NHL playoffs looming

all the hate for detroit goaltending again...

i'd look to replace that aging team in front of legace first. look what happened with khabibulin...he won the cup with a good team in front of him, went to chicago where he had a bad team in front of him, and had a bad year. legace put up good numbers, his team didn't play hard enough to win. i'm calling out shanahan here...40 goals in the regular season...what did he do in the playoffs? detroit's skaters failed to step it up and coasted into the playoffs.

granted i saw a goal or two (that game 5 OT winner comes to mind) that were more the result of legace giving up before the play was over. i'd leave legace in place through the first half of next season, but rebuild the core of the team around datsyuk and zetterberg.
My only hope is that Theodore can pick up his gameplay for the next round. He looked pretty horrible in the first couple of games vs. Dallas, giving up some real soft goals. The verdict is still out (at least with me) on that trade with Montreal...
at first i said montreal got the better deal...aebischer proved that he was a started and had good numbers...the trade for an injured goalie was a shock.

but then theodore has been winning in the playoffs. montreal sticks with huet in net leaving their new goalie collecting dust. they lose 3 games straight and still leave aebischer on the bench...they deserve to lose.

my trade verdict: push (montreal should have the advantage, but blew it)

Buffalo dropped the fucking HAMMER on Philly tonight, 7-1. Way to go Sabres! They outplayed the Flyers in every aspect of the game tonight. They'll play Ottawa in the next round.

Also, Carolina beat Montreal to take that series, so they'll face New Jersey in round 2.

I'm glad the Sabres won, but I could have had game 7 tickets. Anyway, Ottawa next, and I hope it'll be a good series, as opposed to the first few games of the year, where the Sabres looked like Philly did tonight.

I wished better for Stevie Y to go out, but I'm glad he didn't burn out like some of the older vets did this year, like that sumbitch Brett Hull.

That may have been the weakest playoff game I've ever seen. I expected a full 60 minute battle from Philly, being in an elimination game. But they didn't even look like they were trying. Grier threading the needle between the two Flyers defenseman like he was Luke in Beggar's Canyon was just sad.

The better team won here, just like Edmonton.

Wow, at least the Detroit media doesn't overreact. I've forgotten about all this after living in Cleveland for 6 years:
In the coming weeks and months, the Red Wings must decide how to reshape themselves into a contender.
Um... last I checked, devouring the competition during the regular season made you a contender. Being a contender does not translate into winning the Stanley Cup. I'm pretty sure if they won the President's Trophy for the next 5 years, they would at least get to the Finals once.

What do they mean by "a contender"? A team that makes it all the way to the Finals?

I didn't bother reading the whole article, but I assume it means not getting knocked out of the first round of the playoffs. But if they had lost in the next round, the same article probably would have been written and "contender" would mean not getting knocked out of the second round of the playoffs.

fucking worst game ive ever seen in my life. We didnt try at all. I'm not worried. We'll be back next year, and in full force for another Philly Choke :)
Flames/Ducks tonight on OLN at 8PM EST. Let's go Ducks!!!
The Game is acutally at 9. But I have to say GO FLAMES GO!

Yeah, I was just about to edit that post. Thanks! Will the Ducks go with Bryzgalov in net again?

5 fighting majors in the first 6 games. Will the trend continue tonight?

You have to think that the Ducks go with Bryzgalov again given his stats. Although you never know, they could try to pull something. Also, he hasn't been tested a whole lot in the games that he played.

I expect it to be a physical game for sure though.

sad to see the flames lose, but anaheim outplayed them. i was skeptical last summer when scott niedermayer decided to leave new jersey for the ducks, but it looks like they built a similar team. can't wait for round 2 this weekend.

Well it sucks that the Flames lost but the Ducks pretty much played the Flames style better than the Flames did. I guess there is always next year.
Anyone else find it funny that it's 1, 2, 3, 4 in the east and 5, 6, 7, 8 in the west?
The road to the finals for the West must go through San Jose. Go Sharks!

round 2 is looking interesting. haven't been able to watch any games yet cause i've been shooting our final project at school, but we wrapped today. 4 goal game for lupul...looks like colorado will be the first to fall this round.

yeah...at least the avs scored this time...too little, too late at this point

So crazy! All 4 series are sweeps so far! Has that ever been recorded in history? That will be totally nuts if all 4 teams get swept this round. I'm kinda shocked that at the series scores in the Eastern playoffs.

niedermayer is lookin to prove he can win the cup without the devils. best dman playing the game today IMO.

the sabres advance to the eastern finals. edmonton is now canada's only hope...can they beat the sharks and the ducks for a shot at the cup?

Carolina beat New Jersey to advance to the finals.

Game 6 for Edmonton (at home) is Wednesday. I haven't been watching that series closely enough.

Carolina was serioulsy impressive this round. The Devils were looking invincible with 15 straight wins and Brodeur in net. The way it played out was almost more impressive than a sweep, showing how well can respond (especially with a rookie goaltender) after a dismal game four.
Edmonton moves on to the Western Conference Finals with a shut-out win over San Jose.
Four straight after losing the first two. Impressive.

Conference finals should be insane!

i'm taking anaheim in 5 games, buffalo in 6 games, and anaheim for the cup in another full 7 game series. gotta go with the solid play and veteran leadership of niedermayer.

edmonton is leading 3-0 in the third...is anaheim done?

where have the hockey fans gone?

EDIT: make that 4-0

holy schneike! 4-3...6 goal third period...is anyone watching this?

5-3 now thanks to pisani. i get cbc, but unfortunately they haven't been covering the sabres/hurricanes series...i was hoping to watch that one.

Edmonton wins again! This is amazing. I really underestimated this team. Anaheim came close to a come-from-behind win, though. I haven't watched a single game in this series. Too bad for me, I guess. I should watch tomorrow night, since it's an early game (7PM Central).

Dammit! There were 3 fights in this game? Now, I'm REALLY disappointed that I missed it!

you didn't miss much as far as that fight between laraque and fedoruk is concerned...it was pretty much broken up as soon as they dropped their gloves and circled each other. what you did miss though was an eight goal third period. just when you thought the ducks were gone they would make it look like they might actually win it. i was hoping for OT.

anyone else ever notice that mike commodore bears a striking resemblence to ogie oglethorpe during the playoffs?

*couldn't find a pic of commodore from this year's run, but he looks pretty much the same...
Canada has changed from being "Leafs nation" to "Oil Country" for the time being. :D
I can't believe Weight took that penalty in OT - although I've seen hits that were more 'boarding' than that one that didn't get called.

Great series - can't wait for thursday.

Beh, just not our time. Go Oilers now, my Peca jersey is still valid. Carolina fans don't deserve it.

Did anyone understand the call about the Grier hit. "He hit him like the Patriots hit .....Houston....um, the Texans, you know the football team. Um, Mike Grier's dad works for the Texans." I could almost understand if he said Bills or Panthers somewhere in there, but good lord. I hope we'll get the CBC feed here for the finals.

Buffalo played with guts, there's no denying it. Anyone else without their top 4 defensemen would have folded faster then a french soldier.

But, now,

GO OILERS!

I completely disagree with the "Carolina fans don't deserve it" bullshit. The players and coaches of the Hurricanes deserve it and so do the fans that cheered them on to the finals.
