It is one of my favorite RPGs ever. The trailers and video don't do the gameplay/story justice, but it must be said that you should play through several hours (maybe 8?) before things get REALLY good. It starts slow for good reason.

I disagree with everyone calling it metroidvania. It's a lot more linear than anything I would ever consider metroidvania. It's like if you called Mario World metroidvania because you have to go back sometimes to get extra paths or switches. If you exclude the "towns," and unnecessary areas, there's almost no backtracking.

However, it's more fun than I expected. The pinball mechanic isn't as hard as a normal pinball game would be, and is very forgiving. I paid $4 for the PS4 version at Gamestop and it was an absolute steal. At $10, it's still worth it.

It's totally fine and I'm still having a blast with the game, but it's def not perfect. 60 fps most of the time, but with frequent brief drops to 50s and 40s. There's an option to run it at 30fps locked, but I don't think that's in any way a useful way to play this game.

After much fan outcry, there is a performance patch on the way, and soon, I believe. Ultimately having the game on a portable tipped the scales for me and I have no regrets, but yeah, I really hope the frame rate improves post-patch.

I bought the disc at GameStop for my PS4 and played it last night for the first time. It's a unique take on platformers and pinball games, but be warned that it did require a good amount of precision shots in order to get the ball to go into certain areas of the map. There were a few areas where I got a bit frustrated, but it didn't spoil my overall enjoyment of the game. And I've decided that I'm going to finish it at some point.

As someone who's loved the IDEA of a pinball RPG since Pinball Quest on NES, I really wanted to fall in love with Yoku's, but just didn't, and it's hard to put my finger on why. I think the interconnected 2D map and acquiring items that allow you to progress to new areas certainly qualify it as a "Metroidvania" as much as any other modern game that wears that hat. It's very charming and the physics feel perfectly fine. But I didn't feel like the "pinball" parts and the "RPG" parts blended quite as seamlessly as they could have. You really don't acquire any permanent upgrades that affect the pinball play (like bigger or more powerful flippers, say), and the actual pinball gameplay itself feels a bit restrictive: it's always confined to a single-screen-sized playfield.

At $10, I think it's a no-brainer if this sort of concept appeals to you at all. It's a widely-praised game and is certainly well-made, even if it didn't all come together as well as I'd hoped.

And Celeste is great. I typically don't enjoy punishingly-difficult platformers but I'm having a great time with it.

Yoku's Island Express is definitely worth the $10.  I bought it "new" from GameStop for $20 when they converted it.  It has such charm and is just all around very fun.  It's fairly short though and I'd say like 4-5 hours maybe, but there are collectibles and stuff to get as well if you are into that thing.  I didn't get everything but plan on going back to it at some point.  

I can't stress how much charm this game has though.

Also, there is a demo out there so you can play that and see if you like it.  I played the demo the day I saw it was converted and went the next day and bought it.

As for Dead Cells, I went with it on Switch instead of X1 or PS4 so that I could play it on the go and on flights, and I'm super happy that I did. I also paid more to get the physical copy of it and it's been more than worth it.  I found myself playing it on the couch at home often too while my son played in the room, for 10 minutes or so at a time sometimes.  It's perfect to pickup and play.  There is this 'hiccup' that happens on the Switch version sometimes but I haven't ever died or anything because of it.  And as mentioned, the devs know about it and a patch should be coming shortly for it.

Not particularly challenging, but very charming action RPG. Was a fun ~10 hour to 100%. Worth the sale price easily.

Figure this would be the best place to ask since I know nothing about the current state of Nintendo.

The Switch has those two joycon things (the blue and the red).

Can my two kids play against each other on the tv using just those?  Or is that not a great play experience?

Should I buy 2 Pro Wireless controllers for my kids instead because maybe they're better?

If I want to play as well (which I would in Smash Bros), I need another controller....or if I get the Pro ones, then I can use the joycon?

It would be nice for my kids to play the Nintendo games (Smash, Mario Kart, Pokemon Evee and Zelda...that's a good start, right?).

Or can I just save a ton of money and convince them that with our PS4, we don't need anything else?
