So my buddy mentioned to me how he wanted to get a component cable for his psp so that he could play it on the big screen with a DualShock 3. This got me wondering about the NGP. Considering the fact it nearly rivals it big brother in terms of power, I think it could have dual use.

It has R2 and L2 buttons emulated on the back touchpad, plus the R3 and L3 analog stick buttons. Essentially it is a DualShock. Although I'd think it would be better to have actual buttons for the R2 and L2.

The only thing that I'm not sure about is overheating from prolonged use. It would also need to be implemented well. Such as a docking station that automatically sets it to the right mode. And in the docking station maybe a harddrive or even a Blu-Ray player so that it would be a complete entertainment system at home and on the go.

Thought it was an interesting idea and I wanted to share. Thoughts?

What is this discussion about? Are you saying that NGP will be a Portable PS3 and Home Console. If that is the case, then the PSP/Go would be a Portable PS2. It roughly is and does not overheat, but there is no telling if the NGP has overheating issues.

That's pretty much what I''m getting at. The idea here is that you can use your portable console for both home and on the go gaming. The PSP can pretty much do that now, but the NGP has enough power to be a current gen console. There needs to be more effort to seriously implement, making it much more seamless, before it could it be a serious alternative though.

The NGP is reported to not be as powerful as the PS3. That puts it leaps and bounds above the Wii and iPad games (I think), however I don't think it will be able to deliver a console experience. It may have great visuals but I love my surround sound system. The NGP will not deliver in terms of sound performance.

We also don't know what resolution they output will be.

I hope the PSN integration is equal to or greater than the PS3s. They haven't shown enough yet to make a proper opinion.

As long as there are hot exclusives for the NGP, I'll use it like a home console...same way I use my GO. Would be super rad if Falcom keeps going with the hot shit and trophies stay way the hell away from NGP.

The problem is that it may "appear" to be as powerful as the PS3, it's important to remember that it only needs to push pixels to a small screen.

As soon as you blow up the graphics, you lose the illusion.

In the press conference announcement the guy even said it's not as powerful as a ps3 and why would Sony want you to replace your home console with it. If you want to play at home use your ps3.

I think you're an idiot if you really think that a handheld is going to be as powerful as a console-based system that requires as much power to run as a fucking refrigerator.

I was thinking about that too, but isn't that dependent on the original game resolution? You can change PC game to run with less graphics, wouldn't that be the same when you switch to a bigger screen? I guess it would really be too early to tell. The specs on the NGP, from what I understand, are pretty powerful in general. Not just for a portable.

Since PS3 games can be ported to the NGP, I would expect it to be pretty powerful. I guess I did exaggerate by saying "nearly rivals". Easy to get too excited.

I don't know if Sony would want that. I just think it would be an interesting concept to have a single system. If you need head out, you can pause the game, take the NGP and continue your game on the go. Maybe in the future using a portable console as a home console could become standard. The PSP has these abilities and I would expect the NGP would continue with it.

I wouldn't expect it to be exactly the same. The PS3 has like 7 GPUs or something like that. I wouldn't be surprised if it could hold itself as a current gen console though. Also, the PS3 Phat doesn't use as much power as a fridge. The slim uses half that. Also, efficiency doesn't necessarily correlate with power.

Actually, I take back that it doesn't use as much. There's too broad a span of fridges.
