NiGHTS Wii to be revealed in the next ONM?
I'm not one of those guys who tries to be cool by saying popular games suck (does NiGHTS even count as a popular game?). I just think people remember the game being better than it is (like the Simpsons arcade game). Go play it now and tell me you wouldn't rather be playing something else.
I used to love the Simpsons at the arcades. On top of that, I downloaded the simpsons arcade game in december and played it completely through with a friend. That game is awesome. I wish they still made games like that. What is wrong with it?

Don't forget X-men the arcade game! NIGHTCRAWLER!

My concern is more about sonic team. I mean Billy Hatcher, sonic heroes, and sonic rider are just bad.

I just played through it a month ago. It is one of my all-time favs, and most certainly my favorite Saturn game.

As for the simpsons game, it falls into the same cat as all other beat-em-ups; either you love em or hate, I err on the side of love. Though I will say this, once I beat Simpsons (a feat that takes no more than 2 hours max), I'm pretty much done with it for several years.

 And here I thought all this time NiGHTS must be an RPG with all the love it gets. The description here is so completely off-the-wall and different than what I imagined it was!

How can you love beat 'em ups and not have Guardian Heroes be your favorite Saturn game?
So...think Sega will get the same singers to do the music for NiGHTS that they did for the Sonic games?
God I hope not. The main reason I liked NiGHTS was its whimsically awesome music. NiGHTS needs dreamy, orchestral music, not angsty rock

Speaking of Nights and the saturn era, I have always wanted to play Panzer Dragoon Saga. For $100-200, I am curious as to how good it really is.

NiGHTS was one of my favorite Saturn games (Burning Rangers was Sonic Team's last Saturn release, AFAIK...) I loved the "trick" system and the ability to be scored on how well you tackled the course. I believe the on rails through 3D environment should stick and the motion sensors should be utilized as flight modifiers to move her/it through the environment. As for Panzer Dragoon Saga, few games are worth 100-200 dollars in my opinion - this is not one of the cases. Its a great game, granted, but I think the mystique comes from the rarity (although I never played it through all the way, got to the third disc, I believe). It was interesting raising the dragon to favor defense/attack and how that changed its phyiscal appearance. Good times. On a side note, I don't think I've had as much fun with games since the Saturn/PS/N64 era, sigh... how one's perspective changes.

Whether of not I'd like to play the Simpsons arcade game NOW is out of the question, and I have to say that this is the single worst thing you can say about the games of the past. You can honestly ruin the reputation of -any- game that is over a year old by bitching about its' graphics or about how it DIDN'T do something or other, without telling a lie. Asking someone to admit that an old game that they have honestly enjoyed and had fun with is somehow "bad" is making a bad argument, since the idolators are generally happy about the setting being nostalgic and the gameplay being new.

HINDSIGHT 20/20: I just realized that the above paragraph only makes sense to spoiled-by-innovation Nintendo crowd. I'm not being a fanboy here, I just honest-to-god can't point towards any other videogame IP that evolved so much and that were so consistent with their character/world use throughout. I guess it may be "unfair" to the competition that were not around since 1985, but since we're on topic of an old franchize getting a new game...

Speaking of which! NiGHTS: I have no idea what the hell it is, or why anyone is so excited. It looks "creepy" from the art that I've seen, so I can't really be all that excited about it. I must say that Da_Phatty's concern resonates withme wholesale.

Sadly, because I've never played GH. One of the very few SS games I never had the opportunity to find it.

I get what you were saying. NiGHTS, though, is one of those cases where the original game is still playable and fun. Apart from Guardian Heroes (which is the bomb), it's probably my favorite Saturn game and one that has aged well. I still play it, and not for the nostalgia factor.

It's a good, innovative design that used the Saturn's capabilities really well. It doesn't play or look like anything else, and it does what it does in an effective and fun manner. It's odd to go back to the Saturn for a game experience that still feels strange and new and unlike anything else, but there you go. It's limitations and downsides don't really affect the fun factor of the game at all.

Burning Rangers, for a counter-example, is a good design but it looks like a mess now. Ugly, boxy, choppy, and a great example of trying to do too much with the hardware and not succeeding.

DaPhatty's concern may not be warranted. I think NiGHTS is closer to Sonic and the Secret Rings than Sonic Adventure. NiGHTS never had instant death (from running into enemies or falling to your doom) as part of its design. The enemy was the clock. Even if you blew that, you could still recover -- you'd just get a really bad grade.

That's not to say that Sonic Team can't thoroughly fuck it up, but the things that make most modern Sonic a mess don't necessarily have to be an issue.

I have a Saturn, but never have played NiGHTS. Didn't want to go on ebay for the 3d controller.

Even if it is true, I don't expect much (good) coming from Sega these days.
It's the May issue.
Erm, maybe we're not seeing the same link? From http://kotaku.com/gaming/nights/nights-sequel-confirmed-247480.php:

Swedish videogame mag GameReactor has released a teaser image of their upcoming April issue—they're quite serious, mind you—featuring their "exklusivt!" reveal of Sega's sequel to the Saturn classic NiGHTS Into Dreams.

Not to mention "April 2007" in the upper left corner of the image.

Regardless, I don't think it's an April Fool's joke. Though I've never played the original, so my heart won't be broken if it is.

No, we weren't looking at the same link. But I didn't even notice that the cover said April 2007 issue. I saw the release date (April 10) and assumed it was the May issue since magazines usually release May issues in April. Sorry, my bad.

Also, the cover says NiGHTS and not NiGHTS 2. Could it actually not be a sequel?

They have April Fools in other countries. However, I read that GameReactor never does April Fools jokes, so I think this is real. It would be kick ass if this was on the PS3 instead of the Wii though (no offense).

Care to back your reasoning?
Care to back your reasoning?
I want to see NiGHTS in HD with amazing music and VERY GOOD visuals. The SIXAXIS is good enough to control this game (its no Wiimote, but its good enough). Plus, the PS3 needs some positive hype. I feel bad for PS3 owners.

This is where marketshare and dev costs finally matter! Maybe the cost of making a fancy HD Nights and the currently small marketshare just isnt worth it.

Hmm, here's an interesting tidbit - there's a line in the article that says "the eventual announcement of Shenmue 3."

I wonder what that's about?
Wait. Someone told me that this is a remake, not a sequel. I hope this is not true.
Everything to this point has indicated a "new" game, but I suppose that could be taken in many different ways. Essentially it just rules out a VC release.

Here's the Jeux-France translation:
Sega reveals finally the first images of NiGHTS Wii envisaged exclusively on Wii in the Portuguese magazine Maxi Comforted. This new opus of the series seems to preserve the same graphic style that the original play, one notes the graphics very coloured with many effects. Playable to 2 players, NiGHTS Wii was to propose an on-line mode, new characters, and new movements with Wiimote. The official advertisement of Sega should take place at the beginning of April, we will thus have right to more details on this play in a few days.

How many magazines have had this as their exclusive now?

Does someone have soemthing in English that says...

"Nights to be made for the Wii"?

If not then I don't care.

Yeah, foreign magazines never get exclusives.
Yeah, foreign magazines never get exclusives.
Also they wear funny hats.

I can't trust things that wear funny hats.
I could provide a really bad translation for the parts that look Spanish. Maybe about half a notch above a Babelfish translation.

But eh. Why waste my time doing that?
It's portuguese and I'm not that fluent.;)

We have motives to celebrate over, an unexpected announcement that could be the result of a final product, giving us new confidence in Sonic Team, whose esteem has been ruined by their recent products based on Sonic the Hedgehog, even taking merit from the Wii title, reviewed in this issue] however it opens the doors of our imaginations to the eventual announcement of Shenmue Three or perhaps the second chapter of Sega Saturn shooter Burning Rangers, right now everything seems to be positive

That is the last paragraph, no announcement of Shenmue three, just editors hoping for it..

as for myself...

god..please..no..just don't...let..this happen.
Yeah, foreign magazines never get exclusives.
Exactly, and they are always wrong.
It's portuguese and I'm not that fluent.;)
Well I said "looks" spanish, cuz a lot of it looks the same, but it has that little c with the "tail" on it. But I could read bits and pieces here and there and probably come out with something as close as Babelfish could. :)

Other notable parts..

Are you contemplating taking this experience inspired by Nights to other platforms?

For the moment, this new Nights is exclusive to the Wii.

What can we expect in terms of game modes?

there will be a mode for one player, a mode for two players, and certain special online functions.

We are devoted fans of this sympathetic character, will you be able to keep the same attraction with the public from all these years?

I hope more than anything that NiGHTS FANS will love this title as much as the original, I am confident that the new concepts I plan to introduce, will also attract a new base of players who are not familiar with the character and its world.

Man of the moment: takeshi iizuka

FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT PLAYED THIS WORK OF ART OF THE 32 BIT DAYS, THIS PROGRAMMER HAS ALSO BEEN KNOWN FOR HIS MOST RECENT WORKS, NAMELY SONIC HEROES, HE WAS THE DIRECTOR OF THAT TITLE.

[oh god..please..no]
Exactly, and they are always wrong.
Yeah. Since a foreign magazine is reporting on this, then it practically confirms NiGHTS will never be made.
Everything to this point has indicated a "new" game, but I suppose that could be taken in many different ways.
Looking at the screen shots, everything appears to be in the first level of NiGHTS and the second boss. There was a side bar that said something about including content from Christmas NiGHTS. I took that to be that this was a remake of the original plus the Christmas bonus.

Having owned both of those, I'd still buy this in a heartbeat. Then again, there's a part of me that still wants to think Sega can make a good game, despite mounds of contrary evidence provided over the last 4 years.

I don't think it's a remake. VERY excited about this game.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/778/778242p1.html

UK, April 4, 2007 - Now that NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams has finally been confirmed, more info has started dribble from SEGA's lips, including the rather exciting news that the game uses the Wii's Forecast Channel to change in-game scenery according to real-world seasons.

Courtesy of SEGA Europe's official website, several new gameplay details have also been revealed. Firstly, NiGHTS Wii features three collectible 'Persona' masks accessible over its seven environments, enabling players to morph into different forms. For instance, the Dragon mask turns NiGHTS into a - yes - dragon, making him resistant to wind. There's a Dolphin mask granting the ability to swim and a Rocket mask for movement at high speed.

Alongside that Forecast Channel integration, NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams is set to enable friends to exchange unspecified items with one another using Wii Connect 24.
