Nintendo is brilliant. The Wii as a side dish.

Wii... or is it:

-PSWii
-Wii60

Wii rhymes with "3", which both the Xbox 360 and PS3 contains.

It's obvious Nintendo isn't simply hoping for people to buy the Wii exclusively. They even said it themselves that they're not completing directly this generation. In addition to that, with the Wii's low price of $250 USD, a fair bunch of people will no doubt be getting a Wii plus either a PS3 or 360, or all three.

The Wii isn't really being marketed to be an exclusive system, it's being marketed as a side dish.

With this strategy, Nintendo can reach an incredible install base for the Wii.

I've realized this for awhile now, but I'm not sure if most people also do as well. I'm personally aiming for a PS3 at launch, but plan to acquire a Wii sometime down the road as well.

Nah PS3 all the way with the Tilt in the PS3 and the New EyeToy why bother with this modified game cube?

i dont think many people will even know what this wii thing is, it sure sounds really pathetic and kiddie you know!
Ah, richbastard.... the Game Informer target audience.
And also the reason the ignore list exists.

I don't know if the price can really target these so called non-gamers or the mainstream gaming audience in general. The Gamecube as well as every system prior to now was $200, and that didnt help.

If the experience is there as advertised, then that is what draws the crowd. The price is a secondary concern.

But $250 became cheap around time the premium 360 launched last year.

lol, I can see their next line of ads.

Had your fill of next gen? Try Wii - the other console.

I do think the Wii might become that secondary console once it goes down in price, but right now? eh, don't think so. Skeptical about how much more successful it'll be than the GC.

I'm going to laugh when you fail out of college, lose your job and change your name to poorbastard.

Wait.... the PS3 has a new Eyetoy!?!?!? AND TILT!?!?!? I'm sold! Sold I tell you! SOLD!

Nintendo is NOT hoping you buy the Wii as a 'second system' to go with your PS3 or Xbox2. Reggie was asked about this, and to comment on Peter Moores comments that 360 owners should also buy a Wii and forget about Sony. Reggie said that he hopes everyone buys a Wii, and then goes out and buys a DSLite.

The Wii60/PSWii concepts came out of their respective camps (i.e., Microsoft and Sony). Primarily when they both realized their systems are very similar in terms of ability, and not far and away that much different when it comes to price. They recognize that the Wii has great potential at the moment, so they are aiming to sabotage each other by promoting their graphics + Nintendo's innovation, thereby encompassing the entirety of this generation's spectrum.

Nintendo likes the idea to a degree, and in the past has mentioned that "We don't mind if we are seen as a secondary system as a compliment." I think Iwata said that.

Reggie of course suggested that you might as well get a DS (as Puffa shows). Which is an obvious statement for a few reasons beyond simple business - it can be used as a controller, there will be downloads via the Wii, etc.

If Nintendo were able to be an exclusive system to X percentage and secondary to non-X percentage, there's a chance it could be the "number 1" console, depending on how you look at it.

Personally I think most people only want one of the big guns at the moment. Depending on how launch goes and if advertising kicks in, we'll see how well all of this holds up.

I'll get a PS3 before a Wii, if history repeats its self.

Nintendo's consoles gain a lot of steam before launch, then they suck for about a year before they get enough decent games to warrant a purchase. On top of that, the Cube and the N64 both died while the PS1 and PS2 still had years ahead of them. Hopefully, the Wii will break the pattern.

I believe this news.

It's almost like you read my mind ;)

I think you're right but I am definitely not one of those people. When I see "next-gen," all I see is a marketing push for people to purchase HDTVs and "next-gen" DVDs. I see companies charging microtransactions for incomplete games, cheat codes, and content that used to be free. I see very few games that appeal to me - and surely none with a pull strong enough to make me want to buy a console just to play them.

I am going to buy the Wii at launch, and if it turns out to be an utter failure, I'm sticking with my DS for the remainder. I have played more DS in the past year than my PS2 and GC combined.

The alternatives weren't $400-$600 then, though, either.

Within the first year we'll be getting Super Paper Mario, Super Mario Galaxy, Wario Ware, Battalion Wars 2, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Mario Strikers Charged, and I'm sure there are a few major 2007 Wii games that have yet to be announced.

Yeah you missed at least one. Disaster which at this point had a slick e3 trailer but thats about it.. either way its a new Nintendo property and normally that does something (excuse geist).

you're under the impression that I care about all those games and that they're all guaranteed for 2007, which they aren't. ;)

I'm interested in definitely buying 3 of those games, and then Wario Ware after a price drop. Possibly Super Mario Galaxy.

Shut up. No one cares about your ignore list, fag.

 :applause:

I always cringe at the "you've made it to my ignore list" posts

You lost me when you said 'low price of $250.' If they were truly going for a side system for 'hard core' gamers and a first system for non-gamers they would have gone really aggresive with their pricing. Just my opinion.

I don't even care about all of those games, I was just showing that Nintendo has a pretty diverse lineup of first party games coming out next year and that they should have something for almost everyone. ;)
I'm going to laugh when you fail out of college, lose your job and change your name to poorbastard.
we'll even throw a party :D

In the last (current) generation gamecube had a huge disadvantage coming qout late. The PS2 had a good game selection by then and it had reverse combatibility on it's side. This time the Wii is coming out with a good launch selection, where as the PS3 is lacking in any really good launch games. The Wii also has a good chunk of media hype what with the Toys'R'Us top toy list. The Wii is also benefitting from increased 3rd party support. So although I'm sure the PS3 will do great in the long run, with it's $600 price tag and sparse launch, I think the wii will certainly fair better then the GC.

You are such a cunt.

Personally, I would only have a Wii this generation, at least this early in the game except I got a $1000 check of unexpected fun money so I decided to check out the 360. Glad I did too. But I had no intentions to buy a PS3xp3nsiv3 or a 360. I probably will end up with all three though, when the PS3 is a whole hell of a lot cheaper and I have a HDTV.

Gee, the hostility is brewing,

Maybe it's just me, but for a person who wants to game for 10 hours or so a week, I don't think you could keep playing with just a Wii. But, this is classic Nintendo, you wouldn't have been able to do this with an N64 or a Gamecube either?

Nintendo has always been a company that has 2-3 great games a year come to their system, but long lulls in between good games. I want the system for those great games, but it's always been a secondary system.

Nintendo isn't interested in an "alliance" with MS either. I thought MS was brilliant to point out you could buy a Wii and a 360, but Nintendo quickly shrugged that away, saying just buy our stuff. But, Nintendo doesn't really care about being number 1. They care about profits, and that's fine. They push their connectivity, their handhelds, and some decent games. I'm not a huge fan of all their practices, but it works for them.
