Nine Free HDDVD's with Purchase of Player at Best Buy

Lol...let the war being.

I don't care what anyone says, but these killer sales MUST be doing something for HD DVD sales...

Great deal though. Even if its going to be a upconverter for reg dvds.

Picked mine up today. I figure even if blu ray has won, it will at least be another year until anything really shapes up. Until then I'll enjoy my cheap upconversion dvd player + 9 free flicks.

I pciked up Face/Off two disc set and Blade Runner 5 disc set as my two "freebies".

And yes, they look beautiful.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I did try to pick up the Matrix box set to see if the same glitch as before would work; it didn't.

Not much man... HD is not setting itself up to sell movies, just players which can only go so far. I know i have a Blu icon in my sig but Im neutral and previously HDDVD only.

Software sales down:

And less shelf space:
Part of Blu-ray's strategy is a "top down" approach that starts with studios and retailers and pushes downwards to consumers. It seems to be working, as several retailers are falling in line and shifting shelf space away from HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray. The linked article describes how buyers for several retail chains are shifting orders and shelf space away from the embattled HD DVD format. It's grim news, but none of them is giving up on the format entirely (at least not yet). Also, online shops that enjoy more "long tail" sales (Amazon, DVD Empire) haven't made big changes in product mix, and neither has HD giant Best Buy (no mention ofrumor faveTarget). Still, talk along the lines of "... special order HD DVD titles for customers if needed" sounds like a death rattle to us.
Good deal for the player though, I would get another one if I had more Tvs :whistle2:D

Faceoff is an excellent choice. Enjoy it.

huge sales like these, in which its obvious not very much money is being made, often indicate something else....

FIRESALE!

Is the Toshiba HD-A3 $149 good?

or should I buy a more expensive one.

I only plan on watching very few hd dvd's on it since I will probably watch regular dvd's on it

The next one up is $199, and the only difference that I could see is that it does 1080p where the A3 does 1080i. I'm expecting Blu Ray to win the war, so I didn't see a point in spending $50 now when I'm going to be spending more to buy a BR player in the future, which will have the 1080p.

To me, this purchase was really just about an upconversion player for my old dvds. The HD is more of a bonus.
just wondering, does the 360 HD-DVD addon apply to this offer?
Toshiba makes the 360 HD-DVD Player. I'm nearly positive it would be applicable here.

And no, honzoh.
Damn. Best Buy really wants to get rid of their HD-DVD stock. Can't say I blame them.
Can we PLEASE keep the format war nonsense out of deal threads? This isnt SD.

This isnt a "fire sale" or "close out". Toshiba dropped the price as part of a strategy to counter the WB move. Be it good or bad or successful doesnt matter. Also this BB promo was more than likely made months ago.

Best Buy had 10 free blu-rays with a player last week, does that mean they're trying to get rid of blu-ray too?

For anyone considering this deal, keep in mind you can pick pre-orders as your two free. Which includes American Gangster and Bee Movie.

I wish we could just get all the movies there all at once including the 5 free in the mail, so many to choose from

That's a lie. The deal is over but whatever. Don't lie.

The free instore was ANY BR disc $34.99 and under excluding TV seasons. The ad was very clear and if the person at BB screwed you over by saying it was AGangster & Bee Movie, thats your fault for not knowing the sales. I work their PT and know the promotions and preorders are NEVER part of them. Who does preorders in store for dvds anyway?

I don't know how to say it politely so I'll just say it: :whistle2:#. His first sentence has nothing to do with his second. American Gangster (Universal) and Bee Movie (DreamWorks) are HD-DVD exclusive movies which is why he mentioned them in the same sentence as the HD-DVD deal going on. Not only that, he specifically said "this deal" and since we're in a thread about "Nine Free HDDVD's with Purchase of Player at Best Buy" it doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to figure out what he was talking about. Well, maybe it does.

edited for lack of banning.

I understand and appreciate the comment about the format war and agreed that CAG is probably not the best place to discuss or rather more specifically this DVD, HD-DVD or Bluray deals forum. With that said, it must really be hard to mention either formats without somewhat mentioning the format war in which HD-DVD is seemingly losing. It is the question looming around on everyone who purchase the HD-DVD. But it ain't over till its over...

Anyway, wow Face Off and Blade Runner...nice two choices the best part is the free part!

Even though it seems like a good deal on the surface, I would rather invest $150 in the winning format than throw it away on a dying format. Consider the following:

9 movies (HD-DVD versions) = $0
HD-DVD player = $150
Blu-Ray or Dual format Player (eventually) = $300/$500

vs.

9 movies (delayed Blu-ray versions) = $150
Blu-Ray player = $300

So where's the deal? In the first scenario, I'll have to buy a second player when HD-DVD dies in order to buy and play new releases, negating the perceived savings in the first place.

...Or you can get a PS3 which does the upconversion of your DVD's, very well, I may add and get the winning format with a game system to boot! :p

I think certain people are getting a little touchy about this subject. Yeah, I agree that any "war" talk should be kept to a minimum, especially in topics and boards that have little to do with them. But I also agree with the poster who said it is kind of hard to NOT mention the poor shape HD-DVD in. This deal does not exist in a vacuum. There is a reason why prices are dropping. HD-DVD is on life support.

Let me explain:

I'd only decided to finally purchase a new player once Warner's decision was announced. I decided blu ray won the war and that was that. I've been looking into getting a PS3 for this reason.

However, I view things a bit more complicated than most I assume.

Pros of PS3:
Upconverts (I will not be rebuying my 600+ dvd collection in hi-def)
Plays winning format

That's really the only perk of the system. Sure you can mod it too, but that's expensive and the biggest drive I've found is a 120gig for around $200. Too much to spend imo. Let's face it, as of this posting, there are almost NO games worth picking up on the ps3 that you can't get on the 360.

So really, it came down to just needing an upconverting dvd player. Why spend $430 on a 60gig PS3 (the best one) when I can spend $150 on a dying format to do the same thing? In a year or so, I'll buy a PS3 once the price drops significantly. But as for now, I'm perfectly happy with my $150 purchase and 9 free flicks.

That and I'm a Face/Off fanatic:)

Ugh, I hate this thread so much.

We are still in the wake of Warner's decision. I can't remember but were there this many retards running around after Paramount's decision to go exclusive declaring Blu-Ray to be dead?

The facts are this.

Universal/Paramount are still on board. That's two very big studios, one that is the top releaser of HDM (Universal) and the other one with a blockbuster year lined up (Paramount). Universal has been with HD-DVD through thick and thin and Paramount is contractually locked in for at least 12 more months.

Toshiba is pricing players more aggressively thanks to Warner leaving.

Until all major studios leave HD-DVD (which will be awhile since Universal is basically attached at the hip) there is no "winning format" and even if HD-DVD "dies" your player/disc will continue to work.

Ok...I agree on most all points, to add:

As it stands there are only two (large) studios supporting the HD-DVD Format. But regardless these are the last two (Big Studios) holdouts are huge! So this doesn't really mean HD-DVD is dead. Like Beta vs VHS it came down to the porno industry. Which is happy using the DVD format right now. Maybe it will impact this war as well. The internet sort of adds a curve to this battle plan however, but it is not going to be surprising if the porno industry picks the HD-DVD format and all these Blu-Ray companies reverses their decisions and chooses to join the HD-DVD consortium. Remember the DVD consortium has not sanctioned BLu-Ray as a format (yet) so even though we may be in the 7th inning stretch of this three year war, it ain't over until it is over. I don't think HD-DVD is on life support. HD-DVD is aggressively campaigning to make up for its losses. Bottom line: Consumers will decide which will really win. BTW, everyone here at CAG may actually exempt from the group which will decide which format to support. We are usually better informed than your average/fair weather electronics buyer which will one day take the leap to high definition players. With a recession looming...who knows? Maybe pricing will determine the choice. I would expect to see cheaper HD-DVD movies in the coming months, cheaper than Bluray to try to convince the average joes out there.

To bring this back to topic. There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of this deal. $150 bux and 9 movies to jumpstart you into the world of HD? That's a deal that will make many on the fence leap to HD-DVD's. Costco, during the holidays had a HD-DVD player for less than $100! If that maintains, and the sales of the players topple Blu-Rays, the studios are bound to notice and may want to rethink their current strategy. Maybe?

Posts were removed...if you want to post here to talk abou the ongoing deal please do so, otherwise go to the format war thread in the general gaming section.

1) The difference between a studio leaving Blu-ray and a studio leaving HD-DVD is that Blu-ray already had a large support foundation. HD-DVD's has been crumbling, and Warner leaving isn't going to help.

2) I haven't paid close attention in a couple of weeks, but when Warner announced their move, there were already rumblings that Paramount was trying to find a way out of their HD-DVD exclusivity deal.

3) The pornography industry cannot affect this as much as it did VHS/BM, simply because the market for packaged media is not as strong as it was in the '80s. Obviously, the internet has changed the way that pornography is bought and sold.

I just got a best buy rewards coupon for 20% off hd and bluray players on the 25-28 of January would I be able to get the this promo with the discount of the coupon?

Thanks.

Ooh that would be nice...though most coupons have that "Not valid in combination with any other offer" copout, so its basically YMMV on that, if it comes up automatically when they scan, youre golden, if they have to manually override, just hope you get someone cool to do it.

I got my blu ray player about 2 or 3 weeks ago when they had 5 free in store movies and 5 by mail. The best buy I went to wouldn't let me use a 20% coupon I had along with the 5 free movies. So the next day I went to another best buy for a price adjustment with the coupon and the lady did it for me.

I was able to use the coupon and the total was $130.25 and the two free movies I picked were PAN'S LABYRINTH and blane runner.
