I don't know about anyone else, but the prices on the Switch eShop and the gold coins that I earned killed it for me this holiday season. I still haven't opened any of my AAA physical games because I built up a huge digital library so quickly on this system within about a month's time.

And I finally used the dock with the Power A Wireless Controller that I bought on Black Friday. No rumble, but this thing is boss!
Which is boss? The dock or the Power A wireless controller?

Has anyone played Civilization 6 on the Switch? I used to love them years ago and I missed the online sales for it but saw it was $20 at GameStop.

The game is an unguided mess..I read the reviews and thought it would be great..10 minutes in, I gave up.... Maybe I'm too much of a simpleton

I purchased it when it first came out and have put quite a few hours into it. I think it works fine in handheld and docked mode. It does take a bit to get adjusted to the systems in play, but it will click if you keep at it.

I don’t see a cheap version of the Japanese release. Wasn’t the us versions patched to include the Japanese roms?
Nope. That’s the whole reason I ended up importing the Japanese version. The update simply fixed some bugs, localizations, text, and (my biggest gripe, aside from no Japanese roms), correcting the audio to it’s proper stereo output (was set to mono at launch):

http://www.capcom-unity.com/strumslinger/blog/2018/10/19/update-for-street-fighter-30th-anniversary-collection-on-october-23

It cost me another $50ish USD to import, but at least, now, I can actually enjoy Super Turbo (X: Grandmaster Challenge). The AI in the American version is buggy as all hell. Feels like the game has been hacked, even at the lowest difficulty setting, lol.

I tried it out and the menu system is horrible. I’m glad I got it pre-owned from GameStop because I took it back. Civ games always had a lot to manage and I knew that from experience but the interface was too cumbersome.

I spent New Year's Eve playing the Switch in docked mode, ordered a $10 eShop card from Target.com, and bought the following:

Ambition of the Slimes

Julie's Sweets

Monster Bugs Eat People

Skee-Ball

Subara City

Transcripted

Witch and Hero

My New Year's resolution is not to buy anymore games in 2020.  Let's see how many hours I can go before breaking it.  :shame:

Not Asked For
on A Robot Named Fight:

Currently $0.99 till the 5th, I picked up A Robot Named Fight for a few simple reasons.  First I love the original Metroid.  Second it was cheap and others were buying it.  It also helped that I had enough gold coins to make it happen.   The risk for me was that it's a roguelite and I typically don't enjoy the genre very much.   Instead of being pure random it's generated in more of a minecraft seed style.  So you get seed ids.

Overall, the game is great and not hampered by the randomness.  There are some guns and things you'll find on specific runs that aren't in others which adds to how you complete the area.  The overall level design is quite great.  It never feels cookie cutter as there are hidden items in walls, hidden areas to find, and while you only get a thumbnail map outside of special map rooms... it does a great job of mapping each run.  Even though this is a roguelite metroid game, I have run across a room that will let you continue if you die once.  So it's not as punishing feeling as other games, even though not much carries forward between runs.   The fear of dying adds to the tension which makes this feel a bit more metroid than even metroid since you know worst case you respawn at your save but in this game you may not even find a respawn room at all.

Overall, a great way to blow $0.99 (gold coins or cash) if you love traditional 2D original Metroid.  There is a story and a purpose for what you are doing and it works surprisingly well.  The controls take a little getting used to as you can lock into an up angle or down angle but you can only aim straight up if standing still.

Hope this helps someone.

Thank you, Frisky. :)

I picked it up just based of your post..

Also is there no sale this week?
There’s a couple of things, nothing major. I have read today that the US eShop should probably have a first-party sale next week (a week after the EU sale is the logic, apparently).

Edit: added today, I meant. Frisky is right-er.

Great review. Thanks for posting it. You mentioned some important aspects that give good insight such as how the level design is, the difficulty I had been on the fence on this but I’ll probably pick it up.
I almost picked up Slain: Back From Hell until I read about how frustratingly difficult it is.

For those that have GameStop Pro subs, it seems like they're moving to giving you a $5 coupon for an item each month, which I was told was usable on currency cards for PSN, XBL, eShop, etc. Sounds like a solid way to get some digital currency for a discount each month.

Nice, hadn't thought of that when they tried to upsell me to renew my expiring Pro sub (next month). That would be a good deal if they don't change the currency card policy. Last time I used a $5 points rewards their system let me buy an eShop card. Perhaps I'll just keep a close eye on the CAG board to make sure that this workaround is working out for people. $15 up front to get $5 off a $10 eShop card each month. $75 out of pocket to get $120 eShop credit spread throughout the year is a good deal.

When they announced this in November (when I had to renew, see other thread on it) the clerk told me at that time it had to be used in a game or something physical no digital or gift card etc, guess they changed that.
Good cause it would have gone unused for most months, now I can get something out of it. (If I remember to use it cause it’s in store only. Unless that changed that also)

Edit: the other thread form nov. and it looks like people are able to use it for PSN but not eShop. Didn’t see anything about Xbox

Pro Membership might be tempting to get as this generation winds down there will be tons of PS4 games and of course legacy games from 360/PS3 to get. $5 a month is a cheap way to keep expanding the collection. Of course if there's nothing to pick up I could always get a eshop card as many have suggested.

I’m going to hold off getting a GS Pro membership until there’s more confirmation on whether of not the certs work for eshop credit. I don’t see me using them for anything else.

Is Dragon Quest 1-3 worth it in 2020?
The games themselves are good/great, but the versions on Switch are ports of a mobile adaptation where they made a bunch of aesthetic changes that haven’t aged super well and, at the time of launch, carried over other changes made to fit the constraints of the mobile format, like no monster animations in DQ3.

I tried using it on used games and was told it couldn't be applied, new items only. For what it's worth the employee seemed surprised by that too.

IIRC the GBC version of III has more content, particularly post-game, than the other versions if you don't mind the less colorful and detailed graphics.

1 + 2 should be the same content wise. 3 is the best of the bunch regardless as you can name your own party members and pick and change their classes. 1 has no party members, just the protag, and 2 has three set-in-stone characters and is said to be most difficult.

They don't look good, but play just fine. Might be good to have a walkthrough on hand if don't want to wander around aimlessly all of the time. You just missed a sale on them that ended a few days ago.

I’ll try the first one when they go back in sale,

Didn't work for me when I tried to buy an Xbox gift card when I tried it in the store. Maybe they've fixed it since January 1st.

This might be of interest to some of us: the Hong Kong eShop also has a webstore.
https://store.nintendo.com.hk/games/all-released-games

In particular, this means you can get digital versions of the English-localized Super Robot Wars games and their DLC.
SRWT: https://store.nintendo.com.hk/70010000015667
SRWX: https://store.nintendo.com.hk/70010000019769 (comes out this week, includes early purchase DLC until February)

According to what I’ve looked up, US credit cards can be used on this store, though you might need to set a travel notice with your bank.

So stupid question would I set up one profile to be from hong kong, buy this digitally then play it on my main profile that's based on the US? I know this works on the PS4 but I'm new to how different eshop markets work on the switch.

That’s basically how it works on Switch too.
Here you could also change your main account’s region while you buy the game and switch it back.

My next question was about to be about the DLC but it looks like the dlc can be used across profiles. Thanks!

When looking at the hong kong store it has the same popup possibly that comes up on the argentina and columbia shop store that tells you basically that they will send you a code, is that correct? Do you just purchase the game and a code that you can redeem on any account get's emailed to you? I'm assuming the hong kong versions of these also have english?

Google Translate says they’ll send a code to your linked email, and you should probably assume that the code they send will be locked to the Hong Kong shop, or to the ones on the Asia region.

The specs on the game pages list the supported languages for each one. You’d be looking for a line like this:

支援語言: 英文

With the AR and CO shops you can redeem the codes on your NA account with no issue. That's what I was wondering if the Hong Kong and Korea store do. The Korea store has the lowest cost.
