This online service is going to be great!

If Nintendo allows, I will probably go ahead and pre-pay for 5 years, since I have a feeling that price will eventually go up!

Also, it looks like this is the final word on Virtual Console:

https://gonintendo.com/stories/308543-nintendo-officially-says-there-are-no-plans-to-do-a-virtual-con

So this is even more great news because that confirms I will be keeping my Wii U plugged up!

And just a small FYI:

I'll pwn ANYBODY that I challenge online in this game: (This is a SMB3 2-P Battle Game BTW!)

I'll accept challenges anytime! :)

So apparently you can use the family plan even on different systems?
Time to split the membership 8 ways with people and make get a huge saving for the online membership.

So who am I splitting when it comes time for Nintendo Online?
Consider me a proud member of the Cheap Ass Family!! :p

If this comes out on or before September 16, I'll be so happy.  Would make my birthday oh so sweet.

The last time I remember something great coming out on my birthday was Maximum Carnage for the SNES (which I still own).

Was watching a few YouTube videos talking about this, nobody really knows the details yet.
Could be they must all have same account, which wouldn’t be good to share with someone halfway across the country.

So many questions that need to be answered, sucks we have to wait.

Well we'll know on family groups in a week. Not sure how you would link 8 of the same account together though and some of them could be children accounts?

HAHAHAHAHAHA $35 bucks a year?  What the hell service do they think they provide that is 1/3 as useful as Amazon Prime?  Do they ship the games to you once a month?  No?  Nintendo is so stupid.

... Again, that's the family plan. For one person it's 20, or a third of what their two main competitors charge.
But their competition provides about 3x the amount of service for their charges as well.

We're going to pay essentially $20 a year for what? Cloud storage (I get that basically for free on all my devices). Servers to play games? Nah. Honestly, Nintendo has ALWAYS been subpar on the networking realm (NNID accounts for example) but this is just the frosting on top. They provide a decent service I could see using them. But as is, they can't even plug headphones in without my cellphone.

I don't see the value. And I most certainly don't see the value as a father who will have to pay the extra $15/year on the off chance I wanna play a game online.

Frisky, you've been around a long time. Don't act like this isn't the height of silliness. To assume "I can't read". fuck that. That's a rude comment in general considering.

I'll sit and wait but once again proves to me that Nintendo's marketing is going further down the drain. Maybe they'll all be mobile clones soon enough.

If you don’t see the value that’s fine, you subscribe to a different level of value than others. Here’s mine: $20-34.99 for 1 year. I believe I can do $20 because I only use one Nintendo account for me and the kids, maybe not. Anyway, Off the bat I get 20 NES titles, most that I want and all with multiplayer for the first time ever. Very Cool to me. So let’s say each game has a value of $4, I have $80 of value there so roughly 2.5 years just membership without other features or added games later. I think all of these subscription models, plus, live, Nintendo provide a service that varies in value from one to the next. Plus as a certified adult I burn $20 on a meal that I poop out. So any prolonged yearly value here is a huge win for me.

People are comical. All this talk about paying for cloud saves. Hey geniuses. What do you think you are doing on PS4?  And with PS4 you get maybe one decent free game every other month and a crappy game for an old system and a portable nobody bought.

I will admit wholeheartedly that having to use mobile app for voice chat sucks for sure. But then again the price is one third of what Sony is charging.

My age is starting to show with my complete disinterest in voice chat. What's so great about voice chatting with greasy random strangers that only want to talk about how gay my mom is? Nintendo can drop the ball on that all day long, fuck that shit.

As stated over and over, PS4 cloud saves through PS+ is an ADDITIONAL avenue for backing up saves. You don't have to subscribe to their online service to backup your saves. With the Switch, it is the ONLY way to have game backups.

Additionally, on PS4 and XB1, you only need to buy one subscription and all the accounts on that console are covered under the service. If you have multiple accounts on the Switch, you'll be required to get the family plan if you want to cover more than one profile, making the price gap closer than "one third of what Sony is charging."

Sure, the PS3 is an old system, but plenty of people still haven't joined the current gen (as evident by how many PS4 and XB1 are sold each month this many years into the generation). And you're gonna fault Sony for still supporting/making games available for the Vita? Plenty of people own the Vita, myself included, but Sony paradoxically both abandoned the Vita and continue to make games available for "a portable nobody bought," according to people like you.

Anyway, for me personally: I dunno, it's kinda weird but despite owning a ton of games on each, I never really played my 3DS or Wii U online. The occasional MK7 race or Smash match, but other than that, nothing. I mainly buy Nintendo for the single-player experiences, so I guess I'll opt-out of this service because I don't play my Switch online. Cloud saves would be nice to have though, considering I bring my Switch around a lot and risk losing it/dropping it.

Didn't the original Xbox in 2001 have chat built in? In 2018 you have to use your phone to chat to people on the Switch?! I wonder if this changes anything in regards to games like Fortnite, COD etc possibly coming to the Switch or did Nintendo's online functionality just shut the door to those possibilities. Like someone else said above, I don't really chat with many people online anymore. However other people, especially people younger than me do. And that in turn means that the player base for games like COD and Fortnite will suffer because of it. Fortnite may be cross play across all platforms, but who knows.

It makes me think if the Switch has the hardware inside to allow for online chat capabilities. It is hard to believe it does because otherwise this is just pure laziness on their end.

People just gloss over the fact that you can backup PS4/Vita locally...... as well as cloud. Nintendo only will offer cloud.

If Nintendo allowed local backup, then they would be matching Sony.

And for people that DO NOT spend their day on video game live streams and news sites...... $35 is all that is seen. Hell the pic that has been posted a few times only says $35... you have to dig to see there is *also* a $20 plan. Easily missed.

And I’m with squeegor as well, I play Tera on pc from time to time, and installed it on PS4 to see how it is... Kumas battle automatically enters voice chat with zero option to mute etc.. the crap that is said there.... that had nothing to do with the pvp... uninstalled. One guy kept going on about f’ing his dog... while doing nothing in the battleground. No mute option... forced to hear his crap. Block him in the settings... still forced to hear him during the game...

I’ll voice chat in a game with very few people, all RL friends. Random people? No thank you.

And btw: I’ve watched two YouTube vids on the N online service, both 100000000x more informative than the stuff posted here in this thread, the only other place I’ve read about the service.. the vids pose questions about the wording of the service, that people here just assume it will be exactly how they interpret the service *will* be.
Honestly it’s too early to know how this will end up, there are a lot of questions that need to be addressed with the wording.

You can certainly criticize phone app requirements for voice chatting, but this is some old effin' news. They didn't just announce that or anything.

We had hoped it was a temporary thing that would be replaced with the online service.. requiring someone to have a 3rd party device (phone) for voice... they expect parents to buy a phone for their 8 year old so they can talk with their friends in game.
Where PS4/Xbox have it built in.

Minor issue for some, deal breaker for others.

Personally will not use the app myself. If it’s not built in, not using my phone attached to my switch.

Once the news on Nintendo online was posted. The family plan for $35 was new to me, it has been long talked about a $20 yearly plan. I think it is the way to go if you are a single user. We all know what Sony and Microsoft are charging. I don't think the $20 is that bad , but will reserve final judgment once all the info is released.

It was interesting that the vita saves could be backed up on a computer just like the 3ds could be, but I couldn't stand the proprietary storage options for the vita. Sony was really greedy on that and I might have kept my vita around longer if it had more support and the ability to use an SD card instead of their insanely expensive tiny card options.

Take it easy and learn to not get offended by some ribbing for such an angry rant about the wrong price for the service and compared the service to Amazon Prime for some reason.

Sony cripples the vita from the get go.. still a good system that still survives.. but I hear ya.

When I first saw the $35 I was instant hard pass. After finding out about the $20 plan.. I’m still leaning towards passing, but I still have a ton of questions I hope N answers before launch.

I compare things by how I use them for what they cost. In my case, $35 bucks... is eh. But you are right. PS+ and Gold are more expensive. But I also don't buy those at remotely full price. Always on their BF sales. And even then, only when greater than half off.

For example, Steam (free) is updating to allow me to play all my games on all my mobile devices. What does that do for me? Well it unhooks me from my desktop/laptop. How much is it gunna cost me? If it were Nintendo, I'd likely be paying $100 a year, per account, for the fun. But Steam charges... nada.

It's just an example. Just like the other things I cited. Frankly, I've let my PS+ elapse too they don't make it worth it to stay a paying member. The only thing I've found of remote value was Gold and even then, I just don't play shit online anymore enough to justify it other than being the center of my entertainment center. Now that Kinect/voice is on the outs I don't have any reason to stay invested in it.

I figured Nintendo, for the limited features, would be something more akin to Poke Bank... where it's only 10 bucks a year ish because seriously the features aren't that great. 20 rando indie titles, I could just do Indiegala if I wanted crap random games. I like Nintendo but this is a step backwards.

EDIT: What I really think this is... is me rebelling at all the nickel and diming these companies have gone to for things they have previously (and better) did for free to maintain my business. I feel the same way about all these online TV "hubs". I'm not buying the DC crap, I'm not spending on CBS. They either put it on the Cable I already pay (too much) for or at some point I'll google it if it interests me (which is likely won't).

You're writing a lot of words to somebody that's not trying to debate you about anything.

You can play all of your Switch games away from the TV for free.

I never unserstood the voice chat thing. Is it to keep "predatory" actions from happening or something? Wouldn't it make it more predatory for someone on mobile chat to ask for the kids actual number since you obviously know they have one? It just really seems backasswards.

I for one will be getting the service though. $20 a year is a drop in the bucket and I by no means am a wealthy man. I mean you get 48 games with Live and 32+ for PS+ (just PS4). I think it seems fair for 20+ games because you know there will eventually be rotation.

UGH I'm so tempted to buy a Wii U right now, but anything worthwhile on it is pretty much guaranteed to be ported to switch within the next couple years, right? I don't want to pay $150+ just for Splatoon :/

Did you just call Zelda indie?

Did you just call Mario indie!?

GET. OUT.

Personally, I think it's because the last two times Nintendo tried a chat service it got ruined by perverts, so the third time around they decided to put it on somebody else's device so that company gets to deal with the complaints instead.

I just posted this in the amiibo section and wanted to share with you all here too . For those who don't usually check out that thread and would like to hear something entertaining.

Thought you all might get a good laugh out of this . So I call a local Walmart and push the button for electronics. The person answers the phone and I ask if they have any Mario odyssey wedding amiibos. This is where it gets good

The worker asks me for what system, umm Nintendo I replied. The works asks what Nintendo do you want this for, so I mentioned the Nintendo switch.
I was put on hold and the worker comes back as says "no, we only have the regular Mario game" we don't have the wedding version.

So I just said thanks for checking and hung up the phone. LOL

I can't make this stuff up, and I was actually puzzled when I was asked for what system twice .
I was too confused and puzzled to laugh until the conversation was over.
C'mon Walmart , can you all get someone with any knowledge of recent and by that I mean within the last 6 months of games and accessories.

Yeah, this is pretty much what I thought as soon as that app was announced. When little Johnny or Sally hears something they shouldn't, "N" can pass the buck on to someone else, as it's not done specifically with the NS. While I think it is a HUGE cop out on their part, lets all be honest, it's not like there is many games past, present or future that voice chat is really needed for?

It's not like most of their games need voice chat anyways, and if I was going to use a multi-platform title, I would just buy it for PS4, and use a proper online service, if that was my desire.

Oh voice chat *is* a great tool for co-op games etc, but it easily gets abused. And by abused i mean REALLY abused.

I think voice chat should be there, but not joined by default. Either transmit or receive. Should be both off by default.

I don't buy the "cop out" though of pushing the voice chat to another device to blame it for foul language etc. *it's using N's APP* it does not matter if you are on a certain phone or not, they use N's App... Sure I can see some blaming the phone's app store for allowing the app to have curse words spoken through it..., but it's N's App...  Can't blame AT&T/Apple/Android/Verizon...

Yeah, I thought it used a 3rd party app, and not anything with "N" brand on it, so my bad. And with that being said, if parents give their kids 100% run of a smart phone, I doubt anything that can be said on the NS would be of issue. As kids in that situation can watch or do pretty much as they want(mature videos, explicit content songs, porn, etc).

But for those who actually parent, it's doubtful a kid is going to have full access to a smart device with out someone knowing, and I think that is where the kid "protection" comes in to play in this situation. Either way, I just see "N" not wanting to defend something included with the device, but having it thru a smart device, means parents don't care, or the ones that do, aren't giving an expensive phone to a child of innocents(at least in theory).

Don't most of the kids just use discord these days anyhow because in-game voice chat sucks most of the time? Is Nintendo's thing not just a discord ripoff or am I missing something? If it sucks, just use discord, or literally any of the many other options to contact your friends in 2018.

Also have you all even used the app, or this just your current fixation in the sky to yell at right now?

Large part of the problem.
What is "actually parent?" Is it an ever imposing threat? Giving a kid some slack? Parental controls? Not letting your kids play the same games all his friends are playing? That's super broad. Every household is different and one persons idea of "actually parent" can be wildly different than anothers and no less valid. Parent of an 11 year old here.

Not going to argue with you, there is no "one" way.

But so many parents have absolutely zero idea what their kids watch/listen to/play/etc... They let the game/tv/phone/etc be the babysitter.

"Not letting your kids play the same games all his friends are playing?"

Just devil's advocate here, if the game is "kill the neighbor's cat and upload the video to whatever site" And *all* your kids friends are "playing" it... it's fine right?

Or eating tide pods..... or snorting condoms... All fine right?

Like I said, so many parents just don't know what their kids are doing.

While snorting condoms sounds interesting, I doubt there’s enough psychoactivity worth the task...

Anyway, ...as I said on Nintendo life this is INCREDIBLY priced, best value out there, as usual, and at a third the cost of the only competition out there....I’m all in

wtf kinda game is that? This is a video gaming website right? Left field man. I would hope to assume that anybody with a kid who posts on this website is the least bit tech savy. This ain't facebook or reddit here.

I see where he’s coming from. My parents bought me GTA 3 when I was a young kid and they had no clue what that game was about. I told them all my friends had it so they bought it for me. Have they had known it had hookers, drugs, glamorized murder, stolen cars, killing of police and pedestrians, etc.....I don’t think they would’ve bought it. Personally I don’t think I’d let my kids play that now, which is why I consider Nintendo a more family oriented console. “Just to be clear I’m not trying to give parenting advice”

I personally look at parenting as the amount of work a person puts in, versus what they don't. The reason so many kids have access to things they shouldn't, is because most don't care and they just want someone else to be a parent for them. My son doesn't work, as he's 12, so unless he has a CC I don't know about, there isn't much he can or can't do without me knowing. Many countries have different ideals and laws in regards to sex, drugs and rock & roll, and people are no different. Legal ages for whatever, vary greatly around the globe, as they should, as we are all not the same.

As far as parenting and gaming goes, it's about knowing what a child is playing, and if it's appropriate for said child. As stated, most of us as children got many games we probably shouldn't have, as a lot of parents looked at gaming as what they saw growing up. At the start of gaming, there wasn't much content that needed to be supervised. That's where ESRB came in to play, as parents where letting kids buy games, thinking they where all Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.

I was raised by a single mom mostly, and she just didn't have the proper time to supervise me and my sister, as it was more important that we eat and had a place to live. So I understand the need for parental controls, as some parents due to no fault of their own, just don't have the time to be present as they might. When I say someone isn't parenting, it's because they have the time and just don't give a  fuck . This is the only issue where I would call someones parenting in to question, as others have stated, what's good for one, may not be good for all.

If a parent is cool with their kids having sex at 13, 14 or 15 that's all good, that is their choice. Just make sure your making that choice based on knowing ones own child, and not because they want to, or because their friends are, that's all "parenting" is, and that's being in the know.

Just hope you understand that what I mentioned... *ARE* current "games/challenges" done by kids.

When it was mentioned about actually parenting... it *does not* only apply to just video games. ALL aspects of parenting.

Has anyone actually done the stupid condom snorting thing since 2013? Sure, a few idiots did it at the time, but the recent "news" has all been videos from like 2013 that the media suddenly felt like pretending was a current thing when the Tide Pod "craze" died down.

Geez, I have the opposite problem with my 14 year old son.  He loves to play Mario, Zelda and Pokemon (especially) games.  Splatoon (1 & 2), Arms and Hyrule Warriors have been recent favorites.  I've been trying to get him to play games like Fortnight, Halo and maybe some sports games (as well as the Nintendo ones), because those are the ones his friends are playing and talking about but he really has no interest.  It would be nice if he did expand his horizons, but I recognize that it is a blessing he has no interest in the realistic violent type games.

As far as his online "freedoms", he talks to a friend out of state over Discord and plays some games with him on Steam, but we know the kid's parents so it's cool.  But, I told him up front, there is nothing happening where he should expect privacy under our roof.  We read his texts, have access to his email and get a weekly report on the sites he visits.  I also regularly check his history.  He is a very good kid, but also a bit naive on people in general.  I work in IT (including some security type stuff), and explained to him there is nothing he can do online I am not aware of, and if he does something he doesn't "get away with it", it is specifically because we allow it.  We're pretty lenient given he doesn't get in trouble and has great grades in advanced classes - so if he curses or something minor, we tend to let that slide.  Save your effort for the important battles.

Damn, your story is almost identical to mine, as we do just about the exact same in regards to online activities. My son doesn't have any friends yet who are online a lot, so that hasn't come up. As for other systems besides "N", he'll play on my 360 or PS3, but it's mostly for games like Banjo or games that are kid related. Since he's 12, I've been letting him play more teen rated games, but mostly ones I know won't be an issue. He had a few online situations where he didn't know I could see what he was up to, but since he found out the hard way, that's no longer an issue either. LOL

Glad to see a fellow parent being involved in what their child is up to, and actually making a solid effort to do so.

It helps to give them an example for how far reaching your view is on things from time to time. Slip into a conversation something they didn't know you knew about to keep them aware. Like "Hey I saw your friend is also going to the after school thing, are you going as well?". Make it something that won't bother them, just enough to feel your presence to keep them honest. You can't catch everything they do, the key is to be aware of as much as you can, and have them think that you see everything, or at least not be sure of what you do and don't know about. When they are used to it, it won't bother them nearly as much as it would if you suddenly one night make them give you all their devices to inspect.

Since I grew up unsupervised from pretty early on, I picked up and developed all kinds of tricks to get over on my parents. I probably got away with 90% of the stuff I would do, so I always tell my son to give up his life of crime, as he sucks at it. LOL

My son is very book smart, but not much common sense(but that may develop over time, but maybe not), and I'm the exact opposite. So when he tries these his amateur attempts at getting away with something, I see right thru it, as I've done way more complex schemes in my past. As they say, it takes a criminal, to catch one. LOL

Unfortunately there has been a bit of a resurgence.

Ooooooh.

So I was one of THOSE PEOPLE, and World was the first Monster Hunter that really clicked with me. How does this one compare?
It's not as pretty and it doesn't have all the quality of life changes that World made to bring more people into the game, but it might be more deep in some ways. it's a very good, very Monster Hunter-ass Monster Hunter game.
