG where I died more was Demon's Souls. There were random monsters wandering the world that could literally squish me flat, it made for a nice sense of awe.

It doesn't waste my time. When you die to a boss, you don't have to re-clear an hour worth of trash, you respawn 10 seconds before the battle. This lets you get right back into battle with a different strategy, different gear set, etc. I don't have the free time anymore to glibly lose 1-2 hours of playtime, and I appreciate that the game understands that.

Actually using your items / equipment. In most FF games, you don't know what's coming until you get there, so you never use the "Absorb X" or "Half damage from Y" items you get, you just load up the generic items that are always beneficial. In XIII, if you come across a fight that's too hard, you respawn, load up on the right gear, and do it again. In every other FF game, you power level to the point where you never come across a fight that's too hard, since dying means losing an hour or two.

XIII Possible Cons:
It's linear, which bothers some people.

It has few side-quests, which again bothers some people. They're all of the go and kill X monster variety.

It doesn't unlock the full party setup / customization options until 75% of the way through the game. I felt it worked well, forcing me to use setups and characters I otherwise wouldn't, and really give me a sense of the different classes. But again it bothers some.

It doesn't have much in the sense of item collection or equipment, which makes sense given the game world, but obviously doesn't have the loot whore appeal of diablo.

Thanks, ordered the ps3 version before they sold out.. looking forward to playing it even though its different from past ff games.

Graphics are amazing. Characters are so-so, some of them honestly I couldn't find a use for. I thought the story was stupid as hell though, only marginally better than than the FFXII story which literally put me to sleep. The combat system is similar to FFXII where the game plays itself and you just watch the cutscenes. A vast majority of the game you can just choose auto-battle with the right synergy and beat every fight.

The good thing is that the game has PS3 themes that you can unlock, the only good ones are the girl ones however. The best one is Serah's but her's is basically 100% completion of the game which is like an 80+ hour commitment. I have Vanille's right now.

I only paid $30 for it, and I flipped it for Uncharted 2. So I don't really regret buying it. But people who paid $60 have good reason to be disappointed.

I finally bit on this, I had planned to pick it up after it dropped in price and this seemed like a great price.

Thanks OP, been looking for a new JRPG to play, haven't played one since Lost Odyssey.

XIII should not be comparable to X. Yes, they are both linear, but that leaves them supported by the story and characters, which is where XIII completely falls apart. The gameplay renovations in XIII should be lauded, they're absolutely what the series needed to stay relevant, but everything else is atrocious. And the excuse for an ending seemed like the writers just gave up trying to hold it all together and hoped people wouldn't care by that point.
