Apparently the port of Mario Sunshine has switched the camera control to not be inverted, even though it was inverted in the GC release, and there's no menu option to swap it. That is seriously going to mess me up.
Terrible news. I literally control every non-fps game as if I'm moving a Lakitu stalker m64 style.

That is the best news.
There used to be a better diagram to explain this, but this should at least show the difference between inverted and not.

You are controlling the subjects VISION, down to look up is NORMAL thought process. you can learn to play backwards, but you have to adjust.

ALL fps games used to be inverted with no other option in the joystick age.. it was only since the D-Pad came to be that non-inverted was a thing.

I prefer inverted, I can play (not nearly as good) non inverted. It's the first setting I change in any game involving a camera, if it's not there... I generally never play the game again unless I have to. (play with friends etc)

Reviews saying the lack of analog triggers for FLUUD control really are a pain in the ass. That's a bummer.
That's been worrying me. Was hoping they would enable GC controller. Guess we'll get used to it.

I'm still super hyped to have Sunshine on a modern console. I'm also glad to hear pro controller works well for Galaxy, with Y button being able to replace flick for spin.

So, can we already play our digital copies of the game? I thought that they were locked until Friday since that's the "release date" even though the game downloaded a week ago.

I know they've released a bunch of GC style controllers for Switch (there's even a new Mario branded one next month), so maybe they're technically supported? The review I read from Kotaku mentioned they used Joycons and the Pro Controller for their playthrough, so not sure if they tested them.

I'd love one for Pikmin next month too.

i think the game maps R1 to "hold still and shoot water in 3rd person" and R2 to "squirt while moving"

so idk if any other type of controller will make a difference

The problem is loss of flow control based on how far you held down the analog trigger. Now it's full blast or nothing.

Man, if Nintendo only put as much effort into these releases as I put into my job, then...

*realizes I'm here on CAG while on the clock*

Man, Nintendo really did put as much effort into these releases as I do into my job!

Well, the Direct is in about three hours. We probably won't see anything as amazing as a young blond boy getting soaked in blood and then transforming into a giant bird monster. But, I have hope that Nintendo will deliver something better than a Bakugan game this time around.

Only about 20-ish minutes until the direct starts! Some people are speculating that we will not only be getting a version of Crash Bandicoot 4 for Switch, but that we will also be getting Crash for Smash.

Pretty expected the 3DS line of systems is done. Outside of that one version of the New2DSXL walmart had, it's been gone from stores for a while.

I'm not a Crash fan but hopefully something I am interested in will be revealed. Still, tempering my expectations since these things tend not to really wow me most of the time.

There's the Monster Hunter announcement.  Monster Hunter Rise.  March 26.

As someone who hasn't played the Monster Hunter series, what does it play like?  Am I best off finding a cheapish copy of an older game to see if it would be for me?

EDIT: Ori and the Will of the Wisps is really good if you haven't played it elsewhere.  I liked it better than the first by quite a bit.

It plays a lot like a modern Phantasy Star game. It also plays like games such as the God Eater series, and a game called Dragon's Dogma.

Japan's direct had a few extra games as usual, but they were just tiny indie games, not worth really freaking out or getting excited about. Harvest Moon must be huge in Japan though, as they used Rune Factory 5 as the closer to their show.

Story of Seasons games are surprisingly popular in NA as well. I believe the Back to Nature remake was their highest selling title in the series. It's a really good series of games.

Monster Hunter is basically it's own style of game at this point so it's hard to say if you'd like it without trying it. I know the older ones are often on sale, in fact I think the Switch one is on sale now. And it's best to try that as the 3DS ones all control a bit wonky.

Personally, I detest the series despite trying it several times now but a ton of people love it. It does have a social aspect to it as well that entices people if they participate in online play.

Anyone got any leads on discounted eshop cards? For the first time in a long time my balance ran dry and I'm having trouble finding anything decent. Dying to play the new Ori (tried booting it up on my laptop a while back but it nearly exploded I'm pretty sure)

Raise.com has 8% off $50 cards 6% off $20 cards and bigger discount with referral code if you're a new member. There's also Costco that offers 10% off $50 if you're a member.

Unfortunately Raise has never worked for me, and I have no Costco membership. Appreciate the suggestions, though!
Dang that's a bummer. Well if you have the GameStop pro membership I will usually use my $5 monthly coupon on a $10 eShop card so that's another decent way to get a discount.

Saw this on the CAG front page through the Twitter feed earlier today:

$35 gift card for $32 through Newegg with the code EMCDRGN37. Haven't tried it myself.

Monster Hunter is pretty much its own style of game, though it’s gotten popular enough that there have been enough games that have imitated its gameplay you could say it’s now a genre of its own. Other examples in this genre include God Eater, Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, and Freedom Wars.

Overall, Monster Hunter kinda bridges the gap between something like an action-focused Japanese MMO (like Phantasy Star Online), a technical action game like Dark Souls, and a loot-focused game like Diablo.

And despite the fact that all my examples are RPGs of some stripe or another, it’s worth noting that MonHun isn’t an RPG—your character does not improve or grow stronger (though you’ll craft stronger equipment over time).

There are a lot of non-action aspects, from crafting your equipment to running a farm to working on specific builds. I probably spend at least as much time doing all of that stuff as actual hunting in most MonHuns (though I may be a weirdo).

That said, Rise looks like it’s going to follow in World’s footsteps, streamlining a lot of the non-action elements to make the core gameplay more accessible, though even in World you can spend a lot of time on other aspects of the gameplay if you want.

I’d say that if you want to see if Monster Hunter Rise, or the core franchise in general, is up your alley, World is gonna be your best bet. It’s the most easily accessible version of the game so far, due to all the streamlining, though even with the Iceborne expansion, it’s a bit content-light compared to most games in the series (though that really isn’t saying much). The next most accessible entry is probably Generations/Generations Ultimate, though those are probably less representative of the series as a whole, since they add a lot of different gameplay mechanics that haven’t returned since.

Monster Hunter is a series that always sounds awesome and I’ve bought at some point just about every time since the PS2 launch ... and then I play it and I’m reminded how rough and grindy it is.

Love the visuals, love the monsters, but man did the gameplay loop feel rough with battles taking up to an hour. Having to constantly chase a monster with constant loading screens got old fast in earlier releases.

Monster Hunter World has gone a long way to modernize the series. It’s still not perfect but the controls are greatly enhanced and the visuals are impressive. Once again, I own the latest expansion but haven’t played it because I know the progression loop will be too much to get into.

I’ve come to accept that there is a group of games that I always buy but never fully enjoy. For me it’s probably Monstet Hunter, Pokémon, anything from Blizzard, maybe Witcher 3 and most JRPGs ... Almost always pick them up and then play them less than I should.

Monster Hunter Stories on 3DS is 19.99, and Generations Ultimate on Switch is 15.99 in case you want to try those out before the follow-ups.

Also, the Digital Foundry overview of Super Mario 3D All-Stars is up, in case you’re on the fence about it.

...I’m gonna end up buying this tomorrow entirely for Sunshine, aren’t I.

I know this is the Nintendo thread, and most of us treat mobile like a bad word, but if you can stomach the pitfalls of mobile gaming, I really do recommend getting MonHun Stories on iOS/Android over 3DS, the performance on 3DS is pretty poor, and the graphical style looks really clean with the anti-aliasing more powerful machines can afford it. And if you absolutely have to have buttons (even though MHS doesn't really have much in the way of action), it's compatible with PS4/XB1 controllers on iOS (I don't have experience with the Android version, so I can't say for sure).

crazy to think the mobile port would be better but how does it control? its turn based so assuming lack of responsiveness is not a big deal

To be entirely honest, I've only played the demo on 3DS to compare, but I'd say the controls on mobile are fine. Like you said, it's a turn-based RPG, so there's not a lot of need for precision controls or a whole mess of inputs, and it does fairly well even in the situations where you might want more precise control—running from monsters in the wider world works fine, as does running behind them to try to ambush them. The virtual analog stick is at least as good as any I've used on mobile, and I do a fair amount of gaming on my iPhone.

As for the performance, it's really not that surprising when you consider that the 3DS came out in 2012 and didn't exactly have top-of-the-line performance even then; MHS came out in 2016 and was a pretty taxing game for the system; and the mobile port came out in 2018.
