Let's be honest, 720 HD is like watching old analog TV anymore.  It's unacceptable in a world with 4K.

Now while I understand not everyone uses it, you are selling a NEW console for $300.  The least you could do is give me good graphics.

And while some games do run at 900ish resolution, I give them just as much crap.  In this case, you're talking about a LAUNCH GAME that they DELAYED for the launch.  Why can't you squeeze the necessary resolution from it?

If MK8 can do it, and maintain FPS, then awesome.  We'll have to see.  Have they given the handheld screen resolution info yet?

Eh. FFXV, Quantum Break, Doom... all run at below 1080p on Xbox One and I don't give a shit, they're all beautiful games, and when they're in motion and you're having fun with them, you don't care. If I owned a 65inch HDTV, I might care, but I don't. I still play plenty of PS3/360 games which run at 720p and I think they look fine, too.

Comparing 720p to analog TV is ridiculous, and using 4k as a reference is absurd since most people can't afford 4k televisions and don't own them. In 5 years, maybe, but right now it's the highest luxury within an already expensive hobby - and a superfluous one, at that, since a lot of people don't seem to care about 4k. I care way more about having a steady framerate and games being optimized to play well.

I just got done playing castleva6 cotm on the GBA. Graphics sucked but I had a ton of fun.
I don't care if it's only 720ppp or whatever, I am looking forward to it and you 4k elitists can all stay away and be quiet while playing whatever high graphics adventure you want.
Bring on zelda and Mario for me

I don't think it'll be a fad like 3D, since it doesn't require anything special, like glasses. But people will continue to still use DVDs anyways, because it's cheaper and most people don't care.

Everyone of my Friends who games with the PS4/ONE, all have 4K TV's, and if I ever happen to go and buy a new, I'll do the same.

It will be the new standard at some point, but my HD TV is fine, and I don't have a grand to buy a new TV when my old one is working fine. Everywhere I go that still has B&M like Best Buy, has 4K in the for front of every store.

But to fully use 4K, it requires several upgrades across many different devices, so I don't see it happening super quick, like regular HD did, but it will happen.

Holy crap turn your PC settings down if your game is running at 900 frames per second. That's well above and beyond what a human eye can distinguish.
Not what I meant. I meant 900 resolution. But thanks.

and a superfluous one, at that, since a lot of people don't seem to care about 4k. I care way more about having a steady framerate and games being optimized to play well.
Maybe, but enough people want it and use it that it warranted a hardware refresh from the other 2 major platform developers. But hey, what do I know.

And for the record, most people I know have 4K TVs. Most have upgraded to either the XBOS or Pro. If you don't have that, I'm sorry. Get a better paying job. Gaming is an expensive hobby and those of us early adopters (the one's that BUY things like the 3DS Phat, the WiiU, VR) are the ones that eventually get it made available to everyone else for cheaper.

Heck, 4Ks for B. Friday deals were super ridiculously cheap. My gripe is that the game isn't making full use of the system (by design) OR the Switch can't handle a game being full use (which, if MK8 runs 1080 then it SHOULD be able to). Either way, it wasn't posted here so I just brought it up.

I was going to buy it based on your description, but it is only available on the New 3DS. Bummer.
Well, that does suck. Since it only uses the circle pad and the "a" button for controls, it must need the extra processing power for when the screen becomes awash with enemies. To maybe make you feel a little better, I'll give you the cons - it might not have a ton of content (I only see 4 worlds for arcade mode) and the leader boards are local only.

Just like HDTVs becoming more standard, the tech will get cheaper as more devices support it and there's a bigger demand. In 5 or 10 years? Probably. But the leap from SD to 1080p was like VHS to DVD - a drastic one, and the original 360 didn't even ship with an HDMI port. I feel like HD has just recently become standard, so pushing a new, higher resolution feels premature, and the difference between 1080p and 4k on anything smaller than a 40-50" TV is hard to appreciate. CheapyD reiterates this point regularly.

I don't think the Pro/Scorpio is based on consumer demand, they're creating supply to create demand. The most common thing I hear about Pro/Scorpio is concern over splintering the install base and making upgrades only 3 years into a platform generation. Just like PS3 pushing Bluray, no one gave a shit about $40 HD movies and a lot of people didn't have TVs to take advantage of it back in 2006. I don't see 4k taking off the same way because the difference is less significant.

Also, get a better job? Seriously? Do you realize which website you're on? "I can't afford it" and "I'm not willing to pay that much and don't care" are two different things. To that point, BF 4k TVs were in the $400-500 range at their lowest. Maybe that's a good value for what they normally sell for, but a $500 television isn't "cheap", value or not.

I honestly can't tell if you're serious about all of this or if you're just trying to get people riled up.

I don't believe you.
Same.

Any idea if Picross 3D part 2 will ever go on sale?

I never really buy stuff from the eShop so I have no clue. Don't really wanna pay $30 for it, but I played the hell out of the first one and the demo was pretty fun.

None of the other Picross games have gone on sale over the last few years, so it seems unlikely. Out of all of them, it's still the most likely to go on sale due to the retail connection compared to the rest of them.

The game itself has a ton of puzzles in it and was well worth the money for me.

Probably, but not for a while and likely not more than 30% off. Nintendo usually discounts their games during holidays and other events.

There's a lot of content, so it's definitely worth the $30. I imported it back in December and still haven't finished it.

I bought it full price last week and have gotten my money's worth. It's great.

Almost everyone I know has a 4k TV according to my last electronics census.  I constantly have to "forget" about people though, which is killing my social life.

Pocket Jockey Demo is fun but the writers went a bit overkill with the sheer amount of unskippable dialogue.  Is this something that will plague the full version as well?

Thanks guys. I think I'll get it at $30 then.

The demo was great. It's gonna take some time for me to adjust to the dual colors. Really changes the way I'm used to solving the puzzles. I'm breaking blocks that I shouldn't lol.

720p is amazing for a handheld

People need to realize that the switch is a handheld system that you can play on your TV, not a console that you take on the go

Well, "N" is saying it's a console you can take on the go, so I personally don't know how portable it is, but I guess that depends on one's point of view.

Nintendo themselves is marketing it as a console that you can take with you, plus most games shown for it are going to be more playable on a TV.

It's way too big to be a handheld. It's roughly the same size as the Wii U Gamepad.
In terms of width, you're correct, with controllers attached anyway. Otherwise the screen itself is about the same length and width as the 3DS XL. having to disassemble it or keep it in a case though in addition to its slightly bigger form factor means I probably wouldn't be carrying it around the way I do my 3DS as often.

You know the 360 is considered a portable console as well:

On the topic of eshop, are there any deals on eshop cards anywhere?
Not from the usual culprits (BB, Amazon, Walmart, Target). But you only generally get 10-15% off so unless you're going big, the savings might not justify the wait.

BB's was a day sale on 1/13 for 10% but that's already passed.

The eShop updates at Noon EST. The big day for Nintendo is Thursday, but other sales can happen on other days, like the common Atlus sales on Mondays.

Thursday is the big update day, but sales can show up any day of the week.
Thank you both.

I now have another question. Is there a general rule of thumb for what games/types of games go on sale, and what don't? I am trying to figure out what games I should wait for sales and which ones I shouldn't hold my breath for.

Anything from Atlus, Capcom (specifically Monster Hunter, but Phoenix Wright and Resident Evil also apply to a lesser extent), or under $5 not VC, you can probably wait. Anything Nintendo-made, don't bother unless it's close to the holidays or you feel like relying on My Nintendo.

Nintendo's Fire Emblem Direct just ended with four FE games announced and/or shown:

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is an eShop exclusive for the 3DS that will be out on 5/19 with two Amiibos featuring the two main characters on the same day. This is a remake of the second game, which offers free roaming dungeon crawling in addition to the trademark startegy RPG battles.

Fire Emblem Warriors was shown again with some actual gameplay, which looks as you expect from the same team as Hyrule Warriors. It's also coming to New 3DS, so they're at least not fooling regular 3DS people into thinking they can play a suitable version.

There is another Fire Emblem game coming to Switch in 2018 that is a traditional Fire Emblem game.

Fire Emblem Heroes is the mobile game that is out 2/2 on Android and iOS is at a later date. It's still a SRPG on a 8x6 grid to better fit phones/tablets and the same sort of classic 2D art style you expect. Your party is made up of classic heroes from the previous games along with new heroes. They're doing a vote for the featued male and female hero that get special "Choose Your Legends" outfits in the game. My Nintendo members get 200 platinum points for voting. Early registration begins on 1/19 for Android people. If you want to see the game in action with some more details explained, the last ten minutes is just about FE Heroes.

Does it usually take awhile for these 200 coins to show up in your account? I voted a few hours ago and the coins aren't in my account. Anyone else having this issue?

Special outfits you say? As an Awkward Zombie fan, I know what I must do.

Amazon has Echoes for preorder with the 20% Prime discount. No sign of the amiibo yet.
Also if you go to the link Frisky posted for the game... Nintendo has a link to buy a physical copy and shows a group of stores it'll be available at. Amazon, Gamestop, Bestbuy, Target, Walmart, & ToysRUs. I did the Amazon option as I have prime.

Hopefully the Amiibo aren't a serious component of the game but some small extra to get those specific characters in your party sooner or something.
