Got my Wii U today and first question I have is — is the system menu always this slow? It downloaded a system update so it should be on the latest firmware but, damn, going into settings for instance and back to the Wii U menu is painfully slow.

Guess I have to remember this is a last gen system but still ...
Yeah, definitely. As paranoid as it sounds, I felt like it got slower with later updates.

Or it's just the hardware aging. I prefer the conspiracy.

Perhaps Nintendo is pulling an Apple. Slow down the hardware to entice people to buy the new stuff — a Switch.

No it's insanely slow from day one sadly. Welcome to owning a Wii U, one of the least supported and least loved consoles ever made.

Yeah, last gen or not, it's way slow. The 3DS is a snail to, especially depending on what you may be doing at the time. I'm used to both, but now having used the NS, you can see where "N" finally realized what the word zippy means. LOL

Congrats on the Wii U, as it's a decent system for the right price. The library is kinda of sparse, but there is a good level of quality for a handful of games. Pretty decent digital indie library as well. Then if you ever want to take it to the next level, add CFW and really watch it shine.

I have to say, Nintendo has never really been about "performance" or speed.. Every gen of their consoles have their competitors run circles around them. But people still buy them. I had a Vita for a very long time before I picked up a 3DS. Turned it on the first time and started to laugh at how slow it was compared to my Vita.

Nintendo and Speed/Performance just never went hand in hand.

The Switch imo bucks this trend, I really don't see much sluggishness in the whole UI. And pretty much all games run fine.

Not true, as the GC was just fine, and the reason they stuck with carts on the N64 over CD's was due to better speeds. The Wii was just a repackaged GC, and since it had new features not originally intended for the hardware, I would say that is when things started to be an issue. That's also when they finally stepped in to online features.

They are also normally one gen behind specwise at this point. The 360 was pretty fast, but I would put the Wii U up against the PS3 any day of the week, as I don't even use my PS3 much anymore due to how slow it runs, and how long the updates take. While the Wii U is slow, it's a consistent slow. The PS3 almost seems to crash, as it's OS is complete crap.

"N" only stopped fighting the speed fight, when they saw it was a losing battle in regards to comparable hardware with the competition. Which like I said, stopped after the GC. Then they decided to just have the best gaming experience/innovations instead of beefed up hardware, as all that got them was maybe the second best version of a multiplatform release.

Of course handhelds are different matter, as along side smart phones, nothing they do was going to seem fast. But now by having a mobile style architecture, the NS is pretty damn fast.

I think that started with (or during) the n64 days.
Sony made the ps1 that had a slower CPU, but made up for it elsewhere.
I think that’s when Nintendo kinda gave up on keeping up with the competition. 100 million ps1’s... 30 million n64’s.
Nintendo has been playing catch up since. And I wasn’t exactly saying the UI, more of the games themselves. The Wii U’s and the 3ds were slow though.
The PS3 didn’t used to be slow, I think that’s more bloat that’s been added over time. Cause you are correct the PS3 is pretty sluggish now.

Remember, Nintendo was the king.. top of their game. Then Sega started getting better, and Sony came along after the failed Nintendo/Sony console.. and knocked Nintendo to last place. Then MS came along..
I just feel that when the PS1 dropped, Nintendo lost a lot of their desire to fight the competition and just did their own thing. Which is both good and bad.

Yeah, most of my issues are from the slow UI, and not so much the games. Bayonetta and Mario Kart are very fast running titles, and run just as well as any similar titles on the 360/PS3. I agree, the PS3 wasn't that slow from the start, but over the years with updates and what not, it got worse and worse, to the point I can barely use it. Which sucks, as I have a bunch of games I still haven't played.

During the GC era, "N" for sure realized their up hill battle to match Sony/MS step for step, and that led to new new thinking of the Wii. Which I also agree was good and bad, as they sold generation old hardware and made shit tons of money because of it. Which led to the Wii U, which wasn't very well thought out at all. I think they really wanted an NS type device at the time, but the tech and prices wasn't there yet.

I'm still shocked and amazed the NS has sold 10 million worldwide, as this first year of games is pretty lackluster for me personally. But I give them the nod of respect, as they for sure beat the odds and then some.

Is Star Fox Zero worth getting? I know it didn’t get great reviews mainly due to the controls but I’ve always had an interest.

I would say no, even if you can look passed the awful control scheme the game isn't very good. Might be worth a pick up at $10 to $20 just to see if it is up your alley.

If I get it it would likely be the “free” game in the current GS B2G1 deal. I’ll think about it.

"N" is currently offering a bundle on Ebay for $25 that also includes the Fox Amiibo. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Fox-Zero-Star-Fox-Guard-Fox-amiibo-Bundle-Wii-U/112644152523?hash=item1a3a1d5ccb:g:2pYAAOSwySVaPVio

So $10 per game, and $5 for the Amiibo I guess. I personally didn't find the controls that bad, of course they sucked when compared to the first two games, but I found them OK. The game was a like a poor reboot, that made corrections, where none where needed. The Guard game was much more well receive than Zero was, so that should tell you something. My son played Guard all the time, and played Zero maybe twice.

If you don't mind motion controls, and are a fan of the series, I say give it a try. But if you don't like motion controls, or if your not a big fan of SF, it's probably best to skip it.

I own it and keep it as a reminder to myself to be smarter.
OMG, one of the best comments I've ever seen around here.

I'm a HUGE Star Fox fan, and I thought I read early on how the game would allow for motion controls and standard if you would like. I don't know if that's how it started out, and got changed further in the development or not.

So up until release, I planned to get it to show support and hopefully not wait 20 more years for a decent follow up. Once the reviews started rolling in, and everyone talked of motion controls being the only option, I refused to buy it at that point. There where so many games on the Wii that where good, and could have been great if not for motion controls. If someone likes that option, great. But not giving proper choices is BS at the highest level.

I'm surprised the homebrew community hasn't hacked traditional controls in yet. They did for DKC Returns...

Got my Wii U today and first question I have is — is the system menu always this slow? It downloaded a system update so it should be on the latest firmware but, damn, going into settings for instance and back to the Wii U menu is painfully slow.

Guess I have to remember this is a last gen system but still ...
It is slow, BUT try using the "Quick Start Menu" option. I started using that and I can get to the game faster. The Wii U is a great system, simple because of all the great Wii/WiiU Virtual Console that might take a while to show up on Switch.

Does Affordable Space Adventures go on sale often? Saw it on a few top Wii U game lists and was curious but based on other games I want to play $19.99 is not “affordable” at this time. ;)

That game was offered once on Humble bundle. Check the trading section on CAG since I saw someone selling some of those Wii u keys for cheap.

I actually quit playing DKC Returns for that damn waggle shit, and didn't find out about the hack until years later. By then I had the 3DS version, and finally finished it, but I would have for sure loved to have finished it on the Wii if I would have known.

SFZ is completely intertwined with the tablet, and I don't think there is any easy way to fix the controls without a major overhaul. DKCR was taking the waggle, and assigning it to a button, one and done(which "N" should have had an option for to begin with). SFZ on the other hand has many features where the motion control works in tandem with the buttons all at the same time.

I would think a high level of reworking would be needed to make it work, maybe even from the ground up. I just don't see anyone bothering for a game that even with better controls would probably still be shit to most. Maybe if it was on a more popular system, but most hackers like to show off their work. And even if someone did the impossible, very few would ever get to try it due to the small user base and that it has been left for dead. LOL

Hey, drop me a PM as I still have my Humble Bundle code, and it's yours if you want it. It's a year and a half old, so I don't know if it's still active, but worth a try right?

I got those codes, and I would slowly give games to my son when he wanted something new to play. Over time, I forget about them, or some games I knew he wouldn't like, so I never used them. I added CFW to his Wii U awhile back, so these codes are pretty useless, and trying to sell them online is always more trouble than it's worth. Although I have been meaning to give the CAG code area a shot, as I'm sure I won't be dealing with as many issues here(I hope anyway). LOL

I love how you completely ignored the list I put out. I have BotW for the Wii U. I am waiting for a price drop on Odyssey. I don't really care for Steamworld.
I'm gonna say Mario and rabbids way over those other two, but you must be new to Nintendo if you think they EVER put their first party titles (especially their system sellers) on sale

I might be in the minority here, but I got the bundle for under $20 from best buy a while back and enjoyed it for the price I paid. I never finished it, but I had fun showing friends all the things to shoot and crash into lol.

I ended up getting it with the B2G1 thing at GS. I’ll give it a shot and if I absolutely hate it, maybe I’ll exchange it in the 7-day period but I did want to try it at least.

Edit: just played through the first mission and the controls aren’t great but, honestly, I had fun with it. Mostly was looking at the gamepad and maybe I just had set really low expectations. Still was more enjoyable than I feared after reading some of the comments here.

Personally, I liked SF: Zero, it's just that it took two playthroughs to master the second screen mechanic. By then I had a much easier time fighting the bosses and felt like I actually knew what I needed to do. One secret boss in particular took about a dozen tries the first time, afterward, I beat it quickly enough to get a medal.

That being said, I genuinely liked the Wii/ Wii U era Nintendo for being more experimental, so I never minded having to learn a new control scheme for a game.

The one game I know I still want is Super Mario Maker, but need to wait unless I can find it cheap on eBay. Searched the trading forum and nothing seemed to come up that wasn’t at least a year old.

So far have played BoTW, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros U, Star Fox Zero, Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8 and Affordable Space Adventures (thanks again chrislaustin!). Enjoyed what I’ve played of all of them. Still have Pikmin 3 to check out as well.

Your welcome!

I sold my son's Wii U collection a few months ago, and the prices where low for pretty much everything. The NS for sure killed what little fan/collector market was left for the Wii U. His Mario Maker no longer had the book, well we did, he just didn't want to part with it. And it sold for about $20 or so. Almost every decent title can be had for sub $20 and in new condition, or even new for that matter.

I have a couple of Wii U indie game codes I don't need. If you want them, you can have them. I believe for OlliOlli and BIT.TRIP Runner 2. Both very fun and addicting games. Feel free to PM me if you want them!

Don’t know. Mario Maker seems to be more going for $30+ (with many over $40) on eBay at the moment. Maybe getting more due to the holidays. I’ll keep an eye out.

Yeah, if those are complete with the book, I can see the increase. Like anything on Ebay, right place at the right time is key to good prices. I may have sold our games at a down time before the holiday rush as well.

But all our games where in new condition as well, so I could sell 10 games this week for $200, and next month the same 10 could go for $400, or $100. I've been selling probably close to 15 years now, and I wish I could say I had a rhythm to how pricing works, but I don't. LOL

Being new to the Nintendo digital ecosystem (aside from Virtual Console year’s ago on Wii), what day of the week do sales start on? Thursdays?

Oh, sorry. I buy stuff on there fairly often when there's good stuff on sale. Do you have questions about it?
It's ok, yeah I do have a question or two. I have mainly bought from the system itself when it deals with eshop games. How does the site have it setup to purchase games on there?
Is there a initial setup process separate from the system or something a bit simpler to logging in to my Nintendo account?

You should only need to login with your account info and it'll have all the purchasing info in there to just buy whatever you want pretty quickly.

I'm not exactly sure on that. I have seen in the past they have different release dates and sale times compared to the competitors. I check here and their site through out the week.

Question about Nintendo rewards. Does it take a while for purchases to show up? Bought a few things and redeemed a code, none of them are showing up as completed. And my accounts are linked.

Edit: Nevermind. I didn’t have to “redeem” them. They just were automatically applied to my coins.
