NFL player's mom-in-law dies while cop writes him a ticket!

it sucks. but it seems like the only reason this story is getting any attention at all is because hes in the nfl. he ran a red light and didnt stop until he got to the hospital. did he think the cop was just going to let him waltz in? the story doesnt say how far the light he ran is from the hospital, so for all we know he went on for another mile or two with a cop trying to pull him over. it sucks, it really does, i feel for him not being able to be with his family when she died, but if he had just waited at the light he would have been able to be there.

No, fuck that. The officer was not wrong to pull him over (how could he know the situation?) but he ignored the circumstances, escalated the situation and his actions were completely disproportionate to the offense (running a red light).

Read a more substantive account than this blurb and you'll see that this guy was simply on a power trip. He's not even allowed to pursue a vehicle unless its for a violent felony, his dashcam caught him telling another cop that he worded his report to make it look like he was afraid of being hit. People like this are the reason why police officers are not trusted by a lot of people today, and when he does shit like this he makes every other cop's job harder.

This guy should be fired today. He won't be, police always protect their own, and the lack of accountability further damages the public trust.

Seconded. The pursuit I have no problem with, but pulling and pointing his weapon without provocation, holding the guy despite the circumstances. It's bad enough for the chief to apologize, and praise the player.

I'm sure a video of the altercation will come out sooner or later. In my state at least, all cop cars are required to have video cameras on the dashboard recording at all times.

IB police defense force. I don't give a shit if cops have a tough job and have to put up with bullshit from stupid people. I did that for four years as a cashier for a tiny fraction of a cop's pay and didn't lose my cool once. Man up or get off the force.

And the obligatory "this cop is a douchebag" comment.

2 cops just been killed around here during a routine traffic stop, so I can't blame the cop for being too careful.
2 cops just been killed around here during a routine traffic stop, so I can't blame the cop for being too careful.
Read the story, he was being a dick just for the sake of being a dick. He took his time writing the ticket to delay them as much as he could, even with nurses there telling him what was going on.

Cops get killed all the time, so I guess they should just shoot up everybody they see because they never know who might shoot them first.

I read the story before it was posted here. I was referring to the cop drawing his gun.

No, cops usually do not get killed over routine traffic stop. The fact that one just occurred where 4 cops were killed recently means that cops around the country will be more careful.

In this thread, we compare being a cop to being a cashier to make ourselves feel better.

Lets see First he ran a red light.

Second they jumped out of the car ( they should be thankful they was not shot)

Ryan Moats explained that he waited until there was no traffic before proceeding through the red light. When Powell asked for proof of insurance, Moats grew more agitated and told the officer to go find it.

"My mother-in-law is dying! Right now! You're wasting my time!" Moats yelled. "I don't understand why you can't understand that."

As they argued, the officer got irritated.

if he got the proof of insurace out of the car LIKE a normal person maybe the cop would of let him go. BUT he had to shoot his mouth off.

LOL

The Moats family, who are black, said they can't help but think that race might have played a part in the white officer's behavior.

Yea play that RACE CARD.... They will now sue the city for millions of dollars

The ticket issued to Moats was dismissed

only reason why the ticket was dismissed cause he is BLACK

sorry his mother in law die but if he did not act like a DICK maybe he would not been held up that long ..

my grandmother died of Cancer back in 1994 and people called our family and told us to get up there NOW (she died around 20 mins after they called) cause she was dying... None of them broke any laws and ran any streetlights so why should they be able to

Sorry for their loss but still if he did not act like he did maybe none of this would happened ..... BUt in the end they will make the cop look like a bad guy and they will Give the family Millions of dollars

and what the hell does any of this mean anything to the story

Moats, a third-round draft choice of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005 out of Louisiana Tech, was cut by the Eagles in August and later signed with the Texans. In three seasons as a backup, he's rushed for 441 yards and scored four touchdowns.

He was a standout at Bishop Lynch High School, a private school in Dallas, rushing for more than 2,600 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior.

so he plays football he should be able to run red lights ????
Lets see First he ran a red light.
He came to a complete stop at the red light. With his hazards on. Then, when no one else was coming, he continued.
Second they jumped out of the car ( they should be thankful they was not shot)
In a hospital parking lot that they were going to with hazards on.

"My mother-in-law is dying! Right now! You're wasting my time!"

Shoot his mouth off? Are you a fucking fascist or what?

slidecage, you are going to look like a complete fool when this cop gets fired in the next few days.

Anyone, ANYONE in the same situation would run red lights. I would too. And if a cop pulled me over and I explained the situation I would expect him to show the smallest amount of compassion and understanding and let me go there.

I work with cops all day, and most of them find this behavior completely ridiculous, especially when he waved off a nurse who told him that the mother-in-law was coding.

If he were a cop in my community, I would want him fired.

Agreed on both. Also work with cops and most hate when someone does something stupid like that--both because it's ridiculous and because it gives cops a bad name and they have enough problems as is.

Look, he if could just cool down and said "Officer, I am sorry I ran a red light but I have a family member dying. Please write me a ticket as soon as possible" and the whole thing could be over in a minute. With his salary the ticket would mean nothing. I am sure he was stressed out but if he kept his cool there won't be a problem.

My fiance’s grandfather fell down the stairs, and was unconscious for a few hours before being rushed to the hospital. They said he had about a half hour or less left to live when I got the call that he fell, and I rushed to pick my fiance up from work, and made it to the hospital in about 25 minutes. I didn't blow any red lights, obeyed all the rules of the road, and he died about two minutes after we entered the room. I'm not going to endanger my life or anyone else’s because I am in a rush. The player was an idiot for not waiting 20 seconds for the light to change.

Cashiers get killed "in the line of duty" every year, and I've never seen a marble slab (perhaps with a statue of one, sitting, slack-jawed in front of the cigarettes) dedicated to them defending our freedom to buy cadbury eggs.

And while I agree with Ram's "if it weren't an NFL player it wouldn't get media play" argument, dafoomie makes some excellent points as well.

No. Just something I was reminded of when I saw a marble slab dedicated to those who died "in the line of duty" as I went to pay my parking ticket (d'oh!) yesterday.

When I saw the size of the rhino that took my fine from me, I wondered how many of those who died in the line of duty were cardiac arrest.

of course they will fire the cop cause he is WHITE and if they dont they know they will have a lawsuit on their hands

Did it ever say how far he drove being chased by the cops... Like they could not call 911 and tell them what was going on , NOpe guess it never crossed their minds huh....

like i said they are lucky they did not get their asses shot

Let it be known that the first person to bring race into this discussion is the person who wants to, evidently, leave it out of the conversation.

Really, now. When people pull the race card, you and people like you are the first to attack and berate the victim. Now we have another person who suffered at the hands of police, he and his family are black, and you begin to bitch about the race card before anyone else brings it up.

I bet you're one of those people who thinks that, as a society, we need to get "beyond race," and doesn't recognize the horribly damaging hypocrisy you bring to the table when you say things like that.

It could been a Drug deal gone bad or anything else.

fuck YOU, RACIST.

Really. "It could have been a drug deal." HE DROVE TO A fuckING HOSPITAL.

Nobody is saying (1) the police should not have followed him, and nobody (I think) is saying that he didn't violate the law by running a red light. What we are saying is that, by virtue of driving at a high speed to the hospital, with a family running inside upon *actually arriving at the hospital*, you use your best discretion as an officer to look around the fucking world in which you live and believe the legitimacy of this person's reasoning that it WAS A fuckING EMERGENCY.

If the car stopped at BP for drinks and snacks on the way to the hospital, we would talk. If they didn't go to the hospital, we could talk. But the dude did everything that we would have done when faced with an immediate emergency situation.

Let me put it this way: it's worth a speeding/moving violation fine to be able to see a family member for what is likely the last time in your life. If you want to applaud the policeman for following procedure to the letter of the law, I hope you get ticketed the next time you drive 36mph in a 35mph zone.

fucking hypocritical racist numbskulled asshole whitebread motherfuckin' understudy to the human race.

I'm usually the first to defend the police, but in this instance the officer was 100% in the wrong. Have you watched the video or listened to their conversation?

First of all, that officer is not allowed to pursue the vehicle unless it is suspected of a violent felony. They're in the hospital parking lot with nurses and other officers telling him that his mother in law is legitimately dying this very minute and this cop would have none of it. For running a red light!

Actions like these undermine the public trust in the police and reinforce the perception that many have in this country that the police will not help you and can not be trusted.

Pulling his gun out wasn't necessarily a big deal, but he had to do it as a result of losing control of the situation he created by exceeding his authority and escalated by abusing his police powers. This officer was completely unprofessional and completely wrong.

You do know that people take time to file civil complaints, right? That's why we have a statute of limitations, you dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb motherfucker.

I don't mind incredibly stupid people. I don't mind people with opinions. But you mix the two together, boy-o, and I get fir'd up. Goddammit you're a fuckin' idiot.

This! Officer is in the wrong, end of story. I think the quote the officer used when he was writing the ticket and another officer said, hey, the nurse just said his mom is dying, his response was "I'm almost done here." I don't care what the argument was at that point, the officer is in the wrong. Incredible that some of you actually justify the officer being correct in delaying any family member from being with their loved ones in that person's last moments is ludicrous. I don't give a shit what race or ethnicity they are, this is just completely WRONG!

"LAWL. Bet he won't go chase after the kickball next time! HAW HAW HAW!"
