February 9, 2010 - That's right, Nintendo fans -- it's time to start up those hype engines. We think there's good reason to rev 'em up, too.

Last month, the Official Nintendo Magazine teased a big reveal for its next issue. Typically, details were scarce, but the publication promised it had "something very special lined up" and that readers should keep their collective eyes peeled for the March 12 release date.

Now, Nintendo of America has officially invited select members of the press to its Q1 Media Summit event, set to kick off February 24 in San Francisco. "Please join us for a full day of presentations, demos and hands-on gameplay," the invite reads.

For your consideration, some big Nintendo games on the horizon include Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M, and the next Legend of Zelda offering. We'd be surprised if the Big N spoiled the Zelda surprise before the Electronic Entertainment Expo, but we would not be at all shocked if Mario or Samus made an appearance at the event, particularly given both titles are more likely to be released this year than Link's next. Also, Nintendo recently updated the official Metroid website with a new focus on Other M.

We're just saying.

Start 'em up.

And rest assured IGN will be on-hand at the event with full coverage.
What are you guys expecting?

The rumor is new hardware...so I hope they aren't referring to the DSi XL (or whatevs), because technically, it would be new hardware for NA.

Announce at least one of these sequels and I'll be happy:

F-Zero
Pikmin
Waverace
Kid Icarus
Starfox
Luigi's Mansion
Donkey Kong

I wouldn't really say Luigi's Mansion, but I think that game could be amazing with a Wii update.

I hope Nintendo is actually going to announce a new Console, not a new variation of one of the current one's.

There better be DQ6, DQ9, and DQ10 news. With some Zelda news will make it perfect. DQ and Zelda: reason why I have the Wii.

My guesses (like you care) for stateside releases
DQIX - Holiday 2010
DQVI - Spring 2011
DQX - Never. Thanks again, DQV.
It's probably just the DSi XL.
Realistic: It is almost certainly the DSi XL. Other possibilities include a black Wii, release date window for Galaxy and perhaps some chatter about already announced third party titles.

Wishlist: New Play Control! Pikmin 2 and Chibi-Robo come stateside.
Way too soon to announce a new console imo.
Forget about that idea.
I agree...with the Wii still selling fairly well, there is no need to rush out the next console.
They'll at least play a short teaser video of Zelda.
Doubtful. They will wait for E3. It is a highly televised event.

you call some crappy youtube videos shot offscreen on cellphones "highly televised"?

G4, and news outlets go to E3...

I have seen things in the newspapers about E3, and such. It is a much more known even.

G4 isnt exactly "highly televised" and you may see a passing news blurb if a new console is launched. Not many people past us geeks care about the video-game portion of E3 (more people go there to meet pornstars)

I would love to see a new Eternal Darkness game.

I really hope that Nintendo re-registering Luigi's Mansion and Eternal Darkness trademarks leads to sequels.
Nintendo re-registered the name Eternal Darkness on the 10th .... probably just keeping up on the name, but you never know. I missed out on the game, hopefully they are doing something with it now.
Who knows at this point what Silicon Knights is up to. Dyack said he would love to do a sequel but was too entrenched in his Too Human 'Trilogy.' Of course that was before Too Human tanked, so maybe they've been hard at work on ED for the past 18 months.

Personally, as much as I loved the first (probably one of my top 5 games of last gen), I'd rather wait to see a sequel until there is a WiiHD. That is one game/franchise that just screams HD.

Lots of rumors floating about concerning the DS's successor...

I can't wait for this event if only to put those rumors to rest. Wouldn't a new system kill the huge momentum the DS has right now and compromise the XL's sales? Unless Nintendo doesn't really care about it like the Micro.

I do hope we get some info on Gen 5 of Pokemon.

I expect to see the XL, some Japanese announcements of games being released in North America, and some quick Vitality Sensor talk. That's good enough for Philly!

I guess Australia had a me-too summit just now, and it said that Metroid and Mario Galaxy 2 are confirmed as summer releases?

Yeah this leaves open Zelda as a holiday release, but when was the last time a console Zelda game was shown and came out when it was supposed to? Please note I said console Zelda, as the DS titles generally seem to release when projected.

I'm not thrilled with the notion of tomorrow. Or, rather, my interest has declined over the past few days. We'll see how it goes.

I think Zelda might show, if not Pikmin 3 or possibly a secret title. Wiiware will be shown. WM+ might appear here and there. XL will be given details, if not a flat-out release date. Everything else won't appear until E3.

Nothing much at the Australian conference, except for announcing the release of the Black Wii, DSi XL, and a "between June and August" release window for Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M. It sounds like there will be more info, videos, and/or press demos revealed at the US press event. I believe I read somewhere that the timeframe for tomorrow is: Conference at 9AM PST and the embargo lifts at 9PM PST.

As others have said, G4 is basic cable most places now. In addition, the launch of Mario 64 and the Wii at E3 both garnered national news coverage on nightly news shows and in magazines such as Time. So, yeah, people do pay attention to it. "Highly televised" might have been a poor choice of words, but E3 isn't exactly invisible outside of the blog and message board community.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M will have a lot of details- and Zelda will not even be mentioned. Watch.
If Austrailia is a hint at what's to come- I called it!!

We are going to receive Sin & Punishment 2 + Endless Ocean 2 + WarioWare D.I.Y DS/WiiWare until the summer.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 & Metroid Other M are potentially summer. I think the vitality sensor will be around this time as well.

I want to say that for the Fall/Holiday- Zelda won't be enough (which is the game I do expect at holiday 2010). Expect another heavy hitter. My guess is one of two things. Pikmin 3, or that Kirby game that has been floating around lists for a while.

Does the black Wii have the same specs as the white Wii? If so, then Nintendo really missed a golden opportunity to make some incremental improvements (e.g., more internal memory) and get a boost in sales as some die hard people upgrade.

Sounds like Galaxy 2 might even be a first half of 2010 release. I am really excited just checking out the live blog lol.

More release dates

Sin & Punishment 2: June 7
Picross 3D: May 3
WarioWare DIY: March 28 *DS retail + Wiiware companion*
Mega Man 10: March 21 (guess it was delayed, plus releasing on a sunday!?)
Max and Magic Marker: March 8 Wiiware
Cave Story: March 22
