Figure this would be the best place to ask since I know nothing about the current state of Nintendo.

The Switch has those two joycon things (the blue and the red).
Can my two kids play against each other on the tv using just those? Or is that not a great play experience?
Should I buy 2 Pro Wireless controllers for my kids instead because maybe they're better?
If I want to play as well (which I would in Smash Bros), I need another controller....or if I get the Pro ones, then I can use the joycon?

It would be nice for my kids to play the Nintendo games (Smash, Mario Kart, Pokemon Evee and Zelda...that's a good start, right?).
Or can I just save a ton of money and convince them that with our PS4, we don't need anything else?

Thanks in advance.
I would buy one Pro Controller. The sideways joycon experience isn't that great and I couldn't stand doing that in Mario Kart.

I have many many giftcards that I have to buy at the store, give to my wife so she can give them to my mother so she can give them to me as a gift.  I also get to go to the store to buy giftcards for my mother to give to other people.  I stand by my dissatisfaction....but we shouldn't ruin this thread as well.  Also, I'm using the giftcard on the PS4 Aim controller.

Looking more closely at the Switch stuff, I guess for the good games you need BOTH joycons attached to something to make one good controller (it's all very technical, I guess)  So it looks like I should buy two Pro's for my kids and I'll use the controller that comes with the system.

Honestly though, for your kids, the two joycons are probably fine. They were fine for me in Mario Kart, Kirby, and Overcooked, and I have big hands.

The joycon attachment comes with the Switch. I think it sucks.

The Pros are large-ish, have better reception and latency, and you'll want it for Splatoon.

For Smash... no comment. But probably Gamecube controllers or Pro.

How old are your kids, or how stringent are their needs for a precise play experience? Using individual Joy-Con aren't perfect, but for most multiplayer experiences (Mario Kart, Overcooked) I've found most kids and adults alike are fine with using them separately. I've also found that a cheap pair of handled grips like these make them way more comfortable:

https://www.amazon.com/FASTSNAIL-Nintendo-Switch-Wear-resistant-Controller/dp/B06XZ1PCKK?th=1

I've also put over 100 hours into Breath of the Wild just using the included Joy-Con grip, and actually really liked it. Reminds me of a more comfortable Dreamcast controller. Have never missed a Pro Controller under I started playing some precision 2D platformers and needed a latency-free d-pad.

I'd say start out with what's included in the box, and invest in more later if you absolutely hate it. There are currently a million controller options out there for Switch, including some great retro-style stuff from 8bitdo, so keep your options open :)

Yes, they can play those games with just the Joy Con controllers just fine. It comes with a little slide attachment to make it more comfortable. I wouldn't buy a pro controller unless they are going to be playing a lot of single player games like Breath of the Wild. The grip the system comes with is pretty good and it's actually pretty cool just having the 2 Joy Con separately as far apart as you want them. I played the first 100 hours of Breath of the Wild with just the joy con and grip. I bought a Pro controller only because I had a $20 off coupon. It's better IMO for big single player games but the grip was doing just fine. It's also pretty fun playing Super Mario Odyssey with just the 2 Joy Con like it recommends when you boot up the game. I highly recommend getting a Switch to go along with the PS4. There are some awesome deals on the eshop right now with games being as low as 19 cents and plenty of good ones for only $0.99. Get a Switch and see how things go with just the Joycon controllers. The pro controller is freaking $70 so unless you score some good deal on it used or something, I would hold off and use that money toward a AAA game like BOTW, Odyssey, Smash etc.

They're, I guess you'd say, tweens.  They've only really played PS3/4 games so I don't know how they'd do.  I just figured you need shoulder buttons and extra sticks and directional pads for Zelda and Smash and whatever.   I really don't know.

Shoot, I just saw that last post.  Maybe I should actually go to the store and try the joycons if I can.  $70 is a lot if it's not necessarily needed.  I just figure I should get whatever they need now so they both can play easily the week they have off.

@AoA Yes, go check out the displays at the store.  BOTW requires both Joy Con so unless they play the game like this https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/05/04/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-best-goofs-gaffes-and-laughs-of-linked-together

they will have to take turns.  Every Switch ships with everything you need to play ANY Switch game. The grip it comes with makes it like a "traditional" controller but again, the system just comes with one grip and 2 Joy Con so you'd need another set of Joy Con and a grip if you want more of a "traditional" controller. Or you could by a Pro controller.  It sounds like you've never played Switch before so go check it out. Oh and Odyssey has a 2 player mode where one player controls Mario with one Joy Con and the other controls Cappy with the other Joy Con.

Gris seems to be 15% off if you own any other Devolver Digital-published game.
Devolver has been doing that for all of their titles. Don’t think there was ever a mention of this ending, which is awesome. Own one of their games and it seems like all other Devolver games will always be at least 15% off for you.

For a single-player game like Zelda, yeah, you need a traditional dual-analog controller. Ditto if they're, like, playing Fortnite or Splatoon online. But the local multiplayer modes of most games I've tried are optimized to control just fine with the reduced button layout of a single Joy Con. Most local multiplayer games these days are basically party games anyway, with basic controls that don't need to be perfect. Heck, I was surprised at how well Mario Odyssey controls with a single Joy-Con. If you're picking up Smash, and they're too young to have played it with a proper GC controller before, they won't think twice.
My daughter had played a lot of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, but getting a Switch was the first time we all enjoyed playing a console together as a family, and I think a lot of that is down to the fact that you basically get a pair of simplified, easy-to-use controllers right out of the box. I hope you guys have as much fun as we did!

20XX is an amazing game. If you enjoy Mega Man X, do yourself a favor and buy this game.
I swore off Switch side scrollers unless the discount is overwhelming there’s just too many. Getting Bulb boy and probably Gato Questo after reading those comments.

I watched a few videos on Cat Quest and ended up waiting and preordering the physical version.  I enjoyed every minute of that game.  The cat puns were solid, the story was pretty lite hearted, the way the duplicate items stack and increase stats rather than having to manage inventory was refreshing, the magic system was nice, and the way the game progresses and rewards exploration just really touched on a lot of what I love about gaming.   It's a no brainer purchase for anyone that watches a video and thinks "ok, this looks like it could be fun".  It is not overly difficult but it still has some solid challenge.

Nicely Cat Quest 2 is slated for 2019 and it'll have the option for same screen co-op.   It's probably the game I'm most hyped for at the moment (hopefully it gets a physical release).

Oh yeah, that game is great. But keep in mind you specified Megaman X. 20XX definitely favors the faster, dash type gameplay of the good games in that series. The more methodical, strategic gameplay of the regular Megaman games isn't really represented here.

The game is tough to get going, but I've played through it many times on all the characters (is Draco available on consoles yet?). The Rogue-type grinding might turn some off, but you can't beat the feeling of a good run when the RNG gods smile on you and you become stupid powerful. The boss powers having secondary abilities to neutralize various environmental hazards is a great touch.

There's about a day left on the Switchblades Kickstarter. It's a rail cover and kickstand for the Switch made out of hardwood.

And there's also a Joy Con Grips Kickstarter. The grips attach to the Joy Con themselves and allow the Switch to be docked and/or the Joy Con to be removed without requiring the removal of the grip itself.

Also, I'd like to recommend No Thing. The developers gave every level its own hook and managed to make them feel distinct in spite of the simple control scheme. The coldwave soundtrack itself is worth the cost of the game.

Eh, what can I say, their marketing worked on me. I store the Joy Con in a drawer to keep them away from dust, never though about dust getting into the rails until they pointed it out. Bastards.

The wood does give the Switch some much needed character, can't wait to see the purpleheart in person.

I ordered a wood trim one. Funny- the very first time I used my switch I thought “hey self, the sides of this thing are gonna get dirty/potentially damaged when joycons aren’t attached” and I’ve always kept them on when not in use.

The wood definitely gives it character now with a sort of retro-y vibe. $21 and I get a better kickstand out of it too? Sold.

Bouncy Bob is $0.01 on the eShop. I purchased it for around $0.17 a while back.
You got ripped off! :)

Honestly, I don’t like that there’s a game for a penny. It worries me a bit. Will we start seeing a flood of even crappier eshop games now like on iOS- all coming in at a dollar or even a penny? I don’t want that.

The race to bottom of prices worked out so well for mobile, it'll be fine for Switch, right? right?

$50 eshop credit for $40 through the Swych app- perfect for those of you like me who want to keep spending money they shouldn't. Use the code "MERRY" at checkout

Heads up for anyone about to download this app like I did: Tried using, says the promo code is sold out. (Yet is still listed under their promotions.) Bummer.

New to switch and finally got Zelda. Should I get the DLC before starting? Or is it all post game content?
And does Nintendo ever put dlc on sale?

Has anyone used the Bestbuy insignia dock? it's $35 instead of the $80 for the official dock. The reviews state no issues with bricking...

I kinda want a 2nd dock for the bedroom to play in bed, but $80+ for the Nintendo dock...

I wish I had it before finishing the game. There are a few things that would have been great having before I beat it.
1. Hero’s Path which shows you were you have been on the map for the last 200 hours. Very helpful.
2. Travel medallion which gives you a custom quick travel point
3.korok mask which helps you find those 900 korok seeds in the game. Would have been nice to casually find them as I went through the game the first time

I'd get it now. No need to wait. There's also a motorcycle you can get with the second DLC which makes traveling around Hyrule faster. Nintendo could always come out with the Game of the Year Edition I guess that has the DLC included but who knows if or when that will even happen. Breath of the wild is the best game I've ever played and congratulations on getting a Switch. You are going to absolutely love Breath of the Wild.

Flipgrip accessory is great if you want to play vertical games (classic, shmups, pinball) handheld such as arcade archives donkey king, pinball fx3, and ikaruga

I have a b2g1 used coupon to use at gamestop. I got capt toad, owl boy, and Bayonetta 2 on hold. I was thinking about swapping one of the games for ultra street fighter 2, but I already own the 30th anniversary version. I had batman on hold until I found it cheaper else where.
I kinda wanted the cartridge of sf2 , but if it has the same content as the 30th then I would more than likely switch to another game to get the most out of my coupon.
Any other recommendations for games in the 30-40 range?

Just a reminder that Bayonetta 1 is a download code, so don't expect to get that included.

I've been using one for about 2-3 months with no issues, had bought a used switch that didn't have a dock.

YMMV DYOR etc

Does anyone feel any strong opinion on the Starfox Starlink?

Besides the guy at Nintendo life who is surprisingly losing it over the “evolution” of what starfix was meant to be in ubisofts universe of Starlink, no one seems To like it

I hear likening it to paper weights, clearance bin fodder, give aways and just none too flattering

But again, no one championing it at all, more warnings than anything

Now I got it at $28(GCU) and I’m ok with playing the game with starfox(if possible, meaning not buying expansion or more parts) but is it worth it? I also used my last $25 card so I paid $3 total but I wanna cancel after all the bad talk on here lol

Anyone ACTUALLY like it?

I liked it. Starlink is a good game. It’s not the most amazing game you’ll ever play but it definitely is fun and worth $28. The digital version is a better deal since it comes with so much more but the starter kit is all you really need.

It’s not a star fox game but if you like space shooters and always wanted an open galaxy to fly around in, you should enjoy it.

I would also suggest looking on some forums where people who have actually played the game discuss it, as I haven’t seen too many first hand experiences here.

I got it day one and while it sucks that it dropped more than half the price a month later, I don’t mind too much since I enjoyed it.

Ok that’s the single most awesome reply and review in one post ive seen so far...

That gave the “keep” column one more check/notch

From what I understand, the difference is the digital version unlocked all weapon and crafts but the toys to game had starfox, who you can play/use his craft and weapons to beat the game ? Because one review noted starfox version might be limited but you also have “some of the best” in starfox character anway . Did you see that as true?

Yeah that's part of the reason I was thinking about swapping for something else. I went ahead and got the games, I'm going to try them out and if I either want to swap them, or keep them.

So the fast rmx is fun, it's like a F-zero meets Wipeout racing on the switch.

I have the digital deluxe of starlink, and have really enjoyed it. I haven't much bad things about it tbh.
I kinda wanted to get the physical pack to get fox and the arwing, but the digital deluxe has Everything!

Watch this video and see if this helps any.

I recommend the Binding of Isaac

To clarify you get all the Starfox stuff in the digital version also.

I was just about to ask this.

Picked up the starter set from BB at 50%, and then GCU stacked.. So I had to go that route. I'll probably end up buying a few weapons/ships though. Going back and forth on either digital or physical though. Could just wait for a sale on the complete digital copy and have the Arwing sit on the shelf. (Only hooked up the arwing once, use it digitally anyway)

Thats exactly what I did! I bought the starter pack because I'm a sucker for Starfox but also bought the digital edition when it was on sale because I don't buy physical copies anymore.

The Arwing is so nice and I kinda wanna get more ships to mix and match them 😂

Dont forget the Scramble/Cerberus ships.... Target and Gamestop both have them on sale for $12.50

Neither are in the digital versions, normal or deluxe..

Different ships do nothing special in this game though. It's not like a Skylanders situation where you need certain characters to access certain areas. I played through the whole game with the arwing and there was no reason to pick a different ship. Unless you are just absolutely in love with the look of a certain ship.
