NHL 2K9 - fight and shoot with the wiimote

The last part of that gamespot vid shows off the Wii controls and it looks really basic. I hate how a lot of Wii controls for some games were so complicated (like DBZ Budokai), but glad they decided to make it not too crazy.

The best part of that video was the fighting feature they have in the game.

Mack... my bad about opening up another thread, I could've sworn I did a search for the thread and didn't find anything.

i've given up on sports games for the wii, ea's are trash, (only grandma gets to play madden, as the game is being played for her, yippi) and 2k does a better job but the graphics will probably look like gamecube first gen. like most do, the only good game i've played so far is mlb power pros, but it's because of the depth not gameplay

Oh, jebus, poke and crosschecking with the Wii mote? Shooting and fighting with the Wii mote? Hell freaking yes.

I haven't bought an NHL game since '04 but I'm definitely getting this. If it's 29.99 I'd get it on day 1, but that might be too much to hope for.
only grandma gets to play madden, as the game is being played for her, yippi
First, Pro Evolution Soccer.

Second, what?

It is kind of depressing that the best tennis game for the Wii is still Wii Sports Tennis. EA hasn't even attempted an NHL game for the Wii.

2k will do a better job with the hockey game, ea would take the goalie out of the game and call it all-play so that people wouldn't get hurt feelings if they didn't score
I once again ask you: what?
have you not seen any of the new EA sports games marketed for old people and little kids???? Have you not played a new Ea sports game from the ALL-PLAY lineup????? My point is that if you aren't 80 years old and confused or six years old and fragile then don't bother picking one of them up,

they make the games very easy and let the computer play for you so that you won't get discouraged, is this something that only i've picked up on, i doubt it since most sports games fans who have the wii are saying the same exact things,

i thought i was making my point clear

i thought i was making my point clear
From the IGN review of the new Madden (which, yes, has "All-Play" in its name):
In fact, if you play on All-Pro or All Madden, all those options turn off anyways, so you won't get assisted motion, you can't use All-Play controls, and you basically have to revert back to the hardcore controls from 07 and 08.
Apparently, "most sports games fans who have the wii" don't pay much attention to their own games.

...

"Hardcore" controls? What the fuck? Joey Shithead wants his adjective back, assholes.

The "All-Play" label is just a marketing label to bring the novice players into the fray. You have to admit, it's a great idea, especially with the onslaught of the casual market.

Not everyone is as "hardcore" as you are, Lowbgt. For a players newer to videogaming (young and old), standard Madden controls can be overwhelming. I played Madden out of college with a d-pad and 3 buttons. Now, when up against a more practiced Madden player, I'll just give up or not play at all. Videogames are supposed to be fun, pick-up-and play affairs, and most don't have time to develop a completely new 10 button skill set for every new game.

owe wait, i can turn it off, no shit, really, so what????

i'm supposed to be happy that instead of making the game better for fans of madden, all that the developers did was make a bunch of kiddie garbage that i turn off the minute i put the game in, THAT'S MY POINT MORON

They could have upgraded the graphics, gameplay, anything besides call your own shots which like i said, is one of the features that makes the game too damn easy, i won a game on all pro level by 97 points, yeah that's fun, but what did they do instead, make a bunch of crap that most people turn off right away,

so i ask you, whats the difference between madden '08 anbd '09 except for rosters, owe yeah, NOTHING FOR ME, but should i still send ea $50 more dollars anyway???? boy i love fanboys, your minds are so easy to control

i understand where you are coming from, but they don't have to make the game hardcore, let's be honest, i would love to know how many copies of madden sold for wii, most casual gamers could care less about the game, but i do think there is enough of a crowd of people who think the xbox 360 version is a little much that would take a scaled down version for the wii with the plus of having motion controls, what they are putting down is much more than a scaled down version of the next gen systems madden games, it's like going from high school back to first grade

Except, of course, for the new features. I'd quote IGN again saying something like, "everything that was in past games - whether it's gameplay or graphics or online play - has been improved," but it takes forever to load anything on this connection, and besides, I feel dirty quoting an IGN review more than once in one day.

Heh. You new to this Madden thing? There's a reason I haven't bought one since... well, ever, really.
boy i love fanboys, your minds are so easy to control
Yeah but it absolutely rapes your shielding so you'd better either use it in a safe situation (IE, lone BC straggler caught outside its base) or have plenty of Goons or something to guard it. Regardless, I find that I'm probably better off just having the two DT than being able to MC.

owe, there you go again quoting IGN, really, you take other peoples opinions instead of forming your own, i've played the game, hence i have my own opinions, just because a box and some reviewer that get's free swag says that it's new and improved it isn't always the case, don't believe everything you read bro, i'm done with this conversation now but i'll leave you with this,

free your mind,

think about it

Hey dumbass - there's a reason why Madden games sell millions of copies - you're not the only one who buys the game.

Maybe, just maybe, your opinion could be the minority? Just because YOU don't like it doesn't mean other people don't.

how many of the 7.4 million copies sold were for the wii einstein?????? No shit madden is great game for the 360 and ps3, i'm talking about the madden franchise on the wii only and if you think that the game sold even one million copies on the wii then i feel sorry for your mother because she raised one dumb son of a bitch

Madden 08 sold around 800k copies on the Wii. 75k of that was on week 1; this year's Madden started at 150k on week 1. The numbers come from vgchartz -- which we all know is the pinnacle of accurate reporting -- so feel free to interpret as you will, which I expect to be highly amusing.

And to divert back on topic -- NHL 2k9 looks like good fun on the Wii, though the 360 demo wasn't strong enough to convince me to get that version this year. Wii version is a definite rental, possible buy based on that.

Can we get back to the topic at hand: hockey?

I love NHL console games. I'm excited to have one for my Wii. I hope it doesn't suck, and that I can just play it with a Gamecube controller. I'll probably try the Wii Remote controls, though, out of curiosity.

thanks for the numbers and i will bet that the total number of copies for 09 on the wii will finish at less than 500k, but i digress,

I have a lot more confidence in 2Ksports to do a good job of making NHL 2K9 worthy of purchasing for the wii, they seem to have done a good job of balancing the wii's graphical capabilities with the motion control features as well from the vid's that i've seen, I'm hoping for a strong game, I just wish I had the chance to try it before I buy it, and yes I know I could rent it, but that seems like a waste of money to me

Anybody getting the game? It comes out today, I haven't played my Wii in awhile so it'll be good to fire it up again.

I'll post up a review when I get through enough of it.

IGN gave it 6.8, citing the horrible graphics and framerate. Yes, the framerate, when the reviewer compared it to looking at NHL 2K3.

The cursor passing is supposedly really fun though, at least when it's working.

NHL 09 on the 360 got 9.0 and Editor's Choice, in comparison.

Word on the street is this is a good game, control wise.
Graphics are indeed NHL2k3 or whatever on PS2, but no surpise there.

The biggest disappointment is no online, and which is why I'll hold off till this drops to $20 or lower. But as a sports game I am more interested in this then NHL 09 just for the controls alone.

The IGN review is in line with what I was supsecting (roughly a 7.0). For me, the controls are the draw, and since those are reportedly good, I'll definitely pick this up.

It seems it's definitely worth a rental. I'm very curious as to how bad it looks after reading that IGN review. They actually said that they compared it with 2k3 on the PS2. I own NHL 2k8 for the PS2, so I'll rent this sucker for the Wii and make the comparison myself.
It just bothers me that developers don't do the best graphics they can on the Wii. It's capable of so much more than people give it credit for - not PS3 quality stuff - but still.

I got a chance to play the Wii version and I'm liking it a lot. I mean I don't have much to compare it to on the Wii but I was pretty surprised at how well the controls work. Its more than just waggling and provides a pretty decent experience. One of the best part of the game is the fighting takes a little getting used to but you'll be pummeling in no time.

The graphics aren't the best you've seen but it never got in my way of enjoying the game.

I take every Wii review from IGN with a grain of salt. They aren't very objective reviewers and they have a general disdain for the Wii, IMO. 2k3 graphics - does that mean they were they any worse or better than 2001 or 2008? That comment made no sense to me.

I'm still exited about this game and am wondering if there is an NHL94 gameplay mode like in the 360 and PS3 versions. That feature alone might entice me to pick up this game.

Sorry to revive this thread but wondered if there are still people playing? Still give it a run when my friends come over, the Wii really takes it to another level.

The Zamboni mini-game is strangely intense.

Man, I'd forgotten all about this game. I don't even remember ever seeing it on a store shelf.

I still don't get the IGN pissing on the graphics for this as being like 2K3. I'm pretty sure I had NHL 2K3 for the PS2, and I don't remember it being shitty. In fact, I think it was a pretty good game. I could be wrong, maybe it was 2K5, but seriously, what's the difference between any of the games in this franchise?

If I come across this for $20, I'll probably pick this up if not just for the Wii controls, then or the classic genesis 3 button action. Although, I'm not sure how they do this with a 2-button Wii mote.

I haven't seen this for sale either! And to your point, most of the PS2 hockey games from at least 2K3 onward had really nice graphics - pretty ice effects and reasonably clear little men with sticks. I'd get this for $20 or less no questions asked.

Yeah I didn't get the thing about the graphics either. We all know that Wii graphics in general don't compare to PS3 or 360 but its good enough for me on the Wii. Considering this is the first and only hockey game for the Wii, they did a good job with the controls and I guess overall fun factor of it. At least worth a shot (pun intended).
