What are Recertified products?
Products described as “Recertified” are products which have been retested to ensure compliance with original manufacturer specifications in function and for purposes related to warranty.
“Recertified” products may include a limited manufacturer warranty – see the items product page on our website for details

Recertified products may be any of the following:

A product that has never been used, where the outside factory seal has been broken. This can be due to a cancelled order for example.

A product returned to the original manufacturers that were used in field tests, sales displays or demonstrations.

A product that have been returned for warranty service, which have been brought to manufacturer specifications.

A product that have been returned for reasons other than defect. These items are sent to the manufacturer for inspection and testing. The passing products are then repackaged as recertified.

A product where the box was damaged in shipment and is then returned to the manufacturer.
What does recertified mean in regards to the condition of the DS? Is there a chance the screen may be scratched?
Yes. There were several reviews posted on-line a while back from people that bought these (before they were disclosing they were recertified by the way) and a lot of them complained about screen and case scratches, dents and dings and other cosmetic issues. Not worth risking getting a damaged system to save roughly $40 and new DS Lites will probably drop again once the 3DS is formally announced in September.

Thanks for the help, guys. I guess I will pass on this.

walmart.com is still selling DS and DSI at list prices (ie, the DS at $129 and DSi at $169) but you also get your choice of one free game and one free accessory kit....and the free game selection is actually pretty good, not crap shovelware, but things like the latest pokemons, mairo kart, and scribblenauts.

That is a big NO for me.

Can't believe the DS Lite hasn't dropped to $99 already but it surely can't be long now. This would be ok though if you were dying for one of the discontinued colors.

Woo those have some scary reviews. At this price is it really worth buying a filthy messed up DSL? Better off buying a good condition used one

I think that this speculation is wholly dependent on pricing of 3DS, which nobody knows as of yet....if Nintendo goes high (say $170 or higher), they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they drop the DS Lite in the current economic climate and against things like a possible $20 price cut in with the PSP and a new ipod touch coming out soon. If they go higher price, I would see them dropping the DSi before the DS lite, because it doesn't seem like any developers are really writing DSi specific games (and why would they where there are a kergillion DSes in the market and a relatively small number of DSi out there) and the 3DS seems to do everything the DSi does plus all the 3D stuff. Of course, nintendo may drop the price on the DSi to DS lite levels and do away with the DS lite, but that would be a pretty big price drop on the DSi (which is currently still at its launch price) and I would imagine the DSi is a little bit more expensive to build than the DS lite.

But either way, the odds are the 3DS won't be here until March or April of 2011....so that's a quite a while to be sitting on the fence. (retailers fiscal year Q2 2011 starts in May 2011)

Actually, you're correct that the DS Lite will likely be cleared out, possibly for $99, but the 3DS will actually replace the DSiXL at the top of the range with the DSi and DSi XL continuing, but possiblly at a slightly reduced MSRP as they are in Japan and Europe already (they dropped roughly US $20 each).

Hi guys, I just received my recertified black ds and I have to say I'm surprised, the system is in perfect condition, it has little signs of use, the screens are scratch free, the only thing I notice is that the game slots are dusty but I just clean them out with a q-tip, I was prepared to send it back but I think I'm gonna keep it

I forget the exact numbers, but Mario 64 was $25, the crappy kit was about $12, which makes the DSi $133. There was a better kit that was unavailable during my purchase that may be valued higher. I had also contemplated getting the $189 bundle with 2 games thinking that Pokemon may fetch more back. But we didn't need another DS in the house!

And yes, according to what I have read (either the packing slip or on walmart.com), you can return certain items.
