I'm really tempted to get Starlink, but it seems like the expensive digital version is the only one that they are supporting from now on. I heard something about having to register your ships every week on the physical version, which sounds like a hassle. Do you like the game so far Frisky?
I ended up buying the Switch starter pack for $22.48 at Target tonight based on some recommendations both in the Target thread and other places I’d seen. I have no nostalgic connection to Starfox, either, so I’m just hoping the game is fun to play on its own. I grabbed a couple of extra figurines and a “build your own ship” since everything Starlink related was 70% off.

I have zero nostalgia for Star Fox, but I've enjoyed it a lot so far and it's probably the best piece of Star Fox content I've ever played. It's worth getting the Deluxe Edition when it's on sale for $30 or so to have all of the content from the first wave to play with since it's a good open world ship combat game.

It’s easy to be disappointed in Eshop sales, but I recommend that you just do what I do. Every year I tell myself that Nintendo will only have one good Eshop sale this year. So far I have yet to be disappointed.
Nintendo of America, you mean. Nintendo of Europe had a big first party eShop sale a week or two ago, and Nintendo of Japan has a handful of first party games on sale right now for Golden Week.

Here are the new deals for today:

They finally fixed the webstore so that it sorts the deals alphabetically and it's not a chore to put together the list anymore.
Thank you as always, Frisky! I’m glad to hear that it isn’t as much of a pain to put together these lists anymore.

I keep waiting for DKTF or NSMB to go on sale for like ~50 bucks since it's that price everywhere else right now. Will probably just hold out on those but bite the bullet on RE4 this month because RE4.

I’m hoping for a Nintendo of America eShop sale on their 1st party games during E3.

Anybody replaying Final fantasy x/X-2 on switch after having played Vita version?

I watched some graphical comparisons, and they seem mostly trivial. I'm trying to justify the $25-35 higher cost for Switch versus current PSN deal for $15 digitally.

I made a post about this before it came out. Apparently since its the "first time" back on nintendo (final fantasy) then its justifiable lol

id argue it looks better on vita oled and same lcd. Only reason I can see someone paying that price for it now on switch is..

1)They dont have any sony system/handheld

2)fanboy

Thanks. I'm going to jump on the Vita version, especially since I set up my ps TV and can replicate a switch now.

It's pretty similar in most respects. It's a PS2 remaster so I don't really think graphics matter. The Vita screen always felt too small though and I could be wrong but it feels like it runs smoother and loads faster on the Switch.

But probably the only real difference from the Vita is that the console versions lets you change between Original and Remaster soundtrack at any point.

Personally, I like jumping from TV to handheld whenever I want so for me I always prefer Switch versions. It's up to you whether that's worth it or not.

On a side note, many people seem to act like porting a game involves someone pushing a button that says "Port" and then calling it a day. It costs $50 because it takes a team of people working for a long time to port a game well, especially two huge games like this. And it's not just Switch. The XBox One version is $50 as well.

I would have gotten it for the switch despite having a Vita and PSTV smply for the ability to dock/undock the system and play the game multiple ways but...

I played some of X on my Vita and it was the most boring rpg I've ever tried. The whole thing is a linear romp with pretty much no exploration. It's like on auto cruise control the entire game going from battle to battle on a very linear path. I gave it up. What a waste of money that was.

If anyone is interested in these games... research them a little. I'm going to just stick with Xenoblade games and Dragon Quest for my RPG fix with random games as well that I research and seem potentially worth it.

Granted, the Xbone version has the benefit of being more easily portable from the PS4. But the low amounts of people buying it on Xbone probably kept the price higher.

One pet peeve of mine is that people always complain about ports being cheaper on another system because it's on sale after being released on it for years. E.g. FFX|X-2 being on sale now on PSN for $12.49, 5 years after it's release, means Switch physical version should also be $12.49. F. That.

This exactly, drives me crazy. These people are either children, or self-entitled adult babies that don’t understand that porting games to other systems, and in this case publishing physical versions of the game, actually costs the developer/publisher a decent amount of money. Square Enix covered their cost years ago for the PlayStation versions of the remaster, which is why they can sell it digitally at such a discounted rate.

So why wasnt bayonetta, catherine, and other games full price when ported to PC?

Your question makes it sound like you are doubting that a port is more difficult than pushing a button.

If it were a push of a button, then all games would come out on Switch since there would be zero overhead for developers. What was more likely a push of the button was the ports of Final Fantasy VII and IX to Switch, where were claimed to be ports of the PC version, though since they had been ported to mobile previously I’m assuming there was little work to make them run on the Switch’s ARM processor. Hence their prices were considerably less than $50, and I think they were priced the same as the App Store / Google Play mobile versions (also they didn’t have physical cart releases on Switch).

I think ported games upon release should cost a bit more on the Switch to make up for the overhead that went into the porting the game. However, you got games like Skyrim, Doom, etc that have been out on the system for a year and a half and the regular price on these games is still $60. A year and half after these games made it first debut on any system they weren’t still priced at $60. The cost of developing a game is higher than the cost of porting it. So why weren’t the costs kept at the initial price for those games on the other consoles for a long time? My point is, for some reason the developers/publishers are ultra greedy when it comes to putting games out on the Switch.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head^

I don't really have to deal with this issue myself, as I stopped supporting "N" products with the 3DS(and this issue didn't really apply there), but I often see what prices are based on frequenting CAG. I'm pretty sure developers see "N" getting away with this for their 1st party titles, and figure why not us? Since the NS's release, I've seen tons of 3rd parties state how their games seem to sell best on the NS, so this is happening in spite of silly pricing. "N" always gets away with this due to their kool-aid crowd who takes it on the chin no matter what, but once everyone else starts trying to just milk every last dime, somethings gotta give at some point.

Pure armchair economics on my part here, but surely the prices of these games must be influenced to some degree by supply and demand? Publishers lower prices on games after they’ve been out for a while because they’re looking at sales numbers and making a calculated decision about how many more units they could move if they lowered the price by X amount.

On a system like the Switch, where there are fewer triple-A game experiences (and thus less competition for the buying public’s dollars), I wouldn’t be surprised if hard sales data revealed that games like Doom and Skyrim are still doing great, so long after release. If buyers are consistently demanding a game, even at $60, what incentive do they have to lower it?

Again, just an amateur guess, but I’d be curious to see some figures. Not saying it’s fair or right, just saying it would make sense.

My 2 cents:

Games that show up on the Switch that I haven't played are still worth their value and are a new game to me.  I had no problems picking up X/XII since I haven't touched those games, the games are lengthy experiences, and the Switch's portable nature makes it more appealing.  I have a PS4 so I could have picked it up for less but I would be tied to the TV.  Sure it would be great to pay less but I do not feel like it's a rip off on Switch.  Square did have some overhead in porting this, advertising it, and they still want to make a profit so the price reflects that.  I would assume if this sells well they will be more apt to support the system (which they have done well so far) and see it as a profitable platform.  Key thing is it has to be profitable and not just a break even.

I don't see what the big deal is.  If the game isn't worth the price, don't buy it.  If it's cheaper elsewhere and cheap is your top criteria, then play it on the cheaper platform.

The games that are being reported as "selling best on switch" seem to always be INDIES rather than the ports of big AAA console games.  Those indies almost all have had some big sales over their time on the eshop.

The big console ports didn't sell best on the Switch.  They are more limited print and they weren't just free to port over.  If the stock is sitting around forever, they will get discounted and then quickly disappear from the market.   Still, much of the big ports have had some good solid sales (at least in physical form).  I got my copies of Skyrim and L.A. Noire during black friday.  Skyrim was $35 at Walmart.  L.A. Noire was $15 at Gamestop.   I didn't get Doom but it was around $15 at Walmart though it wasn't on the display.

The best selling one of the AAA port bunch has been Skyrim with just over a million copies.  So 1/30th of what the game has sold was on Switch.  It's good enough for them to be happy with it, but they didn't press 10 million copies and have to keep discounting them at retail to move them out the door while the mob rushes to keep up with the latest game.   That's another big thing here.  Games aren't getting printed at the same level as other systems.  So, there's less need to chase the customers by marking things down after 6 months to clear shelves.  Prices seem to be falling for games that the publisher has decided aren't selling enough and the stock is getting stagnant.

As far as pricing goes, it's not N that prices third party games... it's the third parties (and for physical, this includes retailers).  Blaming N for game prices by other companies is one of the dumber things I've read.   Sony doesn't set the prices for third party games, nor does Microsoft, Nintendo, Steam, or any other game platform company.

One last thing on pricing, as much as I love getting the big AAA game from earlier in the year for $10 during black friday on the PS4... or at half off 6 months after release, the majority of the games don't hold their value.  The fact that I got skyrim on switch for $35 and I can play the whole game at my leisure even nine months after purchase and then can flip it to ebay and get back close to what I paid even with paypal and ebay fees... well, I don't think that's such a bad deal that they hold their value.  Even if I don't sell it, I waited for a sale... there will be another one later.. just pay attention.

The demand for the Skyrim now isn't the same as the demand 1.5 years after it's original release back in 2011. And those prices fell at that point in time. Now the supply is the other part of the equation. And with digital releases, the supply is endless. Digital prices for the game are still $60, while rarely seeing a discount.

Not sure if physical copies of Skyrim is limited. If so, I think this thread would have conversations about it. I think they end up printing more if needed. Besides even if it was the case, like mentioned above, digital releases are not limited. So if physical prices were held at a high price while digital was discounted, that argument would make more sense. Kinda like how some physical copies of games now are higher than original retail value due to high demand and low supply.

The prices fell back then because they sold millions of copies of skyrim and the market for other systems is that there is a large group that will hold out for a price drop. So they do market demand based price drops and sales. But this was when it was never a low stock item and there were dozens on the shelves.

I mean limited in that there aren't a million unsold copies clogging up shelves. They aren't making the mistake of overstocking it like say what happened with Starlink and it's price drop a month or two after release. With digital they don't have to worry about stock, just how well something sells. If it's selling at $60 without any issue physically, then there's no reason to drop the price digitally if it's also selling at a steady pace. Additionally they may not want to cannibalize their physical sales with digital price drops let alone burn out the early adopters which creates resentment towards early purchasing. Each company seems to have their own strategy for each game and platform as well as how they treat their customers. Ubisoft seems to be operating on the switch the same as any other system. It seems like all of their games have had pricing tiers to stay relevant as long as possible.

Look at GTAV as a good example of something that held strong at it's high price. Sales tended to be pretty platform independent. And they made a good run at a hybrid between the fixed price (no sales) option of something like Minecraft and the typical race to the bottom of third parties do with their AAA offerings. So many of the big third parties are really all about market timing and eeking money out of gamers all the way down until the point that they have to stop producing copies because they aren't selling. The ones that really screw this up end up clogging up the bargain bins (and stores). In the end they make it easier to be a CAG, since the used market will be flush with copies, but they end up devaluing the entire process of buying games since most of it ends up holding little value until years later when it starts to become classic. Of course now with games requiring patches and stuff, it'll be interesting to see what of these last couple generations ends up classic gaming.

So here is a question. On the Wii and Wii U, were the non-first party games not discounted after a few months? I didn't own those consoles, so I don't know. I am trying to figure out if this is exclusively a Switch problem in the Nintendo Eco-system.

Also, Ubisoft is the exception on the Switch, not the rule. About 80% of my 190 game wish list on the eshop has either never seen a sale, or has seen a sale once or twice but with a laughable small discount. Of the remaining 20%, about 15% of that has seen a decent sale price, was games that are much lower budget/production value games.

There were no sales on the Wii Shop outside of a random Sega sale once. Wii U sales didn't happen on the eShop for quite a while after launch and nothing happened within a few months for anything people cared about.

Also according to this thread, it should be $4 physical because the HD trilogy on another system has been as low as $12.
And since most CAGs own multiple copies of games across multiple platforms all remasters should be free with proof of purchases. Because entitlement. SMH

"Sales" on games for the Switch have been much better than for past systems.. N is starting to catch up.

Side thought, with Octopath Traveller hitting PC/Steam soon... With all the complaints they had about it being Switch only, i'm going to predict it will sell more copies on PC. And it will be on sale much more often than the Switch version.

I doubt it will sell as well... It just isn't a very good game. I enjoyed my time with it, but I'm one of those people who will mindlessly grind for no reason. There is no narrative, and they didn't even bother intertwining the 8 characters, When it came out, there were not very many options for JRPGs on Switch.

Honestly, I have just started playing Tales of Vesperia and the way they handle party banter is amazing. It puts the "writing" of Octopath to shame - and that game is 11 years old.

People arguing against people that want cheaper games on a website called cheapassgamer. It’s like a straight man walking into a gay bar expecting the bar to packed full of straight women, no men, with their tits out and ready to slut it out.

Read the neon sign on the door people. This isn’t premiumbuttocksgamer or frugalbuttsgamer. It is the bottom of the barrel folks. Keep your expectations low, really low.

Gay bars are actually a good place to pick up straight girls lol and they have good prices

Though I didn't need it, I picked up Mana Spark and Cosmic Star Heroine off the eshop. I'm not sure when I'll get to it since I'm still playing through Octopath right now.

It's been like this since the NES. The Sony and MS ecosystems naturally developed to be a "race to the bottom" strategy to sell more copies. Sometimes it works out well, othertimes it completely fails and the publisher is left holding stock it can't move.

I don't think anyone is arguing. I think you are desperately latching onto another subject to distract from where it's going. I can do this too, we have people here that don't own a Switch and don't even buy 3DS games anymore, yet they still come by to complain about N and make dumbass comments about 3rd party pricing that Nintendo doesn't even control. This isn't dumbassgamer. **sarcasm**

On a serious note....

To me, the real CAG, is the person that spends the LEAST money per year on games without resorting to piracy and plays everything they buy. Somehow this has been perverted into the person that buys as many discounted games as possible with the "gamer" part being conveniently forgotten to build the biggest backlog of games that'll never get played.

For the last few years, I've been greatly scaling back my game purchases as they have exceeded my ability to play everything I've bought and I really need to downsize my collection. This year my gaming budget goal for the year is to not exceed $200. This will mostly be DQ Builders 2, DQ XI-S, and Cat Quest 2.. and then a few bargains here and there along the way. As long as I play everything I buy, cool.
