Hi Everyone – I’m excited to announce that the NHL is streaming its way onto the PS3! Beginning today, all PS3 users in the United States and Canada can download the new NHL GameCenter application, an exclusive offer for PS3 users making it the first and only gaming console to stream live hockey games in HD.

NHL GameCenter LIVE subscribers who enjoy free access to PlayStation Network and its variety of online content, can now stream live out-of-market regular season and select playoff game broadcasts in HD by downloading the NHL GameCenter application on the PS3 system. In addition to offering live hockey games, NHL GameCenter LIVE also allows subscribers to watch full-length and condensed replays of the current season games they missed (48 hours after they air, no blackouts) and relive NHL history with unlimited access to over 500 classic games from NHL Vault. Check out the demo to see how it works:

PS3 users that do not have a subscription to NHL GameCenter LIVE will still have access to a wide range of NHL content through the NHL GameCenter application. Fans will have access to features such as post-game highlights, team schedules, standings, player stats and profiles, and the full NHL scoreboard.

You can download the NHL application for $9.99 and access it under the “Video” icon on the XMB menu. However, if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber, you can download the NHL GameCenter application for free, continuing PlayStation’s goal to deliver exclusive opportunities only made available to PlayStation Plus members.

If you aren’t an NHL GameCenter LIVE subscriber, you can sign up by visiting www.ps3.com/nhl to get an account and ultimately link it to your PS3 using a registration code obtained through the app on your device. NHL GameCenter LIVE is priced at $169 (U.S.) for an annual subscription and includes the NHL Vault service. NHL Vault is also available separately for $4.95 (U.S.) a month.

We hope you enjoy watching all of the excitement of the NHL delivered via PlayStation Network!
I don't know why they're charging for the app when the MLB.tv app was free.

So you still need the $170 subscription to make this useful...any they are charging non-Plus members $10 for this? Lame.

Yeah, you need a sub to access the subscription service, like Netflix, MLB.tv, Hulu Plus, etc.

I think they are charging $9.99 for the app just so they can say it's free for PS+. It's free on the Roku box which was announced along with the PSN app.

Also, read the FAQ on the annual LIVE subscription and it blacks out any locally or nationally broadcast games. Basically, I get every game besides my favourite (local) team. Useless.

Depending on how much HD content they have this might be a good deal for people like me who already get NHL Center Ice (ever try finding a hockey game on TV in FL?) but whose market only gets 1 HD feed a night.

Wow, really? I was almost thinking about this since I don't have cable and get tired of trying to find crappy streams online, but every Pens (only team I care about) game is televised locally on FSN. Lame.

From their FAQ:

Why am I unable to watch a game in NHL GameCenter LIVE™?

A game may not be available to watch live or within 48 hours of completion if it meets any of the below criteria:
1. Your local team is playing and televising the game on a local over-the-air station and you are located within that station's signal.
2. Your local team is playing and televising the game on a local regional sports network and your cable or satellite system falls within the distribution for that local regional sports network (regardless of whether your cable or satellite system actually carries that regional sports network.)
3. Your local team is playing and there is no local television coverage of the game
4. The game is being televised nationally - In the U.S., this includes NBC, Versus, and the NHL Network. In Canada, this includes CBC, TSN, and the NHL Network.

I don't see the point of listing 1,2, and 3 individually since combined kinda mean 'every time your local team is playing'.

I had GameCenter Live last year - never again until they change the blackout rules. Basically, if the game is happening within 1,500 miles, it's blacked out.

Take notice the next time you see a GameCenter commercial. They always give examples of the Seattle guy that wants to view the Tampa Bay games. Or the Nashville guy that wants to watch the LA Kings. It's decent if you enjoy watching games on the other side of the country, and still it's a lot for the $... otherwise it's blackout city.

Blackout rules are one of the worst things the leagues have ever come up with and it hurts the appeal of these sports streaming apps.

As someone who moved from Vancouver to Dallas I've no issue with blackouts (thank god) so I won't comment on that. (I'm a Canucks fan so I can actually watch more games now that I live in Dallas vs Vancouver)

I will however say that the quality of the app itself is great. I tested it out tonight and the HD feeds looked great, had very few hiccups and the interface was fantastic. If you already have game center live, it's almost a no brainer to get this app so you can watch high quality feeds on your tv.
Try promo code BLACKOUT... as in any game you want to watch.
will i'm a stars fan and i live in Buffalo ,NY so i can see all the games but 1 because they play them in Buffalo so i can just watch that game on tv or go to it

and thanks for the PROMO CODE it worked take 50%off the price making it 70

Blackouts for these types of services have been around for 15 years. I don't know if there was ever a time when an "on demand" or complete package sports service didn't have local blackouts.

Still I'd be curious to know from anyone how the quality of this app is and how it compares to the MLB app. I bought the MLB app and it was great at first. The HD was pretty good quality and games played well, but the second half of the season was a mess. Games constantly stuttered or quit, HD was worse than cable and in general the app sucked. I never did figure out why. Any other streaming content like netflix or stuff over the PC worked just fine. There was just something wrong with the PS3 side of things. What I don't know was if it was a Sony/PS3 issue or a MLBTV issue for the PS3.

The other plus of the MLBTV package, was that blacked out games, could be watched an hour or 90 minutes after the completion. I watched a lot of local games the next day as I'm often busy. But I don't want to wait 2 days or more for hockey. It would be nice those to catch some out of market games.

It seems that it is possible so long as you do not log in at the same time. So if I can find sone one who cheers for an east coast team, I would likely be fine. The info is from an old post, so not sure if they have closed that loophole or not.

Hell, who am kidding I don't know if I could even justify paying $3 to watch Calgary play this year. I have been able to arch them three times on tv this year, and it has been bitterly disappointing all three times. :(

NHL Gamecenter returns as a free app this year with some flexible payment options:
The 2011-12 hockey season drops the puck on the ice, and the PS3, today! That’s right, the PS3 is still the only gaming console to stream live out-of-market hockey games in HD, and this season, in addition to enhanced streaming capabilities, users in the United States and Canada can now download the new NHL GameCenter application for free.

That means users who enjoy free access to PlayStation Network and do not have a subscription to NHL GameCenter LIVE can still have access to a wide range of NHL content through the NHL GameCenter application, including features such as post-game highlights, team schedules, standings, player stats and full NHL scoreboard.

Of course, if you are already an NHL GameCenter LIVE subscriber, you can also stream every 2011-12 regular season game in High Definition on the PS3 — local blackout restrictions do apply. Just like last season, NHL GameCenter LIVE allows subscribers to watch full-length and condensed replays of the current season games they missed (48 hours after they air, no blackouts) and relive NHL history with unlimited access to over 800 classic games from NHL Vault, in addition to all the live hockey games, of course. You can watch the demo here.

You can download the application now from the “Media & Apps” category in the PlayStation Store, and launch it from the TV/Video Services icon of the XMB.

And if you haven’t subscribed to NHL GameCenter LIVE yet, go to www.ps3.com/nhl to get an account and link it to your PS3 using a registration code obtained through the app on your console. The single payment price is $159 for the whole season or you can pay in 8 monthly payments of $19.95.

Get ready for an exciting hockey season of hits, goals and saves delivered via PlayStation Network!

Can I signup for just a month? Or do I have to pay $20 until the end of the season?

Anyone interested in giving a CAGGER their promo code from centre ice? I think centre ice people get game centre live for cheap.
