Hour... it took me 3 evenings to get to the first island. OMG, how that game ever kept my attention previously I have no idea. The first two nights it LITERALLY put me to sleep.
It literally took me about two hours just to get into my first battle with monsters. Part of it was I usually take my damn time with RPGs, talking to NPCs multiple times and checking everything for hidden items. But still, even my patience was wearing thin. 5 hours in though, it's definitely a better experience for me. Not sure I'll put in the 100 hours like some people, but I'll see how far I can get.

Two hours?? I swear the original PlayStation version had a much longer intro. I remember really enjoying it. Didn't mind it this time either, though it felt SHORT... You guys have no stamina. We should appreciate when a game is about more than just killing stuff.

I quite like the slow build up in Dragon Warrior VII, at least in the PS1 version.  It was the only time the history of the series that a Slime appearing became a "Shit just got real" moment.

Downloaded Severed on Vita last week for $8. It's blowing my mind. What a unique experience. Great art direction, point and click dungeon crawler, unique and exciting "combat" system, and many secrets.
Second this. Just 100% completed, really unique experience, I highly recommend picking this up. Wii U version didn't seem to have any bugs or issues (mentioning this because Guacamelee had some at release).

So if we don't own a Wii U, do 3DS owners get screwed out of the $13.49 sale price? I can't buy it on the Nintendo digital downloads page, or my 3DS, so they give me no option to purchase it. They never miss an opportunity....

I do the same, compulsive, "this NPC may say something different since I found this item. The one conversation I miss will be for the best gear in the game." I hate that when Keifer joined me, they all did say something different. Now I have to talk to them every pass, since that confirmed that I'll miss stuff if I don't. I am 5 hours in & haven't fought anything yet. I'm in the area where the 4 statues represent 4 elements. I stand no chance of finishing this game. I am many hours into Bravely Default & FE: Awakening, and almost at the end of each, but I already own their sequels. Then, I go and buy an RPG that will take me 500 hours to complete just the story without sidequests. When will I learn?

So, I have a 30% off birthday "coupon" from Nintendo. It can only be used on one full priced item. To maximize the savings, I intend to buy the highest priced digital only game that has little to no chance of seeing any (or any significant) sales (and of course one I also want). My short list is:

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice

Picross 3D Round 2

Rhythm Heaven Megamix

I believe Ace Attorney will see sales eventually, so that one is out. The other two are Nintendo titles, so sales less likely.

Any opinions on the others from anyone that has them?

Any other suggestions? (BTW: No WiiU, 3DS only)

Also, is this new? I don't remember getting a coupon before. And if it is a thing, then I'll probably just buy the one I don't this time next year.

Depending on when your coupon expires, maybe Dragon Quest 8?

DQ8 is getting a physical release.. he said digital only releases.

...

As for the 30% off coupon... I don't know if 30% off of a full retail price game is enough for me unless it's something I'm completely hyped to own and play. I'd probably do something silly like pick a fairly low priced classic (nes or gbc) game that never goes on sale that I definitely want and consider it a small victory.

This Friday. And I would consider that, but looking for digital only since I have the possibility of getting a physical version at some sort of discount if digital never goes on sale. Thanks tho.

Normally I would agree, but the three two games I am currently considering I DO want to own and play, but will probably pass on at full price. Being Nintendo published, I doubt either will ever receive 30% off, at least anytime in the near or not-so-near future.

I've heard both are pretty good games. Make Picross heads... flip a coin and you should be good with either result. Or decide if you want a music game or a puzzle game more right this very minute. Like if they were already both on your system... which would you start first.

That's DQ7. DQ8 is being released early 2017.

Most of the really high-quality expensive digital-only titles end up getting physical releases later down the line (like Shovel Knight, Gunvolt, Shantae), so your options are limited. Most of the best digital-only titles with no chance of physical release are usually $10 or less.

Maybe Inazuma Eleven?

Currently I am playing the Zelda picross game and planned on playing the Pokemon one next. More likely would mix in Rhythm Heaven immediately.

That is another one to consider. I remember being interested when it launched. That's the kind of thing I was fishing for. Wasn't sure what else fit my criteria, but I knew there are probably not many that do.

I don't remember getting a 30% coupon last year, but if this is a thing now, I won't fret much and just buy the other ones next time if they don't receive a sale before then.

I also got a 30% off digital birthday coupon this month however it was only good on a few select games, most of which I already had so I just didn't use it. Are you saying your 30% coupon is off of any digital title and not limited to select titles?

Crap. Only saw the offer icon in the eShop. Just says 30% discount. Didn't go and see the details. Oh well. I was pleasantly surprised by them for once.

Yeah it it was 30% off whatever that would be great but the selection is crap at those prices.

Also are they pushing software to the Wii U now like the 3DS? What's this Lost Reavers Notice?

You should probably start on Pokemon Picross as soon as possible, since it's free to play and heavily limits the amount you can play without paying. Like, one or 2 puzzles, then go back to Zelda until you recharge.

Yeah, it sucks. I won't be using it. But, ya know, it is still better than a paper cake or $0.25, which is actually worse than nothing,

I have a 30% off a digital game purchase for my birthday, but will I be able to apply that discount to one of these games that are on sale?

Pokemon Picross is not a good Picross game if just because the majority of the puzzles are faces. Not enough variety and it costs too much to get rid of the mobile BS. Just get the Picross e games or Picross 3D Round 2 for some great Picross action.

Or Mario's Picross on the Game Boy VC. Only $4!

Pokemon Picross was my first Picross game, but then I went straight to Mario's Picross. It was a pretty different experience:

Pokemon Picross:
Hi, I'm Professor Whocares, this is the land of blah blah blah...
Here are the basic rules of picross.
Here are some tips that are pretty useful if you're new to picross.
Here are some strategies that you're probably too dumb to figure out.
Here's a deceiving amount of in-game currency to try to snag you!
Let's practice buying new stages together!
Here's how Pokemon abilities work.
Let's practice buying new Pokemon slots!
Watch out for your energy meter! You can refill it by blah blah blah...
A legendary Pokemon! Better catch it within the time limit or it's GONE FOREVER
Don't forget to do your garbage daily puzzles to grind trivial amounts of currency!
Here are the other game modes that you'll never be able to afford without a credit card.
You've used up all your freebies, good luck!

Mario's Picross:
Here are the basic rules of picross.
Here's a s***-ton of puzzles. Go do them.

I miss the simpler days.

I remember playing Mario Picross on the Game Boy with no knowledge whatsoever of the game, it hooked me right until the end, and it had a LOT of puzzles. It's still number one I fell, though the Picross DS game came close.

As for Picross 3D 2 I'm playing it and it's great if you enjoyed the original DS game. I highly recommend it.

I may have to spend money specifically on a theme for the first time ever. >_>

What games was it offering it on?
:wiiu:

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U Bundle
Splatoon
Super Mario Maker
Xenoblade Chronicles X

:3ds:
Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam
Mario Kart 7
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon
Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition
Super Smash Bros.

only applies to these ^

Yeah, I haven't heard great things about Pokemon Picross. I'll give it a shot after I finish Zelda Picross. I'll move on from it if its that bad.

My plan was to play the free ones first, giving a chance for the e games or 3D 2 to have a sale. I'll buy the e games one by one even without a sale when I need more picross.

I really do want 3D 2 which is where my mind immediately jumped when I saw the 30% discount coupon. I think it has a *better* chance than the e games of seeing a sale eventually, being higher profile and higher price, so i'll wait a bit on that one.

I just found out today about Chase: Cold Case Investigations, which is essentially a new Hotel Dusk. And it's out in two weeks! This is the GOLDEN AGE of eShop releases!

Pokemon Picross isn't that bad by itself, but it is VERY grind-heavy and unlike Shuffle and Rumble World, it's hard to grind Picrites. You can get 5-6 Picrites for completing missions in each level, and there's a Daily Challenge that gives you 10-15 Picrites a day depending how you do. By the time you get to the higher levels, it takes over 200 Picrites to open a new level, so it will take at least a week to open a new level without spending any money. You also have to spend Picrites to expand your Pokemon slots (you start with 2, expandable to 5) and your actual energy is limited unless you eventually upgrade to unlimited.

Like Rumble World, though, there's a limit. You can only spend $30 max on the game.

There are people who have been waiting years for the Picross e games to go on sale and nothing has happened yet, so you can either buy them at their currently great prices or you'll never buy them if you only want them on sale.

Yeah, I think I'll take JCAll's advice and play it sporadically in between other picross games, see how that works out. If I need to spend cash, I'll buy the Picross e games instead.

Oh, I agree. I believe there is ~0.0001% chance the e games will ever go on sale. I think I said as much but I will buy them at full price if necessary (they aren't expensive at all for what they offer), albeit one at a time as I complete them. 3D 2 is a different beast. I'll most likely eventually cave but who knows, maybe next year that will be part of the 30% discount offer.

What!?!?!?!?!

This just made my day... maybe my year! Wow. First Shenmue 3, now a new game by the peeps that made Hotel Dusk & The Last Window.

Agreed, except I'm not so psyched about Shenmue 3. I liked the first two, but the Yakuza games are the modern equivalent, and much better.

Remember having to import Last Window, because they refused to release it in the US despite it already being localized (apart from some UK terms like "to hospital")? Good times.

Shenmue is my favorite game ever... Hotel Dusk though is easily in my top 10... which says a lot since i started gaming with generic pong back in the late 70's. Yakuza is a great alternative to Shenmue... though I don't feel like that series has anywhere near as much heart. Still, it's a fantastic series and I've owned every NA released game in the series thus far. I love games where you get to freely walk around, explore at your own pace.. but have a really strong story.

I hated that they didn't bother bringing Last Window here... I ended up getting mine through an Amazon reseller and opted for the Italian version since it's the same as the UK version other than the text on the cover art. That saved me quite a bit of money over the UK cover art version.

I love the Rhythm Heaven series, and Megamix is a worthy entry.

It's currently the only way to play a bunch of the games from the Japanese original in English, and it's got some of the best ones from the DS and Wii entries (as well as a bunch of new ones), and there's even an absolutely brutal endgame with up-tempo challenges. They're easily the hardest stuff in the entire series, if you're into that kind of thing. Plus there's local co-op, plus a minigame where you feed turnips to a goat using a pachinko machine, plus various other gleeful weirdness.

It's pure joy.
