I keep going back and forth on physical vs digital with no strategy. I ended up trading in games like Dragon Ball Fighterz to "convert" them from physical to digital due to the current eShop sales, but then I picked up physical copies of MUA3 and FE, despite having 3 unused vouchers with no plans for them. Still have about 20 physical games out of a library of 90. Man, I just need to fully commit to one way or the other.
Just get rid of all your physical and only buy things you actually miss/want. Personally, the only "must convert" things are first party Nintendo titles. 2-3 years from now all your third party stuff is going to be dirty cheap, but Mario/Zelda/Pokémon will still be $60.

I like physical copies mostly especially for niche titles and first party Nintendo titles. Indie titles like the LRG ones and some other smaller ones I could use with just being digital though.

The whole digital vs. physical thing has been complicated by GCU which I still have until October, but my philosophy is that for $50 to $60 retail games I'll go digital only if I think it's a game that I'll play continuously or want to replay after beating it.  Mario Maker 2 is something I like to pop in for quick plays, and I kind of wish I had Splatoon 2 or Smash digitally, but maybe I'll convert them soon.  If it's something I only think I'll play once, I'm definitely going physical.

Fire Emblem is something I'm debating one way or the other - I still have another voucher to use, but I'm also not convinced that I'll play the game more than once.

Pokemon Sword/Shield seems like a surefire digital to me, but then I have to weigh the $10 in rewards I'd get on top of GCU.

Speaking of GCU, at first I was sad that mine is ending in a few months, but honestly I feel like there other very comparable deals that usually show up. If Walmart keeps putting out new release prices at $49.99 and Amazon still consistently price matches that is great. Plus mass genie has been doing anywhere between $42 and $48 on their prices. Arguably, those deals are better anyhow since there is no buy in price.

Who would have thought Walmart would be carrying the cheaper games at release torch. I'm a lot more picky about the games I get without GCU, but I have way too many anyway.

As someone who doesn't mind swapping out games (even for portables), I default to physical unless I can get the digital version significantly cheaper. There's resale value to consider, or in the case of 1st-party Nintendo games, the fact that they're more likely to get a good retail deal than a digital one.

On the flip side, even the collector in me has a hard time paying $35 for Hollow Knight physical when I know I could get the digital version for less than 1/4 of the price when it goes on sale.

I would make some comment about feeling bad for being so money-driven, but this is CheapAssGamer, after all.

Jumping in on the digital vs physical debate: in the past I've been all about physical because it's taken up less hard drive space but when ps4 came out and they were the same size I lost my preference. Then I got the switch and the physical is once again much smaller, but it's just become far more convenient to just buy digital. At this point the only games I buy physical are the ones I'm not sure if I'll like so I have the option to trade it in if I don't like it. I have around 100 digital games and 5 physical lol

Walmart is trying to kill Amazon through several fronts. This is just another way.
I never thought I'd be behind any of Wal-Mart's decisions going forward, but if they're championing the fight for retail survival, it's hard not to be on board.

This can be good for places like Best Buy too, assuming they price match Wal-Mart's stuff. Retail benefits all around!

The Wal-Mart stores around me are a hassle to buy games at usually because they have one person working electronics and they never know what you are talking about. Still worth it to save $10 a lot of the time though.

As far as physical versus digital goes. I see very little benefit to digital currently as the games are rarely cheaper and usually more expensive or the same price digital as physical and once you have it digital you can't sale it or trade it in.

As a collector I will always go physical over digital. The only benefit I see with digital is not having to swap carts/discs.

As long as businesses are competing we are winning. I go where I get the best deal.

I mostly buy physical on the games I think I'll love the most and want to keep around for decades to come.  I go digital for games on sale & cheap especially when I'm not 100% sure about them because at the price point I'm buying at, I would lose that much buying physical and paying fees to resell (plus time) versus just going cheap digital to begin with and deleting it.   I want my physical collection to be small so I'm being extra picky about what series I follow and the new stuff I give a chance to when it comes to physical purchases.  I'm also being pretty picky about my digital purchases because I have plenty to play.

Amazon ending the 20% discount on preorders/new-releases was a blessing.  Before that happened, I paid for prime and I sometimes let a game slip in that I might have passed on just because the discount made the launch price too tempting.  Since my prime discounted preorders have all shipped as of January, this Walmart deal has made it less of a rush to decide at launch if I want something.  Plus everything I have bought near release has been at a solid discount.  I went ahead and got Judgment (PS4) since I'm going to start playing it and it ended up saving me about 35%.   Now Amazon dropped DQ XI-S to $49.99 .. so I don't even need to cancel that and get it from Walmart.

I prefer physical media, myself, but I don’t get this. Any physical data storage medium is going to degrade over time, whether that’s in cartridge, disc, or yes, even hard drive form. The advantage in longevity then has to go to digital distribution, since you can transfer it to new media as older ones fail, and can keep doing this as for as long as you have a way to connect the newer media to your console. Certainly you can do this with a physical copy, as well, but it’s significantly more complicated.

The benefit for me, other than swapping carts/disc, is to not having stuff on shelves. I strive to live that clean, minimalist lifestyle. Any games I do end up buying physically at a discount eventually end up getting traded in or sold before I've usually even played a minute of them, just because I hate seeing them on a shelf. My collecting/hording ways died at around 2004, and luckily the digital future finally caught up with my preferred way of life.

It's already been announced that re-downloading DSi and Wii digital purchases will be ending. Yes digital get's preserved, but only through piracy. The stores go away over time. I look at digital purchases as disposable. It's like buying fast food. It's here today but the future isn't so clear. For many games, that's perfect for me. For the ones I love the most and want to revisit, I like taking the barrier of entry away from the storefront. I have 30 year old games that still work fine. I'm not worried about the media degrading over time. I'll be dead before most of my games stop working. As is, the games I want around for decades to come is a very short list. So, not as big a deal to lean physical on them as I like feeling like I actually own something rather than have the temporary license to play it. Even if the physical copy is also considered a license, it's not like they can pull my access from playing it easily.

As someone who has been purging all the "stuff" they've acquired from years of thrift... The thought of having zero videos games taking up space everywhere is glorious to me.

Legitimately laughed out loud. When I asked the single person there if they had any amiibos there, he said "Amiibos? Isn't that the tablet thing that little kids play with?"

If you preorder on Amazon and they price match walmart at release do they adjust the preorder price lower or credit you back the difference if its already shipped? I ask because I have some credit that has to be used before the end of August so I put it towards zelda but if I could get it $10 off at walmart on release anyway it kinda feels like a waste to use my credit on it on amazon.

Even if the physical copy is also considered a license, it's not like they can pull my access from playing it easily.
You realize that once you’ve got data on a drive or memory card of some kind, you can copy it to other drives and memory cards, right? You don’t have to redownload anything.

Just look at the updated doom that bethesda just dropped on us.
They did remove the old version from being downloaded with no warning.

Yes I know they “said” it was a mistake and put it back up.

I do both digital and physical, I used to be 99% physical (damn you GCU) now it’s a mix. Cheapest price wins. Some games I only want physical though, I’ll pay the premium for them.

My problem is physical might as well be digital now given how most games need huge patch downloads to even work correctly

This is the real issue with assuming physical is superior in a preservation way. If a game requires a patch to work or a connection to the internet, it’s really no different.

I believe the pre order price guarantee is only active until it ships or before release day. So they won't automatically credit you as far as I understand it.

After the Switch I'll probably care less about physical but companies like LRG make it still viable since they are going the extra mile on some games to make sure all the DLC and patches are there.

I buy almost all of my games physical on multiple consoles, and I have yet to find an unpatched game that wasn't completely playable.

Requiring an internet connection for single player games or games with large single player components is of course completely different, and is something I will never support.

In my opinion, there is never a good reason to require an internet connection for single player.

Day 1 patches are annoying and sadly getting to be the “norm” but the vast majority of them can be played without them just fine.
Unless they do require internet of course. And achievement/trophy stuff wouldn’t work until updated.

Huge bugs that halt your progress and truly make the game unplayable, are not as common as ones that make the game harder/easier and break achievements/trophies are much more common.

Still annoying, but we as consumers have allowed the industry to continue down this path.

If you have a game with both single player and multiplayer modes where the player character is persistent (ie, progress is saved between games) and can get stronger equipment/stats/etc over the course of the game (e.g. in an RPG), AND you want the player to be able to play the same character (with the same progress) in both SP and MP, it does make some sense so that people can’t modify their characters in the offline mode and then take that into the possibly competitive online sphere. I think this is why, for example, Diablo 3 does this sort of thing.

For the most part, though, it’s implemented as an attempt at antipiracy measures, and is usually laughably ineffective at that.

To be fair, games today feature exponentially more complicated code than they did twenty years ago, and bug testing budgets are higher on at best more of a linear scale. Bugs, even big ones, can fairly easily slip through even reasonably rigorous testing, and being able to issue an easily accessible patch based on consumer experience is actually a really positive thing on the whole.

That said, there are some companies out there that could absolutely stand to implement far more rigorous testing than they do.

Yeah, this is exactly how I've always looked at this issue, as no way a game like RDR2 catches all the issues and bugs out of the gate, no matter the level of testing. Then of course as stated, you have some games on the complete opposite end of the spectrum where it's like they know things can be fixed, so why pay to much in testing, when problems can be fixed later?

It's like anything I suppose, as it can be good or bad, depending on how it's used and implemented. I always tell my son it's a good thing a game can be fixed after the fact, as back in the day, that wasn't an option, and a broke game could end a company. So while I would like to see all things added and done before hand, that's just not all that likely in the current state of the industry.

I'm streaming the cult stealth game The Church in the Darkness (link).

In terms of Physical vs. Digital,   i've made the switch, with the switch to go all digital.   I thought i'd have a harder time going all digital,  but it's been good, with lots of sales.    The only time i go physical (1-2 Switch, Mario and Rabbids)  would be if im 50/50 on a game, and likely to sell it, and not want to keep it.   I really hope nintendo keeps it promise of the "nintendo account"  and not having to re-buy the same games multiple times.

Ive also decided to convert my Xbox to digital as well.  I've pretty much stopped buying physical xbox games, and just 10-12 games left over, i've yet to sell.   Currently using PS4 as my physical game system.  I don't trust PS with digital, with their lack of content from PS3 crossing to PS4.  At least it sounds like 4 should convert to 5.

BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle is getting another round of DLC for $25. The base game with all current DLC characters for $29.99 is a good deal.

I bought the base bbctg this morning. Is it possible to call them and ask for a refund cuz I bought the wrong game? I bought it off a eshop gift card.

You can try contacting Nintendo customer service. There's obviously no guarantee they'll help, and I'm not sure what Nintendo's policy might be like for this sort of thing, but there's no harm in asking, and NoA's CS tends to be unusually helpful as CS goes.

eshop sales are final
So are most digital sales, but customer service can come through sometimes. I've done something similar with Sony's CS after grabbing something on PSN and they issued a refund.

I thought about going all digital with the switch but how easy is it to get them onto a new Switch if something happens.
Customer service can remotely remove your account from old switch if it’s no longer functioning. Then you log into new switch and download your games again.

You realize you can't easily do this with DSiWare as it goes to internal memory only. Also the Wii is a bit odd how it worked as well. The only way to back much of this up is through hacking the systems. Most digital purchases (outside of those pc games that are drm free) are linked to accounts and often specific hardware. So you pretty much have to hack or pirate when your original hardware or it's storage fails once the storefront is gone.

Then there's the entire thing of backing up digital games up to writable media. The statement against physical games is the media will degrade over time so it's not great for preservation. Yet backup drives, discs, and other media degrade at a faster rate than physical games do. Plus then you have to maintain the library of games on a physical device which requires more work than just having the phsyical games. The convenience of digital goes away the moment the store does.

Of course the big thing with physical is I can just go sell off stuff when I'm tired of it and sure I won't replay it. Given I lean towards single player games that don't need patches to work, I'm pretty well set if I end up wanting to part with games. I've sold enough classic stuff I owned through the years to know my taste in games often proves to hold it's value well. I'm sure I've made more than I spent ... though it might be more break even when it comes to inflation adjusted numbers. Either way, I walked away from games with cash in my pocket. It's hard to do that with digital unless you sell your account to someone... and I think all of the storefronts frown heavily on that (not that they can stop it).

Minimalism is cool. These days I am more about a curated collection. I'm more of a minimizer than minimalist. Part of the desire I have for a curated collection is linked to my eventual death and legacy. It'll be more likely my family (mostly my kids and their possible offspring) will check out what I loved in gaming if the collection is small (like 24 games or less). IF it's digital, they won't know anything about what I enjoyed. IF it's too big they'll see it as a mess they need to go through and sell off (donated, or trashed) and what I loved playing will also be washed away. At least this gives me a chance to pass on some great experiences to someone and have them get a small idea of what I enjoyed. I'm not to where I want to be yet with my collection size, but I am making progress getting it down in size and it helped the moment I opted to stop bargain hunting so much and opted to narrow my purchases to specific franchises and games that appealed to me enough to play right after purchase.

In any event, enjoy games however you enjoy them. It's all good.

Long ass process to start over with the ones I had, much easier to find them online.

I’ve gotten an eshop refund before on 3ds I bought Pokémon yellow French edition accidentally it was in the top downloads n I thought it was English.

Recently moved and man I have way too many games. As I get them unpacked and such i'm going to seriously do one of those am I going to play this within say a few years type thing and just sell/donate the rest. I know we are CAG on here, and many I have gotten through sales and all, but I can't play them all likely within 2 lifetimes.

Please remember I’m not arguing against physical media. I said right at the outset that I prefer physical media in general.

What I am saying is that in the long run, digital is better for preservation. And this is true: I have my digital PSP, Vita, and 3DS games—including DSiWare—backed up on multiple drives. This didn’t require any hacking or much in the way of special tools (I bought a USB to SD card and Memory Stick Pro Duo adapter several years ago, and the Vita requires migration software from Sony to transfer data over wifi); all I had to do was copy data from one location to another. If I want to restore something from my backup, all I have to do is copy that data back. There are plenty of guides out there on the internet in case you’re worried about copying anything to the wrong location, but that’s about as complex as it gets with those systems, at least. Managin those backups isn’t any more effort than managing my computer backups because I keep them together and transfer them to new locations together as needed; since I have to do this for my PC anyway, this adds at most a minute or two to an exceedingly rare process. As for home consoles, well, most consoles these days let you connect USB drives as external storage, handling the formatting and readability without any extra effort on the user’s part, making copying games from an internal drive or memory card even simpler, and this process can be repeated as long as the console itself works.

None of my physical media has failed, thank god—though I did recently have some trouble with Sonic & Knuckles on my Nomad, I haven’t done significant testing to determine a cause—but I feel a lot better about the longevity of my digital library than I do about my physical.

I’ve had really good luck with drives so far, but I l’ve recently come to the conclusion that redundant backups are always a good idea if you can manage it.

I don't care for physical, but until they gets the digital rights down to be like physical, I can't fully support digital. MP3s etc are easy as hell since they're small and easy to backup anywhere. Video and games get much more complicated.

It feels good to purge them. It was fun to collect them, to hunt down the deals but eventually it becomes spending money for box art.

If your finances allow, put all the money you get selling games in a separate area from your usual spending money. I did that about 10 years ago now and I’ve been pulling from that fund since. It has allowed me to continue to game without worrying about the money since it was all from previously sold games.

A game you will play now is worth spending money on even at full price. Nothing ever goes in a backlog anymore since no savings is worth hoping I’ll find time.

Not a bad idea. My purchasing and collecting of games skyrocketed during the PS2 era (I blame Goozex) and never really stopped. Now I have too many games and not enough time. I still want to play newer games that come out, but those are mostly for higher wants now.
