Debating about picking up one of slightly more expensive titles from this sale. Considering purchasing one of the following: Children of Morta, Timespinner or Momodora. Has anyone played any of these titles? Would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance to those who respond. Thanks
I just picked up children of morta and I’ve only played it for an hour, but it’s really good. The combat is fun and there are a variety of buffs to pick up to enhance. It’s rogue like where death starts you back at the family’s house, but your XP and money go with you to level up all the family members. So I’d say go for it.

What are some favorite roguelike games of folks?

I've played:

Dead Cells

Enter the Gungeon

Crypt of the NecroDancer

Spelunky
My favorites:

  • Children of Morta - Great story and way of working it into the progression whether you win or lose that run. Lots of fun classes/characters to play and switch between. My #2 game of 2019.
  • The Binding of Isaac - The combo of items leading to some crazy runs and action that is a lot of fun.
  • Spelunky - I've never been good at it despite seeing the different types of runs done lots of times, but it's always fun to play even then.
  • Sparklite - Not too hard by the end, but the combo of Zelda, Rogue Legacy, and its own unique weapons and abilities made it a blast to play through it and the only roguelike I want to platinum on PS4.
  • Neon Chrome - A great dual-stick shooter with the framework of a Rogue Legacy and the great shooter mechanics that 10tons introduced with Crimsonland.
  • Dicey Dungeons - Got this with the Winter Steam sale, but it's a rad Yahtzee roguelike with a bunch of great, wildly different classes that add a lot of variety to the different runs.
  • Into the Breach - Fantastic turn-based strategy game with mechs and a chess-like style to its action that works really well.
  • Solitairica - Fantastic solitaire roguelike that's on Steam or smartphones that works a lot better than you'd expect.
Others I also like:

  • A Robot Named Fight - Good $0.99 Super Metroid roguelite
  • Chasm
  • Cadence of Hyrule
  • Dead Cells
  • Downwell - So bad at this, but it's fun while it lasts.
  • Enter the Gungeon
  • FTL: Faster Than Light - It's criminal that this didn't get a console port
  • Gonner
  • Hades
  • Moonlighter - The shop stuff is a nice chill change of pace compared to the action
  • Noita
  • Nuclear Throne
  • Slay the Spire

I'm not saying the world is ending
I wasn't specifically talking about you.. I just hastily responded, hit post... and then read what I said. I went back and edited the last bit cause even I realized it may be a little harsh. :whistle2:

So don't take it personal.. it wasn't meant to be. Pretty much every time any non US eShop price is mentioned the conversation gets out of hand. Between people saying you shouldn't, people saying it's fine.. and others not wanting any part of the conversation in this thread, and the "Nintendo will ban you" crowd..

When Mexico would have some sale on a game or two and it was mentioned in this thread, nobody really cared. (for example Stardew Valley was like $4.xx I think, and cheaper now from AR) It just seems that since the Argentina eShop opened, that's when the discussion about *where* you get the games tends to get out of control a bit.

helveticastandard Took the initiative and created this thread for all the international eShop discussion, and for the most part it is kept over there. (I hope helveticastandard understands that many of us watch that thread but don't always post.. the info is *very* helpful and I always head to that thread when I see a new post has been made)

https://www.cheapassgamer.com/topic/370810-the-eshop-international-webshops-thread/

Frisky does a great job with this thread, so it's probably best to keep the international purchases out of this thread and in the designated one.

I played both Children of Morta and Timespinner. Both are excellent games but play differently.

Timespinner is very similar to a Castlevania style game. The music and story for the game are excellent. The gameplay is similar to modern castlevania. It has a nice time traveling element to the gameplay and story. I finished the game twice for the platinum Trophy on Vita and really enjoyed it.

Children of Morta is a dungeon crawling rogue lite. You play as different family members and try to complete dungeons. Think of each family member as a different character class as each one is unique. If you die in a dungeon you back to the manor and some excellent story elements are played out. The narrator is great. You do keep your experience gained and money you may find in the dungeon and you can use this to upgrade the manor which is essentially your family traits and buffs. One of my favorite games on 2019 and very worth it.

If I had to pick between the two games i would give the edge to Children of Morta but both games are really good.

I vote for it being Geno based on this evidence:

Gotta add Binding of Isaac to this list - it's one of my favorites on the Switch (and made all the better due to the portability and pick-up-and-play).

So I might have done something dumb this weekend. I bought the 8bitdo sn30 controller even though I already have the pro controller. This is the danger of disposable income I guess...
The one 8bitdo controller I have had itself patched out by Nintendo and would no longer pair properly. YMMV with these controllers.

>Controller works fine for months
> Switch system update
> controller unpairs and I have to reconnect it, but it kept disconnecting
Updated controller driver through website to no avail. Now it's a retropie controller which I never use beause ps3 dualshocks are better . Thanks Nintendo! 👍

I'm gonna have to start being more proactive with buys. I feel like the list of sale prices in the eshop was a lot longer the other day.

Oh well. At least waiting got me a discount on Puzzle and Dragons Gold.

I don’t remember, is it possible to buy 3DS eShop titles in a normal browser? I wanted to buy some stuff, but I’m traveling and forgot to bring my system.

Yeah, it's the same as Switch and Wii U games, so you can check the list in the OP and grab whatever you want on the webstore.

Just a heads up, Super Meat Boy is $8.99 right now, looks like a 48 hour sale. I got an alert from Dekudeals:

https://www.dekudeals.com/items/super-meat-boy?country=us&utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=drop

I loved this game on the 360 years ago but I never finished it.

Interesting - I might just have to pick this up (LOVED N+ on the DS, and it looks to be quite similar in terms of punishing gameplay).

Picked up Hyrule Warriors for $42 from Amazon (went physical since they matched the digital sale price). Also grabbed Cuphead from Arg eShop for $7.

I'll probably pick up Katamari Reroll from BB for $16 before my GCU ends soon. The digital sale price is nice, but I guess I prefer physical copies whenever possible.

Any thoughts on Astral Chain? I have some credit left at Amazon and it is currently my front runner.

Also, for those that got Gonner for $3, is it worth it? Seems like it may be a little light on content.

Interesting - I might just have to pick this up (LOVED N+ on the DS, and it looks to be quite similar in terms of punishing gameplay).
I liked N+ more than SMB, but it is a solid challenging platformer worth your time. I also liked N+ over N++, but that one is good as well.

My jaw hit the floor from reading that you paid $42 for Hyrule Warriors. It's just a port of a Wii U/3DS game with added stuff. I passed by a closing GameStop that had it for half that price and I still balked at it. There must be like literally 50 Dynasty Warriors games and spin-offs. This one is Zelda-themed, but the core gameplay is the same as it's always been.

Not everyone played it on the Wii U or 3DS.

And if lilman is enjoying it, why do you care?

Hell, Gamestop could be GIVING AWAY smash bros on switch. and I still wouldn't take it.. I mean it's all the same right? there's so many of them and the core gameplay is the same as it's always been.

I'm more concerned that his jaw hit the floor. Should we call an ambulance?

Gentle reminder that your last chance to grab something from most of the New Year deals is between tonight and tomorrow.

There’s easily over 50 kinds of jaws out there, and the core functions are the same, they’ll just balk at it.

You wouldn't take a free Smash even if you weren't going to play it? You could trade it back into GS since their cash values are currently the same as trade credit and get $30 for nothing.

I care because I don't like publishers rereleasing years-old titles on new platforms for almost the cost of a new game. Witcher 3 is like $6 on PS4 or Xbox, but $50 on Nintendo. Even Todd Howard said people should stop buying Skyrim if they don't want the game to keep getting rereleased. People say they want cross-platform support, but then keep buying the same game on different platforms, all but ensuring that it'll never happen.

I think there have been old Resident Evil games ported to new platforms for $20. That's fine. Or when Valkyria Chronicles was ported to PC at that price, it became a bestseller on Steam. That's great. But the same game for full price is ridiculous. Publishers only get away with it because consumers allow it.

Let people enjoy things, man. Not everyone owns every console.

Putting a game like Witcher 3 on the NS is a monumental task, that I can only imagine the cost of. You also need to sell a certain amount to recoup the cost involved. Certain games described, can often be easier to port than others, especially when a game is going up the hardware chain to a beast system VS trying to fit a beast of a game, on probably 5 year old tech.

I do agree certain games can be ported easier than others, and in those cases you probably get a $20 price tag(other times you do get greed). A game like the W3 also needed the biggest cart currently available VS being offered on a disc of some type), which also isn't cheap, as the cost is determined by qty ordered. I'm sure small numbers may have been produced, as the developers probably don't want to risk to much, and if sells are robust, more can be produced later.

But, even if none of this was a factor, why assume someone else doesn't see the value where you don't? My wife buys shit all the time I find a complete and utter waste of funds, and she probably feels the same about most of my purchases. The same goes for my son, as we both don't like what he waste his allowance on, but it's his money to do with what he wants. I try to educate him at every turn so he can make an informed purchase, and sometimes that works, and sometimes not. I don't lose sleep either way, and no one else should either!

This probably isn't pertinent to the ongoing discussion, but I just wanted to say that I still haven't bought a first-party Nintendo game for the Switch not because I wouldn't want to play them, but because they're so expensive relative to the other third-party and indie games that are available.  There are so many more games available that are cheaper and, in some cases, just as good.

The only game that I've purchased that I might call a remaster is Carnival Games, and I only own that game because I bought it during one of the recent sales at Target.  But I wouldn't want to play Carnival Games on the PS4 or Xbox One anyway because they don't have motion controls.

I used to think this way. But it ultimately comes down to whether or not you want 30 indie games at $1.99 each, or 1 copy of Super Mario Odyssey, or Smash Ultimate, or Pokemon Sword, and the ability to play those with friends. Now I try to mostly buy Nintendo titles when they go less than $50. The stories are usually better, and I'm invested in their mascots more.

Also, screw the Mario Kart games. That series has taken a nosedive over the years and is no longer about racing prowess. You can go from first to dead last in a matter of seconds thanks to the powerup allotment, especially on 200cc. There are other indie kart racers that don't rely so heavily on luck to help less skilled players win.

Not sure if I want to get Mario and Sonic Winter Games or Sports Party. Any suggestion which would be better for a 8 year old? Also going to pick up Tesla vs Lovecraft

Astral Chain has really fun combat (my personal favorite out of all Platinum games) but everything else is so-so. The story is interesting but the actual writing is very bland. It's worth pointing out because you spend a ton of time just running around chatting to NPCs and the game is very side quest heavy.

The biggest complaint from reviews was that most of the main story progression takes place in this alternate dimension that is made up entirely of these metallic black/red rocks. It's visually not very interesting, especially for how much time you spend there. And while these areas are where you will do most of the games combat they also force you to do "puzzles" which just boils down to generic stuff like shooting some orbs to open a door or having your companion stand on a switch to activate an elevator you're waiting on. Personally I did not mind the other dimension since the combat was great and that's what I wanted from the game, but the puzzles absolutely felt like busy work and not fun.

That said I enjoyed the game and do not regret my purchase, it's a good game but not a great one. It's the kind of game where if there is a sequel to iron out the rough edges they could make something truly awesome. Especially if they hire someone to write better dialogue.

Guys, is there an easy way to view which eshop game deals are also being matched in price in Amazon/Target/etc.?

I've seen several cases of games matched in those sites, and the good thing is that when redeeming the code from them, you get the full price gold coins.
