Nintendo 3DS - General Discussion Thread

So I tried out the 3DS with SF4 at the Capcom event last night. Like most reviewers said, you have to hit the 'sweet spot' or else the 3D effect will look really bad. That means you have to stay dead center to the screen at all time. If you move a bit it is hard to get back to the 'sweet spot.' Also I am not sure the 3D stuff is something I am going to look for several hours of gaming. The dpad however seems too low so it might take so getting used to. Overall I am impress by the same and will likely get one.
Even funnier since they said they're releasing quality titles. Steel Diver is a friggin' tech demo. It SHOULD be $1.
And it would be, but Nintendo says that's bad. They'd rather make you pay $40 for a tech demo and be unhappy with the purchase. Well, we can always look forward to it hitting the bargain bins... still at well more then a $1.

Steel Diver has moved far down my interest list. It's one of those games that I may end up trying down the road for the 3D effects, unless it gets absolutely abysmal ratings.

Seems like a few big negatives and yet you still plan on buying one? :roll:

I'll wait for the second generation. Hopefully by then they'll have improved on the 3D, have bigger screens, and a better selection of games.

So, has there been any word or confirmation as to whether downloadable DSi games will be available for the 3DS? I really wanna play Risky's Revenge but no way am I buying a DSi.
anyone have a list of 3DS launch titles yet
The following is a list of twelve titles that are rumored to be coming out with the system between March 27 and the beginning of June , and believe me, the list is impressive.

I love fighters, but they don’t seem to do so well on handheld systems. But seeing Street Fighter IV 3D as one of their launch titles gives me hope. The gaming experience should be awesome and even if you turn off the 3D effects, you’re still left with a great fighter you can play on the go with the world. Also don’t forget about Dead or Alive! It’s coming back too.

Nintendogs + Cats also looks like a great casual title and the 3D effects actually might make it a lot more fun than its DS predecessor. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries also looks like another great multiplayer game that will play nicely thanks to the fact that the 3DS will only use one friend code for all its games. Sweet.

The other launch titles look solid as well and they offer great variety for different gamers. For the sports fans, there is Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D and Madden NFL. For the speed enthusiasts, there is Asphalt 3D and Ridge Racer 3D. The 3DS also will get some unique titles including Steeldiver, a game that has you manning submarine missions, and Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D that has you battling with dinosaurs in an RPG-like setting. LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars also gives us some family-friendly Lego action in 3D. Finally, the Pilotwings franchise gets a modern facelift with Pilotwings Resort.

Nintendo also announced that there should be over thirty titles before E3 in June. Titles that are currently in the works include The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Star Fox 64 3D, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and new installments of Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Paper Mario. Some third-party titles also coming out soon for the system include Super Monkey Ball 3D, Thord: God of Thunder, Bust-A-Move Universe, Rayman 3D, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon.

Say hallo to eco-cases, round 2
:cold::cold::cold:

Do these cases save us at least an OZ or so when shipping out?
the article says 8 grams. I wonder what those savings end up being for the company in the name of a green movement. 8 grams times 10's of millions of units probably adds up to something, cant imagine it would be that substantial though.
Boooooooooo :bomb:

This reminds me to place an order for the last of my GBA cases....
Whoa, those suckers are really missing a lot of plastic. At least they don't have a scratchable disc on the other side... I actually have a punctured Wii game case...never seen that happen before, went straight through.

And where are you getting GBA cases from? I probably need about 10 more than I have...well, actually I was using GB/GBC cases because GBA games fit in them too, and I finally ran out. I've got most of my lose GBA games in DS boxes at least.
Neat I guess.... Dont poke a hole through the cover insert.
I imagine that would be pretty challenging to do, what with the clear plastic cover on the outside of the case anyway.
Neat I guess.... Dont poke a hole through the cover insert.
Ugh, that's gonna make it even more difficult to remove sticker goo from the packages. I have a lot of PS2 cases that have divets where the "manual holder" clips have a hole from trying to scrape off the goo.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't even think of that, that it'll make getting goo off even harder.

For whatever reason, I run across goo problems most on Xbox games...and manufacturing weirdness too, with weird distortions and stuff on the discs quite often. I NEVER see that on PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii games... I'm assuming they're cutting some corners :whistle2:/

I had to trade in some discs off Lost Odyssey because of that, and the Gamestop guy was hassling me about it, all "it'll read fine!" and I do see the same issue on a LOT of discs, but this didn't read fine, at least on mine. Wow did I get off topic there LOL

Is that in reference to the weirdly pressed games? In my case I never buy used, they're coming out of the box looking weird and distorted.

I'm seeing mixed news about the possibility of a virtual console of gameboy/color games. Is all of that wishful thinking or has it been pseudo confirmed? I don't want another DSI fiasco
I'm seeing mixed news about the possibility of a virtual console of gameboy/color games. Is all of that wishful thinking or has it been pseudo confirmed? I don't want another DSI fiasco
Nintendo never officially confirmed selling Gameboy games on the DSi as far as I know. It was just wishful thinking by media and commenters. A Virtual Console for Gameboy games has been announced by Nintendo.

CNET

Kotaku

It is known to at least have original and Gameboy Color games, no confirmation on the possibility of Advance games though. Consider that nothing but rumor.

However, the only thing to take note of is that the online store to download games won't be available until sometime in May via a software update, so it won't be there at launch.

I HATE Nintendo's worst-ever DRM, but dang would I like to finally play the Gameboy Kid Icarus game...zero interest in the pseudo-sequel on the 3DS though.
Wow it's like I'm really reading news and opinions from six weeks ago!
Months, you meant to say six months ago.

Steel Diver looks like fun. Haters gonna hate.

Pilotwings looks fun as well. Attention Nintendo: 3DS-ify the N64 version. Don't you dare touch the music.

I hope I'm wrong, but Pilotwings looks like they just took out the Yoohoo Island flyover part from Wii Sports Resort (though that was arguably the best part, def. the part I spent the most time with)... and called it a day. I really hope there's a lot more to the game.

They are using the Wuhu Resort Island for at least part of the game. Nitnendo is using it and Mii Characaters as a brand for these types of games.

The demo showed Rocket Belt as one of the activities and the logo shows hang gliding, so its not just the plane, but they very well could have started with the Wii Sports Restort engine.

NINTENDO REVEALS LAUNCH-DAY LINEUP OF 18 NINTENDO 3DS GAMES

With More Than 30 Games Total Launching by Early June, There's Something for Everyone

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 22, 2011 – On day one, new Nintendo 3DS™ owners will have plenty of video games to keep them busy. Nintendo and its third-party publishing partners have made sure that people who buy a system on March 27 will be able to choose from a variety of experiences that leverage the system's new features. A steady and diverse stream of games of all kinds will keep the fun going, with more than 30 Nintendo 3DS games total launching before the E3 Expo in early June.

"Seeing 3D visuals without the need for special glasses is just one aspect of Nintendo 3DS," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "The real test of any system is whether the games and applications draw you in and keep you engaged. Through the launch window and beyond, Nintendo 3DS delivers."

On March 27, new Nintendo 3DS owners will be able to choose from the following Nintendo-published games, each available at a suggested retail price of $39.99:

* Pilotwings Resort™, an aerial adventure featuring airplanes, hang gliders and rocket belts. Players soar above tropical Wuhu Island in 3D as they complete missions or snap pictures.
* Steel Diver™, a submarine game that involves strategy and combat. The 3D visuals give players the sensation that they are looking into a miniature aquarium as they control the sub's speed, depth and pitch, and fire torpedoes.
* nintendogs™ + cats, a game that lets players interact with realistic puppies – and kittens – in a variety of fun ways. There are three versions of the software, each with different starting breeds: French bulldog, toy poodle and golden retriever. But in each version players can unlock and enjoy more than 20 different breeds.

Other Nintendo 3DS games in the works for 2011 from Nintendo include The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™ 3D, Star Fox 64™ 3D, Kid Icarus™: Uprising and new installments in the Mario Kart™ series.

Third-party publishers also have a strong slate of games ready to go on March 27. These include:

* Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition from CAPCOM
* The Sims™ 3 from EA
* Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS
* Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D from Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
* LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™
* RIDGE RACER® 3D from NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc.
* Super Monkey Ball™ 3D from SEGA
* BUST-A-MOVE UNIVERSE™ from Square-Enix, Inc.
* SAMURAI WARRIORS®: Chronicles from TECMO KOEI AMERICA Corp.
* Asphalt™ 3D from UBISOFT
* Combat of Giants™: Dinosaurs 3D from UBISOFT
* Rayman® 3D from UBISOFT
* Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon® Shadow Wars from UBISOFT

Nintendo 3DS also comes pre-loaded with a variety of fun games, applications and features, such as the Nintendo 3DS camera, which can be used to take photos in 2D and 3D as well as be used in other games and applications. For instance, the built-in Face Raiders™ game asks users to shoot at funny depictions of their own photographed faces, while the Mii Maker™ application lets gamers use the camera to take a picture of a person and have an automatic Mii™ character created. The system also comes with six AR Cards, which, when viewed through the outer cameras, bring to life fun and interesting animations and images. For example, when used with nintendogs + cats, users might see their puppies or kittens sitting on their coffee tables or in the palms of their hands. With Nintendo 3DS Sound, users can enjoy sound-manipulation tools or rock out with their Nintendo 3DS system while listening to their MP3 or AAC music files.

Nintendo 3DS is also able to play nearly every game in the massive Nintendo DS library, except those that require use of a secondary Game Boy™ Advance slot.

I agree, they both do look pretty entertaining but I question their value at $39.99. Neither one strikes me as a particularly robust experience but then again the entire launch lineup seems to be full of games with shallow gameplay experiences.

I guess that's just hardware launch lineups in general but its a tough switch when you go from all the great DS games that have come out in the last few years to games that offer such a short or shallow experience.

I have to agree with RedvsBlue. Those games looks entertaining, but also like they ought to be free pack-in games, not $40 a pop. Of course who knows for sure since none of us have played them, but the gameplay on display doesn't look like a $40 game, especially Pilotwings Resort. I mean that's one small part of Wii Sports Resort. If Wii Sports Resort consisted solely of that, it sure would have felt like a rip off, and $40 isn't far from $50.

Once, just once I'd love to get a decent RPG for a hardware launch. Something you can really sink your teeth into for more than a "hey check this out" kind of game.
Once, just once I'd love to get a decent RPG for a hardware launch.
You're in luck.

Anyways, are there any plans for the Nintendo World Store? I vaguely remember there being plenty of Wiis (but not enough games and peripherals) at NWS for launch and I'm thinking it might be worth it to just bite the bullet and go to get a system and then bounce back.
Can I easily cancel a preorder from a gamestop store?
Yep, but your deposit becomes credit toward future Gamestop sales.

Man, I rushed to pre-order one of these, but the launch lineup just looks like crap. I don't want any of these games.

All those 3rd party games seem like games that will be much less impressive on a handheld. I like a handheld for games that are a quick diversion if I have a few minutes to kill, or for slower paced RPGs I wouldn't sit in my house and play but would if I am stuck on a plane. I DON'T use them for castrated versions of console games.

Yeah. Super weak launch as usual.

Steel Diver and maybe SSFIV for me.

Pilotwings looks bland to me. Probably the aesthetic. I'm hoping impressions are good.
I agree, they both do look pretty entertaining but I question their value at $39.99.
Fair enough, but I'm hoping for some kind of launch sale from a retailer that would help mitigate the price.

And once again, third parties had every chance to kick off the launch with that sort of thing, because Nintendo has almost never done so, and what do they do? Pro Super Monkey Ass 3D.
You're in luck.
Damn you, I got really excited until I got to the last paragraph.

This info doesn’t come from the most reliable source — a 15-year-old kid who says a manager at UK retailer GAME allowed him to spend a few hours with a retail unit— but the details match other reports we’ve heard.

I know no one here really cares about most of the titles, or doesn't trust Famitsu, or whatever else excuse you'll throw out, but still:
http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=151010

nintendogs + cats (3DS) – 10/9/9/10
Super Monkey Ball 3D (3DS) – 9/8/8/7
Ridge Racer 3D (3DS) – 8/8/7/9
Samurai Warriors: Chronicles (3DS) – 9/9/8/8
Super Street Fighter IV 3D (3DS) – 9/8/8/9
PES 2011 3D (3DS) – 8/8/8/8
Professor Layton and the Mask or Miracle (3DS) – 8/8/8/8
That's pretty impressive for launch titles.
SSFIV has always been my launch title of choice, so I'll pick that up and be satisfied for a while.
I only want it play and test the online with people honestly.

I also want the Puzzle Bobble title, even though it's a super rehash.
But I can't stop buying Puzzle Bobble games. :oops:

Williams Pinball is coming too. Whee!
